Children's Theater of Madison
Dear Educator,
This fall Children's Theater of Madison offers an opportunity for teachers and students to slip through the Looking Glass and explore an alternate universe in James DeVita's Looking Glass Land: The
Misadventures of a Girl Named Alice. It's a universe that challenges our way of seeing and hearing and thinking about the world. The production offers educators an opportunity to:
- Introduce the writings of Lewis Carroll
- Explore nonsense poetry and wordcraft through Carroll's
poems "Jabberwocky" and "The Walrus and the Carpenter"
- Discuss the relativity of time and the physics implied in
alternate universes
- Examine the critical thinking and strategy required in a
chess game
- Discuss how design and visual art conveys the ideas of a
live performance
Celebrate the talents of a local playwright, James DeVita, and local actors. Some of the performers will be the same age as your students! Talkbacks following the performances give students a
personal connection with the actors and director.
Don't miss a chance to capture the imaginations of your students with this magical production, and extend the learning into the classroom with activities and projects from the Looking Glass Land Study Guide. Please share this information with educators in your district.
Award-winning playwright and renowned APT actor James DeVita brings Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass to new heights of fun and imagination. Through a series of fantastic encounters, Alice learns that being a queen is not all it's cut out to be — and that the real joy is in the adventure of life itself! DeVita's adaptation includes all the familiar characters and lines of the beloved tale with some
modern twists that will even hold teenagers spellbound. So hold onto your (mad) hats while we take you on this zany ride up and down and back around! Most appreciated by children age 6 and up, teens and
adults.
The first matinee is October 16th, so please reserve your tickets NOW for this delightful production. Call Education Director, Terry Kerr, at 608-255-2080 or email terry@ctmtheater.org.
We want to make your trip to CTM as affordable as possible. Student matinee tickets are $8.00. Ticket and transportation subsidies are available, so please call if your school needs financial assistance.
If you have not received our new Educator's Brochure, please use this link http://www.ctmtheater.org/EducatorsBrochure.pdf to access the Student Matinee schedule and ticket information or visit the
Education page at our new website at www.ctmtheater.org.
For some students, a class trip to see a CTM play is the first time they have set foot in a theater. They will be surprised at the power of a live production to inspire wonder and make them think and feel.
We think you will find this a great opportunity to engage your students in a new level of discussion about the ideas in the play and the very human responses of its characters.
Space is limited so please consider reserving tickets for your school today! Help students experience the power and magic of live theatre. If you have any questions, please feel free to call us at 255-2080 or
email terry@ctmtheater.org. We are happy to assist in any way.
All the Best,
Terry Kerr

Teacher event at Scrap N Nook
"Hello All,
June is here which means summer, finally!! We would like to honor all teachers and homeschool educators. So on June 19th from 5-7pm we will be giving away goodie bags to all pre-registered (so I know how many to make) teachers and homeschool educators. During those 2 hours we will also have the entire store on sale with some amazing deals! (Savings up to 75%!!!)
There is no purchase necessary to get your free goodie bag, which I estimate to be worth about $50. However, we are asking 3 things: first that you pre-register, second that you show proof of teaching status or homeschool, and third we are asking each person to bring 1 non perishable food item for Second Harvest.
To pre-register just call 262-754-8839 or email us at scrapnnook@tds.net. If you have been forwarded this email and are unfamiliar with Scrap'n Nook please visit us online at http://www.scrapnnook.com. We are a scrapbook and rubberstamping store in New Berlin, Wisconsin.
Have a great day,

Summer Reading

http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/summerreadingsplash
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Milwaukee Public Library's summer reading program, Super Reader, begins May 19, 2008. It is designed for children 12 years old and younger.
There are three ways your child can achieve Super Reader status:
- Reading themselves
- Reading to someone
- Having someone read to them
How does your child become a Super Reader?
- Sign up at any Milwaukee Public Library and receive a reading folder to track reading minutes AND a certificate for a free mini sub from Cousins Subs
- Keep reading and visiting the library to complete five different levels, earning prizes at each level.
- Reach level five and earn free tickets to the Amazing AutoCats grand finale celebration on July 26th.
Why should I encourage my child to participate in this summer reading program?
- Reading takes practice (like any skill)
- The more your child reads or is read to, the better their reading skills will be
- Children who read over the summer maintain or increase their reading level
- One of the best ways for kids to improve their reading skills is to read for pleasure
Where can I find materials for my child to read?
- The Milwaukee Public Library is a great resource. It has something on most subjects that interest your child.
- The children's librarians are there to help your child find books that interest him/her.

A few summers ago, Education World and Barnes and Noble joined forces to present a HOT, HOT summer reading program. Thanks to our readers' contributions, we have gathered summer reading lists by grade, along with reviews of new books, interviews with favorite authors, and lots of ideas for summer projects to extend reading -- projects for kids to do with friends or on their own and projects for families to do together!

MTEF's Summer Tennis & Reading Program, presented in partnership with the MPS Recreation Department and Milwaukee County Parks, is available for Milwaukee youth between the ages of 6 and 17 at five neighborhood locations throughout the city. The program emphasizes basic fundamentals, league play, and the opportunity to participate in the citywide Mayor's Cup Junior Tennis Tournament on August 7th and 8th.
In addition to tennis, all summer sites include a highly structured fourty-five minute reading session and daily First Serve life skills development lesson during each three-hour block of instruction to help promote academic achievement. The reading curriculum, administered by MTEF Education Director Kathy Adelmeyer, will include books on humanitarian Arthur Ashe, such as Freedom Summer; Rosa; Young Arthur Ashe, Brave Champion; Arthur Ashe, Athlete and Activist; and Daddy and Me. Children participating in the first four sessions of the program will have the opportunity to participate in the Arthur Ashe Essay Contest. As a First Serve Chapter, MTEF has access to their award-winning comprehensive $1 million life skills curriculum. To learn more about First Serve, click here.
