Lesson 6- Writing Cameras Part 1
Maybe you're wondering why I posted a picture of a camera and some paints in a lesson about WRITING. Here's why: A good author should "paint a picture" for her/her readers.
A good author should "take pictures" for his/her readers.
But there's just one problem. Authors don't use cameras; they don't use paints; they can't make movies to show their readers what things look like! Authors have one tool: WORDS
It's important that the words we write are able to "paint a picture" or "make a photograph" in the reader's mind.
I like to take along my "writing camera" when I'm writing a story. If I see something in the story that I want readers to see too, I snap a picture of it with my imaginary camera. Then I make sure I use specific words to describe the scene that I see in my head.
The worksheets today are going to be fun! But you can't peek ahead. You must do the first worksheet without looking at the second one, or you'll ruin the lesson for yourself. You will be drawing and coloring a picture for this lesson---a picture of a really cool, very awesome, fabulous ship. If you can get somebody else in your family to draw a really cool, very awesome, fabulous ship, you will have someone to compare pictures with. As you draw and color, you may begin to see that perhaps words like really, cool, very, awesome, and fabulous don't tell you much about what kind of ship to draw. In fact, these words tell you (and your reader!) nothing. Words like these are called "dead" words, and you will learn to avoid using them. Instead, you can practice using words that help your reader see, smell, taste, hear, and feel what you are describing.
Learning to use a Writing Camera is such an important skill that we will spend 3 lessons on it.
Your assignment: If at all possible, post the picture you drew of your awesome, wonderful, magnificent ship on your blog. Next week, I will post the picture of the ship I use when I do this assignment with a group of students. They are all amazed at what my ship actually looks like. OBVIOUSLY, my "dead" words don't help the students draw the ship I'm describing to them!
1) Make a list of more "dead" words and post them. At least 5. Ask your family if they can think of dead words, too. Don't post the ones from the worksheet. Think of others.
2) Post the "Tour of Your Bedroom" (or other room) and sign Mr. Linky. When I read it, I don't want to find any "dead" words. I want you to paint a picture (or take a snapshot) of your room using WORDS, so I can "see" it in my mind.
3) Have you started a story yet with those wonderful characters you've been creating? Remember, you can go back and download more character charts anytime you need them to create more characters. Your story can be full of memorable characters!
I did it!!! I did a tour of our family room. It has alot of titles, which you will hear about in my post! I know that I have told you this before, but thanks so much for doing this! I am having so much fun! Now I have to wait another LOOOOOONG week for next Wednesday. When you say do it at your own speed, for me that is almost everyday I want a new lesson!!! :-)
Amy
Somehow Mr. Linky got into my post, but I don't know how to get it back out! Oops! I guess that when someone does this assignment and they come to my blog, they can sign if they did it! LOL!
Ashley
Sorry~ i didn't really know! Oops~ I am not really good with " dead" words~
Yeah~ that is my room~ messy! I share it with Gracie, and she doesn't help much with keeping it clean! LOL!
hello!
here's lesson 6!
when reading my tour of my bedroom please keep in mind that it it rather odd shaped so the floor-space is very limmited.
thanks!
Margo
I just got updated with another lesson! I hope I did it all right. I did a tour of my bedroom. Oh, BookLover made me a template for my writing blog!

Mrs. Marlow,
Thank you so much for the long comment.
You were exactly right about both Marisa's and Jessica's feelings! You are good at this, though I suppose you've had a little practice. :)
That is so neat, one of my goals is to become fluent in Spanish. I don't hear it a lot, though, so I, too, am a lot better at reading it. I can usually get the main idea of what a sentence is saying, but I still have MUCH more vocabulary to memorize. I like it though; it's fun. I think that is so cool that you went to Costa Rica. I have a friend who spent a few weeks in Puerto Rico and she said she learned so much by being surrounded by Spanish speakers. I think that would be awesome! Thank you for offering to answer any questions I have; that is so kind of you and so encouraging! Thank you so much.
Thank you also for reading my rough draft. Though I have taken a break from writing that story, I'm excited about deciding exactly what will happen and finishing it! I just love writing stories because there are endless possibilities and outcomes! I love choosing the big and small things.
Well, I should be off to bed but I wanted to let you know that I've posted my 6th lesson. It was tons of fun!
Blessings,
Emma
I sent you a message to try to have you see the
ship. It is also in my photos. Please don;t try to reply to the e-mail through e-mail because I did not supply a return address.
" Well, lets say we walk into my room, first thing you see is my overly paper-cluttered desk, with paper-piles on 3 sections of it, and my schoolbooks on the other section, also there are a few action figures and some letters in there somewhere (LOL). To the left of that is some non-unpacked boxes, and the little desk that has my clock on it, with a drawer stuffed of small items, like books, my CD player and others."
I'm done with lesson six. Thank you so much again for doing this, I actually enjoy writting now. Believe me, my mom is also very thankful!
I had a little trouble thinking of "dead words" so I hope they're actually "dead".

This lesson was great fun!!! My brother drew a ship too, and his idea was quite different than mine! My room is so full of stuff, it took a long time to describe it!!!!:P
