Unit Study Companion for the Book of Virtues
Patty Thompson, who runs the Shiver Academy Blog, has just completed a wonderful, HUGE project -- a Unit Study Companion for the Book of Virtues by William J. Bennett, especially for homeschoolers. Each unit covers 10 of the stories/poems/essays that are included in the Book of Virtues. Each story has worksheets, notebook pages, vocabulary, character study sheets, copywork, 1-2 projects (plus a long-term project) and a Lapbook with an optional unit wrap up activity. And to top it off a full lesson plan for older kids, and a separate one for primary aged children.
The full Study is a whopping 992 pages long (!) and the download is quite large (18.93 MB) - but Patty also has links to individual units available if you just want to download them one at a time. Each unit is roughly 100 pages, but it is not required to DO all those pages. For instance, if you do the worksheets you probably shouldn't worry about the notebook pages. If your children are young, you probably should skip the projects. If they are really young, just do the wrap up after reading the stories. In short, tweak the materials to fit your family's needs.
To get your copy: Click here to go to Patty's download page. You'll find the link(s) to the Book of Virtues Companion on the right hand column of the page, under the heading "Book of Virtues". The complete project is the first link, or individual units may be downloaded separately using their respective links. |

Free book surviving current economic crisis
Patrick Morley, a former Florida real estate developer whose company was one of Florida’s 100 largest privately held companies, spent years fighting off a multimillion dollar bankruptcy after the Tax Reform Act of 1986. He has since become a best-selling Christian author and head of an international ministry to men (Man in the Mirror).
Pat’s new book, How to Survive the Economic Meltdown features 35 hard earned spiritual, practical and financial survival strategies based on lessons learned during his own personal financial crisis. Every day for seven long years he woke up not knowing whether or not he would be forced into bankruptcy. By God’s grace, he was able to avoid bankruptcy and not only survive, but experience extraordinary spiritual growth. Ultimately, our prayer is that what Pat learned during a nightmarish season of his life will help others to get through their tough times today.
Pat’s passionate about getting a copy of this book into the hands of every person who wants one—even if it’s for free (download a free PDF copyfree PDF copy). We’re also making the book available at huge discounts (as low as $1.95) so leaders can distribute them through their churches, businesses, and ministries. |

Hobby Warehouse Sale & gift certificate
Hobby Engineering http://www.HobbyEngineering.com is a great web site
for educational science kits, robot kits, plastic and wood model kits
and more. It is owned and operated by Al Margolis. This weekend Al
is running a pre-CPSIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act) sale
in his warehouse and on-line and is making a special offer to
Homefires' (http://www.homefires.com) readers/subscribers/fans.
If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area the best way to participate
is by going to the Hobby Engineering Warehouse in South San Francisco
this Saturday, January 31 from 10am to 3pm. The warehouse sale will
have the best prices and the most items including many products not
listed on the web site.
This link provides a map and more details about the sale:
http://www.hobbyengineering.com/warehousesale20090131.html
Since Hobby Engineering is a do-it-yourself kind of web site, this is
a do-it-yourself gift certificate. On an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper
neatly write "$25 Homefires Gift Certificate" along with your email
and postal addresses. Give that to the cashier and $25 will be
subtracted from the total (sorry, no cash back!) and you will be
added to Al's mailing lists for future offers.
There is no minimum purchase and there will be lots of items for less
than $25 so you can walk away with free educational products by using
your Homefires Gift Certificate. Of course, Al will do his best to
tempt you to stock up on interesting project materials for this
spring and summer.
HOW TO GET THIS DEAL ONLINE!
If you can't make it to the warehouse this Saturday you can get the
same deal on-line from now through Sunday night. Just place an order
at http://www.HobbyEngineering.com and type "$25 Homefires Gift
Certificate" in the checkout comments box and $25 will be subtracted
from the total before your credit card is processed. There is no
minimum order and, of course, no refunds.
Al's shopping cart doesn't know about this deal but the discount will
be shown on your receipt that comes in the box when you receive your
order. (In other words, the shopping cart will not reflect the
discount when you place your online order, but the discount will be
given and will show up on the receipt that comes in the box when your
order is delivered to your home.) Yes, that's a little confusing, but
if you have questions or concerns contact Al at almargolis@gmail.com .
Enjoy!

Free audio lecture
No individual is more synonymous with the strength, spirit, and success of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s than Martin Luther King, Jr. But what were the inspirations for his beliefs in equal rights and nonviolent resistance? As a thank you for being our customer and in honor of Black History Month, here is a free audio lecture: Martin Luther King, Jr.: Stride Toward Freedom, delivered by award-winning Professor Dennis Dalton of Barnard College, Columbia University.
Martin Luther King, Jr.—through his stirring speeches, introspective writings, and effective leadership—is an essential part of our national consciousness. His powerful legacy remains with us even today, more than 50 years after the Montgomery bus boycott sparked the American civil rights movement. While King's 1968 assassination was a tragic chapter in American history, it did nothing to prevent the work he spent so much of his life carrying out. As Professor Dalton notes, "Violence ended King's life, but his increased stature in America since his death shows that his voice was not silenced."
Listen to Martin Luther King, Jr.: Stride Toward Freedom between now and Monday, February 2, 2009, to discover how the words and actions of this iconic civil rights leader embodied the core values of freedom. |

"You've Got the Time!"
Faith Comes by Hearing and hearing by the Word of God.” (Romans 10:17)
If you could listen to the Bible everyday for 40 days, would it impact your life? Would it challenge you to live each day as Christ taught us to? Would it provide peace in troubled times? Did you know that over 65% of Christians in America have never read the entire New Testament?
Take the challenge! – Listen through the entire New Testament in 40 days
… just 28 minutes a day!
You can listen at home, in your car, on your computer, or even while exercising! But most importantly, choose to engage in the listening.
