The Top 100 Educational Websites of 2009

Posted in Web Resources

Homeschool.com’s Product Testers have done it again! They have selected the Top 100 Educational Websites of 2009. We asked our 7,000 Product Testers to send us a list of the educational sites that they like the best and use the most often. The three sites mentioned most often were:

The Top Sites for 2009
1)
www.starfall.com
2)
www.edhelper.com
3)
www.time4learning.com

Note: Normally we would not include a commercial site on this list. However, so many people nominated Time4Learning, it seemed unfair to leave them off the list.

All of these sites are safe, proven and used by thousands of parents just like you. So grab a cup of coffee, put your kids on your lap, and have fun exploring these wonderful sites.

More Kids Being Home Schooled (Milwaukee Journal article)

Posted in Homeschool News

More Kids Being Home Schooled
By MIKE BRODY,
MyFox National

The number of home-schooled kids rose to 1.5 million in 2007, up 74 percent from when the Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics started keeping track in 1999, and up 36 percent since 2003, according to USA Today.

Traditional surveys show that the No. 1 reason parents choose to home school their children is religion, but a new factor arose in 2007 -- an interest in a "non-traditional approach."

"We wanted to identify the parents who are part of the 'unschooling' movement," Gail Mulligan, a statistician at the Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics told USA Today. Most home schoolers generally follow standard curriculum and grading systems, but "unschoolers" create their own systems, according to Mulligan.

If you're considering home school for your kids, check out these factors before making your decision.

Homeschool.com and Homeschool World are just two of them many Web sites that will help you get started.

Let's Say Thanks! Send free postcards to troops

The mission of Let's Say Thanks is to provide a way for individuals across the country to recognize U.S. troops stationed overseas. By submitting a message through this site you have the opportunity to send a free personalized postcard greeting to deployed servicemen and women.

The postcards, depicting patriotic scenes and hometown images, were selected from a pool of entries from children across the country.

All you have to do is click on your favorite design and either select the message that best expresses your sentiment or draft a personal note. The postcards are then printed on the Xerox iGen3® Digital Production Press and mailed in care packages by military support organization Give2TheTroops®.

Xerox is committed to helping people across the nation express their gratitude to our troops overseas. The launch of this program is aimed at reminding them how much Americans appreciate their service.

FREE Screening of Pro-Life movie: Come What May

Posted in Web Resources

Dear Homeschooling Parents and Students:

Homeschooling Today magazine is sponsoring a significant event this week that we want to share with you. Starting yesterday, there is a FREE Online Screening of Come What May on GodTube and the American Family Association. Come What May is a feature film made by forty homeschooled students, including a dozen from Patrick Henry College.

This nationwide event is helping to get the word out about Advent Film Group (AFG) and their inaugural film. It also showcases the work of homeschoolers who are helping shape our culture. Most importantly, it is starting to help affect the November elections for pro-life candidates, perhaps even the Presidency.

Over 210,000 people have viewed part or all of the movie since it went into a "trial period" this weekend. The film is notable in that even audiences of "choice" have said that Come What May is causing them to "reconsider their position."

You can assist us AFG and Voters by watching the movie online and sending email referrals to friends and family. Please also consider buying a copy so that Advent Film Group can make many more films such as Come What May.

Here are some important information:

FREE Screening of Pro-Life movie: Come What May
For the next few days, October 27 - 31, you can watch Come What May for FREE by visiting:
