Our Journey Through Home School

Okay, I'm finding Homeschool Blogger annoying. Some of the things it had previously (like a tool bar when you are doing a new entry) are no longer here! You can tell I haven't been on here in awhile. All that I want to do is just make some text BOLD and add a link and I don't have that option. Grrrrr!

• Dec. 4, 2008 - Baby Update

Posted By MarlaMom in Baby
Today we went to the midwife's office for our first ultrasound! When I went in last week, I was thinking that my due date was February 20 - my calculation since that was my first visit during this pregnancy. I was quickly corrected by the nurse who told me according to my last period, I was due on January 20! Yikes! It was a little surprising because I'm usually right on, but this time I got mixed up.

Anyway, at the ultrasound today the tech said I was measuring 30 to 31 weeks, not 33 weeks (which would change the due date from Jan. 20 to anywhere between Feb. 4 and 11. I'm so far along that its hard to get an accurate "reading". But, no matter what, I'm glad that I don't have to wait until Feb. 20. What a blessing!

By the way, it's a BOY!

• Nov. 13, 2008 - Don't Be Afraid, Be Prepared!!!

Posted By the luthers life

What I have noticed the last few months and especially over the last week is a spirit of fear amongst people. People are very frightended over the economic crisis(depression) the United states is currently experiencing. I understand the concern as some of my dear friend's have been affected by lay-offs, lowered wages and reduction in hours. These are scary times but God has not called us to a spirit of fear. The last couple of years some of the most conservative economists have warned these things would happen and until recently most people didn't believe it. Now that these things are very evident and we see them happen, here our just a few things we can do to prepare ourselves to get through these times if you are still in a position to prepare!!

1.Remember to thank God daily for every provision and realize everything comes from him.

2. Continue to faithfully give to the Lord.

3. Save money. Pinch those pennies to save for the inevitible.

4. Pay down the debt you currently have.

5. Stay out of the stock market for the time being until there is some stability in the market.

6. Store food items that are easily stored, which is a good tip for any crisis.

7. Teach the children to be content with less and how cutting back will benefit your family.

8. Be mindful of those who are currently struggling and offer any help they may need!!!

Again these are not normal times and I believe the election last week secured us a very serious financial crisis(Depression), If he sticks to the policy he promised in his campaigning. Remember the new Deal and the trend currently taking place which is repeating these government interventions. It's not fear mongering but rather a warning to take these things seriously. No one regrets being over prepared but they do regret being under prepared!!

• Nov. 11, 2008 - Kids are funny!!

Posted By MarlaMom
I was reading Grace4Gayle's blog and she mentioned something about Obama that reminded me of a conservation my children and I had in our van the day before the election.

My oldest two wanted to know why my husband and I were voting for McCain/Palin so as much as possible I explained it to them saying we really didn't want Obama in office because of his view on abortion. We then talked a little about McCain's views, etc. but Obama's name, of course, kept coming up.

A few minutes into the conversation my four year old DD piped up, "OBAMA? He's supposed to be dead!" which sent the rest of us into hysterics. She, obviously thought we were saying "A LLAMA" and was quoting "Emperor's New Groove", but we sure found it funny.

Later on that night we were making pudding and I told my oldest daughter, age 10, to get out the metal measuring cup to measure the milk. I mentioned that when I was little, I liked to drink milk out of that same cup because it always tasted so much colder. She asked if she could have some milk in the cup to drink when we were done measuring and I told her yes. My 7 year old DS then begged to have some milk, but missed the whole metal cup conversation and poured his into a plastic cup.

My 10 year old poured herself some milk in the cup and said, "Yum, this makes me feel like a Prairie Girl!"

My son (who doesn't always have great hearing) said, "Yeah, this milk makes me feel like a Fairy Boy!"

Once again, for the second time that day, I found myself in hysterics. Fairy Boy! I hope not!!!

• Nov. 11, 2008 - New Baby due in February

Posted By MarlaMom in Baby
Did I mention I was pregnant? This newest one is due on his/her "big" brother's birthday - February 20. Our youngest, at the moment, will be two on that day so we shall see when this newest one will make its appearance on that day or be late like Josiah was.

My husband's birthday is March 3 so that would be nice also.

I'm using a charter school this year to homeschool. I know, I know. There are many out there who would disagree with me using the public school system, but after praying about it and my need for more accountability in homeschooling my children, this was what seemed to be the answer.

It's not a permanent solution - there are so many things I don't like about using it such as: teaching to California Standards; the push to make sure certain subjects are done and how that causes the children and I to lose the joy of homeschooling; and how often it just seems like we're doing school at home instead of homeschooling. There is little spontaneity and delight-driven learning.

On the flip side, I'm doing school a whole lot more than i was. Knowing that I have to sign a piece a paper at the end of each month saying my children did school on certain days is a definite motivator.

We have gone off a bit from the trail were supposed to be following, though, the last week or so. We are supposed to be doing California History this year (for all three of the kids) and I decided to do a sideline of Pilgrim History.

The church we attend does a Reformation Day each year instead of a Harvest Party celebrating key figures in Reformation history. This year they decided to do the Puritans/Pilgrims/Separatists. In light of that, I started reading "The Mayflower Secret" by Dave and Neta Jackson to them - a fictionalized version of the Mayflower story through 13-year-old Elizabeth Tilley's eyes. I have had my children (at least the 8 and 10 year olds) drawing pictures as I read and I decided that a notebook would be a great way for them to keep the pictures. Of course, I'll have them do other things also in the notebook for history, science, writing, and reading.

So far I plan for them to: copy the Mayflower Charter, write about the Mayflower's journey and the settlement of Plymouth, choose some of the herbs that the Indians taught the Pilgrims about and do some research on them, include their art, write poems, possibly draw a map of the location of Plymouth, do a timeline, as well as other possibilities. Today I had them make their notebook covers to spark their interest and have a place to put their research and work.

For my younger two (ages 7 and 4) I'll simplify it a bit and have them do some Autumn activities also. Coloring, study of pumpkins and autumn leaves, as well as reading them more simplified versions of the Pilgrim stories and dictating it back to me.

I found a link to another homeschooling mom's Thanksgiving notebook project that inspired me. She has done several notebooking projects that I thought were creative and sparked my creativity in turn. I don't agree with everything they study, but I'm looking for format at this point. If you know of other websites with photos of ideas for notebooking, let me know. I'm definitely a novice and sometimes I spend too much time thinking, and not enough time doing!

• Oct. 29, 2008 - Who Needs To Be Concerned About An Obama Administration

Posted By the luthers life

1)      Those Who Call Themselves Christians and uphold a moral code:

Hate crimes legislation would criminalize Pastors who speak out against homeosexuality. This legislation has passed both the democrat congress and senate and been vetoed by President Bush. Obama spoke before a crowd mocking Exodus and Leviticus and the Sermon on the Mount. He surrounds himself with some who have called religion a crutch.

2)   Jewish People: Obama has surrounded himself with people who have been Palestinian sympathizers according to a video held by the LA times. His pastor and Jesse Jackson have also spoke out against the Jews.

3)   Unborn Children: All are at risk currently but more could become the victims of Partial-birth abortion which Obama promises to make legal again. He voted against a bill in Illinois that would have provided care to babies who survived abortions. These children may also be at risk. He has been labeled the most radical abortion candidate we have ever seen.

Physical or Mentally disabled, terminally ill, or elderly People: Obama supports euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Gun Owners: Obama supports restricting gun rights, which may take away your ability to defend your own families.

Homeschoolers: Obama believes that parents should not have the right to educate their children at home with little intervention from the government.

Small Business Owners: Who make $250,000 per year or foresee this happening. (Sounds like it’s changed over the last couple days to $150,000) Your taxes will be increasing, causing you who are struggling in a tough economy, to have less money in your pocket. You may not be motivated to achieve growth if more money will be taken from you. They may also be fined for not providing adequate healthcare to their employees giving them just another reason to close up shop.

Anyone whose employer makes over $250,000 per year ($150,000): Many employers have already said they will slow growth of their companies by laying off employees, going over seas, or just closing their doors.

Those Subject to Capital Gains Tax: You may pull some of your investments in the U.S out, as Obama has promised to raise this tax. This will cause less investment in U.S companies, which is vital to grow our economy.

Those who pay, payroll taxes: Social Security and Medicare. Obama has said these may go up.

Those who currently have Personal Retirement Accounts: Many democrats propose letting the government take control of these. Obama may support this but has not decided yet. The government would than distribute a certain amount each month when you retire and require you to put 5% in,  which would all be put into your Social Security Account.

Those who Value their relationship with their doctors: The ability to make your own decision. You do not want to wait months to get into your doctor. With a candidate who is not pro-life and a government in charge of healthcare, deciding what treatments we will be able to give and who we should give them to could be a very dangerous combination.

Those Who Respect the U.S Constitution: In a 2001 interview Obama stated that The Constitution is a charter of Negative Liberties. I think he madeh is position on the constitution very clear for us.

Those who Have Children: The liberal congress and senate has toyed with the idea of mandatory Mental Health Evaluations for all children. Do you want anyone to have the right to diagnose mental illnesses your child has accept your own doctor at your request.

Those who Speak Out against anything from homosexuality to Islam: Also the Obama administration if he becomes president. The presidency is all that is stopping hate crime legislation from passing. A reporter asked some tough questions of Joe Biden and has taken a lot of slack for it. The Mainstream Media is already afraid to tell the truth.

Those who Support the First Amendment: The fairness doctrine already passed through the congress and the senate and was vetoed by president Bush. This would require anyone on the airways to present both sides of an issue and is seen as something that may destroy talk radio and Christian radio and could eventually affect the internet. Obama supports this.

Professional Sports Fans: The owner of the Miami Dolphins says he will sell the team if Obama wins to save him the burden of higher taxes. He wou;d rather give the money to charity.  I doubt he is the only one.

Those who may be affected by Affirmative Action: Particularly white males applying for jobs or those trying out for sporting teams where minorities and women have also applied may suffer with more affirmative action as Obama says is needed.

Those who Believe churches and charitable organizations are the way to help the Poor: It in not the government taking from the rich involuntarily, and giving to the poor.

Those who pay Federal income taxes: 40% of Americans do not pay these taxes and will get a check at the end of the year, Money they did not earn.

Those connected to the Auto Industry: This industry is struggling and will struggle more by more fuel-efficiency standards for their vehicles, they can not afford to implement when they are struggling for survival.

Those in the Military: Obama says he will cut defense spending by 25%, putting our men and woman in the armed forces in harms way and jeopardizing the safety of the American People.

Those Who believe people should enter the U.S legally: Not be granted drivers licenses for breaking the law.

Those concerned about terrorism and international threats: Joe Biden has guaranteed an international crisis with-in the first six months of an Obama administration to test him.

Union Members: Obama has commited to help unions regain some of their control they have lost. The only problem is that we are in a global economy. If these unions lobby for higher wages and healthcare, the company may just go overseas where taxes are lower or close their doors.

Those who view patriotism as love for country, it’s citizens and it’s flag: Not paying higher taxes as Joe Biden suggests.

Those who Pay Property Taxes: You will be affected by higher property taxes to make up for the loss of taxes due to rising foreclosures due to higher unemployment rate

Those who are renters: Rental income is usually a supplemental income, causing those who may be taxed higher through property and income taxes to get rid of rental properties

Those who are unemployed: With an increasing amount of unemployed people due to the recession and Obama’s tax policies, unemployment compensation may run out or need to be cut.

Those who have managed to keep their jobs: Will need to be taxed higher to help those who have lost their jobs and to make up for lost tax revenue.

If you do not fit into any of these categories of people, an Obama administration may be right for you. I would love to meet you.

• Oct. 24, 2008 - American Girl Birthday

Posted By MarlaMom
I'm preparing for a birthday party for my oldest dd who turned 10 last month, but with school, etc. going on, I decided to postpone it for a month. She wanted an American Girl theme so that's what we're doing. Most of her friends plan to dress up and bring their dolls and I'm still in the process of finalizing games, crafts, and organizing my house a bit more.

I know I won't get everything done that I want to and I pray that I will be able to focus on the guests and my children and not the clutter lurking behind closed doors. I'm tempted to haul my homeschool bookshelf and drawers out of the hallway, but I won't. Most of the kids/moms coming are homeschooler families. Why should I care? I'll just straighten it and move on.

Now, on to making mini pumpkin pies and other baked goods.

• Oct. 22, 2008 - Don't Let The Title Deceive You

Posted By the luthers life

WHY I AM VOTING DEMOCRAT

I'm voting Democrat because I believe the government will do a better
job of spending the money I earn than I would.

I'm voting Democrat because freedom of speech is fine as long as nobody
is offended by it.

I'm voting Democrat because when we pull out of Iraq I trust that the
bad guys will stop what they're doing because they now think we're good
people.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe that people who can't tell us if
it will rain on Friday CAN tell us that the polar ice caps will melt
away in ten years if I don't start driving a Prius.

I'm voting Democrat because I'm not concerned about the slaughter of
millions of babies so long as we keep all death row inmates alive.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe that business should not be
allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give
the rest away to the government for redistribution as THEY see fit.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe liberal judges need to rewrite the
Constitution every few days to suit some fringe kooks who would NEVER
get their agendas past the voters.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe that open borders and government
give-a-ways to foreigners is a great way to grow a nation.

I'm voting Democrat because I'm way too irresponsible to own a gun, and
I know that my local police are all I need to protect me from murderers
and thieves.

I'm voting Democrat because I love the fact that I can now marry
whatever I want. I've decided to marry my horse.

I'm voting Democrat because I believe oil companies' profits of 4% on a
gallon of gas are obscene but the government taxing the same gallon of
gas at 15% isn't.

• Oct. 7, 2008 - The Marks of A True Conservative

Posted By the luthers life

When listening to the media, I here the right (conservatives) constantly vilified. It seems that conservatives are so out of touch with America. Conservatives make up about 35 percent of the voting population. This is the largest block of voters in the United States. So why are we so out of touch. Here is a list that for our family, defines a conservative, keeping in mind some differences and that not all Conservatives are Christians.

1. God has ultimate control

2. All human life is valuable and should be protected from death and harm. From the the first cell to the last breath.

3. Punish the wicked, including the death penalty and harsh consequences for wrong actions.

4. Marriage is between one man and one woman. There are no substitutes, as they mock God's design

5.It take a family to raise a child. All areas of child rearing should be left to the parents.

6.Personal Responsibility. We all need to be personally responsible for our own action expecting absolutely no one to "Bail us out"

7. United States Citizenship is not cheap. If you choose to come here you need to first be invited and be legally in our country.

8. Promote charitable contributions to private organizations and volunteerism.

9. Promote healthy behavior and discourage unhealthy behavior.

10. Do not create more programs that require less responsibility from the citizens. Do not promote a sense of entitlement.

11. Low taxes. Taxing only enough to fund what is neccesary to run a small government.

12. Spend only what you make. Start using household economics.

13. Protect America at all cost. Take military action when neccessary but do not interefere with other countries unless the U.S is at risk.

14. Take care of our war veterans who have proudly served in active duty.

15. Serves their country with honesty and honor.

16 Respects politicians who Considers themselves a public service.

17. Will appoint strict constructionists to the Supreme court.

18. Believes Government is not the solution but rather the problem. Freedom first!!!!!

19. The love of this great country and the belief that it's system can never be recreated.

20. The right to bear arms. To protect one's family.

This is a list of what we vote on. How out of touch is this? Yes, I know we never find all of them in a cannidate and sometimes find very few. This election is no exception as our choices seem awful but  have what we have. So to ask the question. Would the real conservative please stand up? The fight for this great land is on!
