Iran and North KoreaThe dissimilarity between Iran and North Korea is quite significant, though Iran has had more publicity; North Korea is considered more of a threat to the US. Both of these countries have started nuclear proliferation, disobeyed U.N. regulations, and have responded differently to sanctions by the U.N. The U.S. has long feared that Iran and North Korea have been growing their stockpile of nuclear weapons or, at least, enriching the uranium so they can either make weapons of mass destruction, or for in the use of nuclear energy. Recently, North Korea has been in the news for the underground testing of nuclear warheads. It was said that the shockwave it produced could be felt in Japan, even though it was only 2% of the force used in Hiroshima. According to the Sunday, June 18, 2006; Page A14 of the Washington Post, “Satellite images indicate North Korea appears to be getting ready for a second nuclear test, officials said Tuesday, as the defiant communist regime held huge rallies and proclaimed that U.N. sanctions amount to a declaration of war.” Unlike North Korea, Iran is suspected to have only used their nuclear production for energy purposes. Nevertheless, the United States has been keeping the guard up by demanding that all testing stop. Iran has come to the table and looks as if they might stop their nuclear production, but N. Korea says that they are going to keep on creating nuclear weapons in spite of the threat of blockade and sanctions. N. Korea’s leader says that they’re creating nukes because the United States is a threat. “The West suspects Iran is seeking nuclear weapons but Tehran insists it only aims to generate electricity,” according to the October 17, 2006 New York Times article titled European Union Backs Limited Nuclear Sanctions Against Iran. Iran’s leader, Ahmadinejad, seems to stand firm in his belief that Iran has the right to enrich uranium, which later could be used for weapons of mass destruction. North Korea leader, “Pyongyang, openly affirmed its nuclear weapons intentions, Tehran insisting its program was peaceful.” Other newspapers say that Germany agreed to discuss sanctions against Tehran after it failed to suspend uranium enrichment operations. If such sanctions are needed, Iran must have violated U.N. regulations. North Korea has openly said they have created a nuclear weapon so the same must be true about them as well. “Mark Fitzpatrick of the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies said the approach with Tehran would be gentler than with Pyongyang,”(New York Times, Oct 17). North Korea’s testing of plutonium based warheads has been seen as a provocative act according to the White House. North Korea said that they would not give in to the (U.N.) threats, since they have become a nuclear state. According to the New York Times, Iran could not start mass production of nuclear warheads for another 3 to 10 years. But one big difference between Korea and Iran was Iran's conservative parliamentary speaker Gholam Ali Hadad-Adel‘s remark that Iran is ready to negotiate over its nuclear program. He also said that “discussion between Iranian nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani and EU foreign policy chief, Javier Solana has made some headway.” The U.N. has clamped down on N. Korea for good reason; they could and most likely do have atomic bombs. The U.N. has not openly said that there will be sanctions if North Korea does not suspend their nuclear program, but that is not because they don’t believe that they can enforce them. They want N. Korea to come back to the six country talks. In today’s world the threat of a nuclear war is real, and the difference between Iran and North Korea is considerable. The main difference between the two is one wants to cooperate with the U.N. and one does not.
