What is NaNoWriMo?
|
The Young Writers Program of National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a novel by midnight, November 30. The word-count goal for our adult program is 50,000 words, but our Young Writers Program allows participants who are 17 years old and younger to set reasonable, yet challenging, word-count goals.
The only thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It's all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.
Make no mistake: you will be writing a lot of strange stuff, and some of it will be just plain bad. But that's a good thing! For 30 days, you get to lock that inner editor in the basement, let your imagination take over, and just create!
As you spend November writing, you can draw comfort from the fact that, all around the world, other National Novel Writing Month participants of all ages are going through the same joys and sorrows of producing the Great Frantic Novel.
In 2007, over 100,000 adults participated through our main site, and 14,000 young writers participated through our Young Writers Program.
So, to recap:
What: To meet your word-count goal, and write a novel from scratch in one month's time. You will be able to enter your chosen word-count goals in your profiles starting September 1.
Who: You!
You should sign up on the Young Writers Program site if you are:
- 17 years old or younger participating on your own.
- In a K-12 teacher-lead class that is participating in NaNoWriMo.
- An educator facilitating NaNoWriMo in your classroom.
If you are 13 or older you can choose to sign up on the main site at www.nanowrimo.org. Just know that you will have to write 50,000 words since the adult site doesn't allow you to set your own word-count goal.
Why: The reasons are endless! To write freely without having to stress over spelling and grammar. To be able to talk about how cool our novels are any chance we get. To be able to make fun of real novelists who take far longer than 30 days to write their books.
When: You can sign up whenever you'd like to add your name to the roster of budding young authors and to participate in the forums. Writing begins November 1. To be added to the official list of winners, you must reach your word-count goal by November 30 at midnight. Once your novel has been verified by our web-based team of robotic word counters, the celebration begins.
Still confused? Just visit the How NaNoWriMo Works for Young Writers page! If you are an educator, visit the How NaNoWriMo Works for Teachers page.

For those looking for options for higher education....
Dear Home School Groups and Counselors,
I’m Scott Thompson, the admissions officer for the “Flying Badgers” at
Maranatha Baptist Bible College, Edgewood College, UW-Madison, and
UW-Whitewater. Now is the time for students in “senior” status to apply
for Air Force ROTC scholarships. Air Force ROTC has a great High-School
Scholarship Program (HSSP). These scholarships can pay full tuition,
$900/year for books, as well as a $300 to $500 (rises from freshman to
senior) monthly tax-free stipend. Upon college graduation, the student
is commissioned an Air Force Officer in one of many career fields.
It is my goal to get our scholarship opportunities to all qualified
students. And that is where I need your help. There are too many high
school seniors (especially home schooled seniors) who have never heard
of the Air Force ROTC HSSP as a means to fund college expenses. As you
know, home schooled students tend to rate very high academically as
compared to the public schools and can be very competitive for these
scholarships. If you’re interested in applying please visit
www.afrotc.com <http://www.afrotc.com/>. There is however, a *December
1^st application deadline* each year. I should note that a student need
not be on scholarship to enroll in the ROTC program and be commissioned
into the Air Force.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at
scthompson3@wisc.edu scthompson3@wisc.edu> or (608) 262-3440.
Thanks for your time and help.
Sincerely,

share your story
<<>>
I am working on a new homeschool book that will include stories - good and bad - from the average homeschool family. I'm looking for any anecdotes or short little stories on the following topics:
- homeschool sibling relationships
- the homeschool marriage
- scheduling
- housecleaning
- academics (how do you think your children compare to others - homeschooled or not?)
- extracurricular activities (are you too busy? do you enjoy these activities? do you think your children need more outside activities? why or why not?)
- are there issues that affect your ability to homeschool effectively? Have you considered quitting? Why did you decide to continue?
- what has been the biggest hindrance to your homeschool day?
Certain answers and portions stories may be used in a published homeschool book. Please don't send me anything that you would not want printed. If permitted, I will use your name, but this is not
mandatory. Due to the subject matter, if you want to remain annonymous, this is
also acceptable, though I am more likely to use your story or answers if I am able to use your name.
Please e-mail me PRIVATELY with any comments, questions, suggestions, answers, or feedback to the above mentioned questions. All responses will remain confidential (unless I use portions in a book).
Please forward this to other homeschool loops and homeschool friends you may have in other states. I will need responses from a wide range of homeschoolers before I can complete the project.
Thanks,
Sonya Haskins

Volunteer opportunity for teens/families
The purpose of my note is to invite home schooled children/teens and
their parents to become involved as volunteers at the SHARE
warehouse. SHARE is involved in helping meet the food needs of the
communities we serve. We are a non-profit food buying "club" with a
community based distribution system. We are totally volunteer
dependent. That volunteer labor force enables us to offer both
frozen and fresh products at 30-50% off what is normally charged at
the grocery store. Many of our clients have financial restraints
such as single mothers, seniors, the disabled, those out of work, and
even families just trying to stay on a budget. We currently serve
186 communities throughout Wisconsin, Upper Michigan and Northern
Illinois and help 21000 people each month.
One week each month we assemble the food orders for the month and
need help at our warehouse to do so. This is a great opportunity for
families to work together and for children to learn the importance of
giving back and helping others in need. It exposes young people to a
work environment, interacting with others they may not know, and
teamwork toward a common goal. It is a practical life experience.
I would appreciate discussing with you further how I might reach out
to the home schooled in our area and offer this opportunity. Please
visit our website for further insights into what SHARE is. I hope to
hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Bill TimkenVolunteer Coordinator-SHAREPO

HOMESCHOOL PRODUCTION...ROLES AVAILABLE
|
“The Importance of Being Earnest”
Gifford School, Franksville
July 26-28, 2007
Our Homeschool Student Production is well under-way.
We have the Auditorium reserved. We have Scripts. We made $67.85 at last Monday’s Bake Sale. We even have a few business ads already sold for the play program, including a back page sponsor!.
However, we are earnestly seeking more homeschool students to be involved on our Production Team.
- We still need some acting roles filled. In fact, as of this very second, it looks like we may have 2 good character acting roles (1 male, 1 female) still open.
- We are also looking for some “extras”
- Someone to choreograph a very short dance (waltz-type) sequence.
- Some more students are still needed to fill some behind-the-scenes jobs, like: Costumes, Make-up, Posters/Signs, Ushers, etc.

Exchange student housing needed
Teenage students are coming from Spain June 21 just for the summer. They are here to improve on their English skills, learn about our culture and experience American life while immersed into a host family. It's an excellent opportunity for families teaching their children Spanish or even if their children play Soccer, students from Spain love to play Soccer or Football as they call it.
Hosting one of our students is truly a "feel good" opportunity. Interested families can contact Irma Majors at 800-593-2644 or by email at rose_bnb@yahoo.com

JRA is anticipating a very busy year in 2007 with regard to product evaluation studied for children?s products. We would like to ask you to help us by spreading the word to all of your family and friends who have infants and toddlers (ages 0 to 4 years old).
Simply forward this email along and ask them to click the link provided or share with them the information below:
JRA, J. Reckner Associates, Inc. is an opinion research firm with its corporate headquarters in Montgomeryville, PA and branch offices in Exton, PA, Philadelphia, PA, Mount Laurel, NJ, White Plains, NY, and Oak Creek, WI. We have been conducting consumer research for the past 15 years and work for many nationally known companies. Some of our clients are major manufacturers of food and beverages, household products, baby care products, nursery products, and many other "child-focused" products. JRA conducts many types of research on behalf of these clients; from taste tests and home usage tests, to telephone surveys, web surveys, in-person interviews, and focus groups.
People who participate in our product tests and surveys have the opportunity to express their opinions about the products and services that are available. Since we conduct hundreds of surveys on many different types of products throughout the year and individual participation is limited, we need to include many households. Most importantly, we pay you cash incentives for your time!

homeschoolers wanted for TV show
OK, I confess! My family watches the TV reality show Wife Swap. I know the name sounds awful, but its really not about that! The show has had homeschool families and/or Christian families on it from time to time and some are better than others. Would I ever try out for the show? No, but only because my house is too messy! Of course, the "new" mom usually gets the family to clean it up......hmmmm. Anyway, if your interested, or know someone who might may be interested, then read on.....
My name is Julia Jenkins and I am a casting producer for ABC's hit reality show 'Wife Swap.'
If you are unfamiliar with the show, Wife Swap is a fascinating story of what happens when two married couples see themselves and their spouses in a whole new light. Time Magazine calls Wife Swap "a riveting examination of family values." The New York Post says, "It should be called 'Life Swap' because it's not just the wives who learn something here. It's the families."
Wife Swap is now looking for families for season three! We are looking for families that are involved in home-schooling. I think it is an amazing dynamic that we can bring to our show. Let's show America about the benefits of home-schooling.
The premise of Wife Swap is simple: for six days, two wives from two different families with very different values exchange husbands, children and lives (but not bedrooms) to discover what it's like to live a different woman's life.
Here at 'Wife Swap,' families not only learn something, but they get to teach a family something about their own lives. We look for a two-parent home with at least one child between the ages of 6 and 17 living at home fulltime.
We are currently casting for our third season, so don't miss out on this amazing experience! Families that appear on the show receive $20,000 as a thank you. And if you refer a family that appears on the show you would receive $1000.
If you have a family and you are interested in applying for the show, or if you know of any great families that you would like to refer, please EMAIL: julia.jenkins@rdfusa.com |

Homeschool article
I just received this email from a reporter who is looking for:
* people in their 20s who were homeschooled as children * people in their 20s who homeschool their children * people in their 20s who went to college who are homeschooling * people who were homeschooled who are now homeschooling their children.
Please go ahead and repond directly to the reporter. His name is Neil Bartlett and his email address is: neilbartlett@mhtc.net
More information about him and his article is below.
------------------------------------------ Hi, Rebecca. My name's Neil Bartlett.
I'm a freelance journalist and also have been HSing our two boys, with my wife, for about 12 years now.
I'm interested in interviewing some HSers who are in their early or mid 20's, perhaps who've graduated from college, for an article on the 'next generation of homeschoolers.' Some of my questions are:
-- What about these kids' lives is different from regularly schooled kids?
-- What aspects are the same?
-- Do they perceive their HSing experience as having been a positive or negative one? In what ways?
-- Are there any trends that you're aware of with these folks? For example, a lot of them have started their own businesses, are going into politics, etc?
-- What does a graduate think of the common criticisms of homeschooling?
-- Are they planning to HS their kids? Are there any who've actually started doing so?
I know that each HSer is different...but do you have any thoughts, observations and/or suggestions for me? Other folks I should contact?
if you have time to respond via email, I'd be in your debt.
Thank you. Best wishes
Sincerely,
Neil Homeschool.com

Dr Phil......Only one way for a child to learn?
Do you have a strong opinion on what's the best way for a child to learn? Do you think boys differ in their learning styles from girls and should be taught in separate classroom? Is it your belief that schooling your child in the home is a better educational environment than a classroom? Do you feel that private schools offer a much better education than public schools? Or do you think your child just shouldn't go to school at all? If you want to talk to Dr. Phil about what way is the best way for a child to learn tell us your story!

Baby shower for family in need
Hi everybody! I have an opportunity to bless a family by coming to a baby shower this coming Sat. July 8th at 1:00 p.m. A homeschool mom I'm acquainted with has a son, Michael, who is 18 & is a brand new father of a baby boy :)
Michael is living with his mom while the mother of this little boy is living with her parents so Michael needs almost everything for this baby.
What is a greater need than even all the baby paraphernalia is that Michael is doubting God' s love for him and really needs to be ministered to with some love and kindness for his soul. My friend first just asked if we could get the word out about the need for baby things. (They have a crib and a bath and are going to buy a car seat. But, they need everything else.)
I heard recently about a couples shower where a whole church fellowship blessed a couple by giving them a shower but also took the time to give godly advice about marriage to them. I asked the mom if us giving a shower FOR Michael would bless him and she really believes it would.
The baby weighs 7 lbs. 15 oz. so he'll be out of the newborn size almost immediately. I think he's a 0-3 mos. or 0-6 mos. size. It would be great to have some new stuff at the shower, but the family would also be appreciative of used items as well. So even if you can't come to the shower you can give old baby items and have fun collecting things from rummage sales.
Michael's mom is a single mom working two jobs and I know this is a financial burden that's more than she can handle right now. So, thanks in advance for anything you can do to help whether it's come to the shower or find things for the baby. You can give items to me and I'll pass them on to the family.
The shower will be this Sat. at 1:00 p.m. at the family's home in Franklin. I think it might mean a lot to him if several dads could to support Michael in his new fatherhood. So, if you can spare your husband this Sat. this might be a sweet time for our guys to minister to a young man's heart who is pretty scared and overwhelmed. Also you could be thinking about something you'd say to Michael during a time of sharing that you think might bless him in his journey as a father.
Please feel free to come even if you don't know them personally. I haven't met Michael either, but I know how baby showers can bless and I feel sure we're going to bless an 18 year old daddy with this one!
Email me for the address or to make arrangements to deliver baby items to the shower: michjas4@wi.rr.com |
