American Government (for homeschoolers)
American Government (for homeschoolers)
Time: Monday and Thursday mornings from 9:15am-10:30am
Dates: September 10th - December 7th, with the week of Thanksgiving OFF (24 classes total)
Location: Harvest Community Church in Oak Creek, WI (Room 200)
Grades: entering 10th - 12th grade in fall
Cost: $150 per student, plus used textbook and approx. $7 or $8 (total) throughout the semester for xerox copies of additional readings from other texts (see description)
Textbook: The text will be James Q. Wilson and John J. DiIulio, American Government: Institutions and Policies. This is the most widely used text in high school Advanced Placement American Government courses. We'll use the 10th Edition, ISBN: 0618556621. New college-level textbooks are absurdly expensive, but there seem to be ample used copies available via Amazon.com and Half.com. (If you are unable to find something that you feel is reasonable and within your budget, please contact me for options.) Readings not included in the textbooks will be available as a packet of xeroxes at about 3 cents per page, or available on the web.
Payment information: Checks should be made payable to John McAdams and mailed to Laura Vazquez, 1212 Michigan Ave., South Milwaukee, WI 53172 by September 9, 2009. This will hold your place in the class. Checks will be held until the first day of class and can be postdated to September 10th. Payment will be made to Professor McAdams on the first day of class, so we will not be able to provide refunds after the deadline.
Description from Professor McAdams:
My American Government course for home schooled students will be at the level of an Advanced Placement course in a good high school, which is about the level of a Freshman college course.
It will be similar to, but not identical with, my Introduction to American Government course at Marquette.
http://www.marquette.edu/polisci/documents/020McAdams.pdf
Testing will involve multiple choice quizzes, two essay tests (a mid-term and a final), and a couple of short (3 page) papers, on topics to be assigned. For essay tests, four possible questions will be provided to the students ahead of time, with two chosen for tests. A typical paper might be about media bias on a particular piece of breaking news, or (say) Obama vs. Cheney on the War on Terror. Special accomodations will be made for students with learning disabilities - please contact me for options.
Classes will consist of some lecture, and a fair amount of discussion. It's always good to have students who are interested in politics and want to discuss, but nobody will be "put on the spot" if they don't feel like talking.
Students who successfully complete the course should be well-prepared for the College Board Advanced Placement Test in American Government. Students will be provided with grades.

Highlights from Adventures in Music: This was a rather eclectic semester with children creating their own compositions, learning melodies to music by famous classical composers, and internalizing the rhythm of Jazz!
All children (age 7-12) wrote their own composition to the poem “Fog” by Carl Sandburg. To prepare for this, the class acted out the poem and then brainstormed as to how one would musically create “fog”, a “cat”, “walking”, etc. Then, using a five note pentatonic scale, children wrote melodies and created their own harmonic accompaniments. The pieces turned out as unique as the children who wrote them. Some chose to write in 3/4 meter, some chose the more conventional 4/4 meter. Some chose a full range of sounds going from high to low which made these compositions especially interesting as instrumental pieces. Some chose to use a vocal range so that the piece could be sung. The result was a lovely collection of music that was well received at the Evening of Entertainment.
Learning to play the recorder was also a part of the past semester. Recorder sessions were used to reinforce note reading, to learn music theory such as “form”, and to play as an ensemble by using good recorder technique and musicianship skills. The children chose to perform three pieces at the Evening of Entertainment: a two part version of The Gospel Train; a Japanese round, Come Firefly Come, performed in two parts; and a two part arrangement of a 15th Century French melody.
In their study of jazz, children learned that jazz is highly structured even though there is much spontaneity. They learned to “swing” by emphasizing beats two and four in a measure and what is meant by “swinging eight notes”. The children also learned the importance of syncopation, some history of how jazz came to be an art form, and the rudiments of how to “scat”.
Art Studio: Ms Ballmann choose to have students study Wassily Kandinsky, a Russian-born French Expressionist painter and founding member of The Blue Riders, a Munich group of Expressionist painters so that students could learn proper technique as well as art history. The children were up to the challenge and learned much about drawing, texture, style, and composition. Says Alex, age 10, of his experience, “I learned a lot about perspective.”, and Amelia , age 12, states, “Working with Miss Betsy is lots of fun. We spent a lot of time on our drawings. I learned a lot of new water color techniques from working on our paintings, too.”
In community news, Betsy Ballmann was honored to be selected by the Greater Milwaukee Catholic Home Educators to present an art class to children at the Celebrate the Faith 2009 Catholic Homeschool Conference and Vendor Fair, April 24th and 25th at the Tommy Thompson Center in West Allis. Her class consisted of a study of a "Water-Lilies" painting by the Impressionist artist Claude Monet. Participants were also given background information on Monet's painting techniques, compositional considerations, inspiration, and motivation.
Drama Studio: At the Evening of Entertainment, the Master Players performed an original, witty, and contemporary version of "Rapunzel" called,”A Bird, a Prince, and a Gypsy” written and directed by drama instructor, Betsy Ballmann. The play featured music by famous composers set to original lyrics also written by Ms Ballmann and performed by the Adventures in Music Students. In the beginning of the semester students were given many exercises to learn proper acting and stage technique, then parts were assigned to students based on areas where they needed to grow. The result was a wonderful production summed up by Alex, age 10, “It was a great experience. My friends and I had a fun time, too!”
Creative Writing Studio: Guided by Ms Ballmann, students were encouraged to open their minds to new ways of writing. Says Amelia, age 12, “Miss Betsy would have us read our stories out loud. Then she would give us ideas and pointers. Sometimes she would read poems to give good examples of writing style.” A new student, John, age 10 stated, “ I've never written this was before and it was amazing! I was really inspired and learned how to use commas, too!” Elliot, age 9 another first time student to Master Studios states, “I've written very few things and this story I'm writing is the best! It's a great experience!”
Looking to the Future: Master Studios is offering summer programs and well as programs in the Fall. Please visit our website for a complete listing of classes!! |

Possible Government summer class for High School
This is from my friend Laura from Masters Touch. Please email her directly with any questions or to express interest in this possible class: levazquez76@hotmail.com
------------------------------------------------
American Government
Taught by John McAdams (for those new members who don't know, he's my father, and a Political Science professor at Marquette University).
6 week session, 4 days per week, in July and/or August (the equivalent of a college summer session)
The class would be for homeschooled highschoolers in grades 10, 11, and 12. The content and time required would be equivalent to a high school credit in American Government. The class would consist of lectures and discussion, with outside work and studying required. Exams and/or papers will be assigned, turned in, and graded. Students would also receive a grade for the class.
Cost: $150, plus two textbooks
Note: Regarding the cost, please keep in mind that he would be writing an entire curriculum for this class specifically, spending 6-weeks of his time focused on these students, grading papers and exams, etc. The same class at Marquette runs into the thousands. I'm just a good bargainer, LOL. =P
Location: TBD (potentially Harvest Community Church, Oak Creek)
Minimum students needed: 20
Again, I'm just trying to determine interest, if any, at this point. :) |

Teaching Writing: Structure and Style
A Two-Day Seminar for Teachers, Parents, & Tutors
Friday & Saturday, October 5 - 6, 2007 8:30 - 4:15 pm
Cost: $89.00/participant (2nd family member ½ price)
The structure and style syllabus teaches models and techniques for English composition which logically build upon each other, allowing students to become familiar and competent with a variety of writing formats and styles. As opposed to many "creative" writing approaches, this more classical system stresses modeling and builds a firm foundation of specific skills.
Students first make a "key word outline" and then rewrite from their notes, thus being freed from the problem of what to write about, so they are able to clearly focus on how to write well. As they master each structural model and stylistic technique, they develop great confidence, and consequently great creativity. The syllabus then gradually moves the student from dictated content toward "the blank page" using:
Eight different structural models, including:
* Note making and summarizing from notes; limiting skills.
* Summarizing narrative stories with the story sequence chart.
* Summarizing references (without copying the encyclopedia).
* Library research reports using multiple references and fused outlines.
* Topic - clincher paragraph format, techniques for titling.
* Creative writing, letters and writing from pictures.
* Formal essays and critique formats.
The Syllabus in Style introduces specific techniques to help students:
* "Dress-up" each paragraph with six different tools.
* Use a variety of sentence "openers."
* Judiciously choose literary "decorations."
* Learn English grammar in the context of USING it
rather than just memorizing terms and identifying parts of speech.
Nurturing Confident Communicators -
The Two Most Critical Components
An Evening Presentation for Teachers, Parents, Grandparents,
Families with children of all ages.
Friday, October 5, 2007 7:00 - 8:30 pm
Cost: Free and open to the Public!
Many parents and teachers assume that good readers will naturally or automatically become good writers. Others think that writing talent is just a natural ability--some have it others don't. Both are myths. History and observation show very clearly how good writers have developed, and what are the two most critical things parents and teachers can do to nurture a high level of aptitude--from a young age through high school. With humor and insight, Andrew will share the two easy but unbelievably powerful things that must be done at home and in the classroom to create confident communicators.
Student Writing Intensive
A Two-day writing class for students Grade 4 - 10+, with two additional video sessions & lesson plans
Tuesday & Thursday, October 2 & 4, 2007
Cost: $75.00/participant
This course serves both as an opportunity to introduce children to the Structure & Style approach, as well as a "boost" to students who have some experience. Parents and teachers are encouraged to observe whenever possible. Demonstration classes are a very important complement to our teacher courses. Four lessons will teach children specific models & techniques from the syllabus of Structure & Style, including how to:
- take notes & summarize from references. - "dress-up" a composition.
- structure a "cohesive" paragraph. - outline a report using multiple references.
- summarize a narrative story in 3 sections - use checklists to evaluate writing style.
- use a variety of sentence "openers."
Class size is limited to 24 students in each group. Parents and Teachers are encouraged to observe any or all class sessions. Pre-requisite: parent has attended TWSS. Schedule follows:
SWI - Group A (Grade 4-5) 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Day 1 - Outlines, Summary and Dress-up
Day 2 - Story Summary and Dress-up
Day 3 - Reference Summary & Paragraph Structure
Day 4 - Blank Page & Sentence Openers
SWI - Group B (Grade 6-7) 12:00 to 2:45 p.m.
Day 1 - Outlines, Story Summary and Dress-up
Day 2 - Reference Summary & Sentence Openers
Day 3 - Multiple Source Summary (with Mini-Books)
Day 4 - Creative Writing - Expository
SWI - Group C (Grade 8-10+) 3:15 to 6:00 p.m.
Day 1 - Outlines, Story Summary and Dress-up
Day 2 - Summarizing References & Sentence Openers
Day 3 - Multiple Reference Summary
Day 4 - Formal Essay & Advanced Style
Each session will last 2½ hours daily. Students may be asked to do minimal work at home to complete each day's project, but significant time is devoted to in-class writing and individual coaching. Previous experience with the Structure & Style syllabus may be helpful but is not required. Includes two days live instruction along with two DVDs, with additional lesson plans for practice throughout the year.
High School Essay Intensive
A One-Day Seminar for High School age students and teachers
Wednesday, October 3, 2007 8:30 - 3:30 pm
Cost: $50.00/participant (parents $25 if attending with student)
The High School Essay Prep class is an excellent way to get immediate experience and inside tips on how to do your best on the timed, 25 minute response to a prompt required on the new SAT test. Participants will actually write two full essays, carefully study and then apply the College Board evaluation criteria to sample essays, while receiving a detailed booklet of resources and lesson plans for continued practice.
Additionally, students will learn special structure and style tools for use in composing the college application "personal essay"--an entirely different type of writing task. The complete process will be presented: choosing the question, creating the outline, and polishing a final version. Participants will leave with a clear concept of the task, their own outline for an actual personal essay, and several new tricks and techniques to add to their repertoire.
Although this seminar is specifically designed for those who will be taking the SAT or submitting college applications within the next 1-2 years (and especially those teaching such students), it is also useful for general writing practice, tools and tips. It is open to all students, regardless of their experience with IEW courses or materials. A lot of actual writing is done during this six-hour class.
Some comments from past attendees in Alaska and California:
"I really didn't want to come, but my mom made me, and I am soooo glad I did. It's really going to help me, and I'm not so worried about the SAT essay any more."
"I took the SAT last spring and did okay, but I'm going to do it again and go for a better score. With this new information, I'm very sure I'll do better on the essay portion."
"Mr. Pudewa's seminar is like the rock concert of writing classes."
"This workshop just de-mystified the whole thing for me. Thanks!"
"Although I've been in many of your classes before, this was awesome. I especially loved the strategies for quickly planning and outlining a short essay, and the advice about how to formulate an opinion and just go for it, even if you're a little undecided about the question. Also the TRIAC paragraph model is awesome--it makes it so easy to organize a good paragraph."
"Really glad I came. I learned a lot. (And I got out of school, too!)"
"I came to be with my son, but I actually had a lot of fun myself. I sure wish I knew some of this when I was going into college!"
Meet Andrew Pudewa
Our presenter is the director of the Institute for Excellence in Writing and a father of seven.
Leading seminars and workshops throughout North America, he addresses issues relating to teaching, writing, thinking, spelling, and music with clarity, insight, practical experience, and humor.

Although he is a graduate of the Talent Education Institute in Japan, and holds a Certificate of Child Brain Development from the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, his best endorsement is from a young Alaskan student who called him "the funny man with the wonderful words."
