Just A Closer Walk With Thee
Posted at 5:14 AM on Oct. 12, 2008
Don’t we all just need a closer walk with Him? I know I do. I’ve been so busy with this week I haven’t really taken the time to study my Bible as I usually do, and I can tell. I’m angry with people - People label me all sorts of things, talk about me behind my back, and I get nasty, condemning emails. I wish people would see me as I am, not as they see me once they’re offended from what they read because it might’ve hit home. I’m weighed down spiritually.I’m agitated. I’m tired, especially of taking Wilbur out to eat every four hours. I feel like my work is never ending. I need a closer walk with Him because I am weak but He is strong! I love singing this song.
Just A Closer Walk With Thee
I am weak, but Thou art strong;
Jesus, keep me from all wrong;
I’ll be satisfied as long
As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.
Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.
Through this world of toil and snares,
If I falter, Lord, who cares?
Who with me my burden shares?
None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee.
Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.
When my feeble life is o’er,
Time for me will be no more;
Guide me gently, safely o’er
To Thy kingdom shore, to Thy shore.
Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.
Just a closer walk! Amen! All for Him until I go safely home!
Blessings!

I forget where we found this activity, I think it was a book on Colonial America. Making butter is a wonderful family activity. Just make sure you have plenty of willing shakers or you may have to spend the last five minutes wishing you had never started this.
We never mastered the straining portion. Our directions told us to squeeze the lump of butter in a cheesecloth so that the buttermilk drips out. I'm guessing they meant a finer cheesecloth than what I found at the supermarket. Mine resembled Swiss. I think someone confused the cheesecloth packaging with the gauze bandage packaging. The butter tasted good. Don't forget to remove the marbles.

Never underestimate the educational power of dressing up as a knight, building castles out of blocks, or making illuminations. Learning is multi-dimensional.

Posted at 5:13 PM on Oct. 9, 2008
This year I am a senior, and I was excited to see the 2009 homeschool seniors shirts from Homeschool Boutique. Of course the Boutique is always adding new products so I would encourage you to visit their site often!
The ‘09 senior shirts, right now, only come in white, but they will be available in hot pink and cardinal red within a week or so.

The Homeschool Boutique donated a shirt to giveaway so if you’d like to enter to win one just blog about it on your site and leave me the link here. This is open to seniors and parents of seniors, though if you know of a friend who is a senior you’re welcome to enter too - just give me their name.
If you are a senior and haven’t heard of the Homeschool Senior site, please go check it out. You can join in with the graduating class of ‘09 if you like!
Blessings!

Fall Favourites
Posted at 4:18 PM on Oct. 8, 2008
Felecia at Flower In The Rain tagged me with listing my fall favourites, and since I haven’t done any tags in awhile I thought I’d give this a go ’round. Now, I love fall, especially here in Indiana where you can watch the trees turn to beautiful colours of red, orange, maroon, yellow, and brown. However, I do NOT like the freezing cold weather that slowly moves in! Eeeek! I wouldn’t mind if it didn’t get lower than 40….but here are my favourite fall things.
1. Favorite Smell? fading leaves as the wind blows more than usual
2. Favorite Food? pumpkin pie or bread
3. Favorite Color? burnt orange
4. Favorite Drink? hot tea with honey and creamer
5. Favorite Treat? egg-nog
6. Favorite Place to go? walking through the harvested fields back the woods
7. Favorite Candy? I don’t care for candy
8. Favorite Movie to watch? Little Women
9. Favorite Clothing to wear? my 6yr old blue hoodie that used to be Danielle’s sister’s… years ago.
10. Favorite Outdoor Activity? walking
11. Favorite Football Team? Uh none
12. Favorite Fall Holiday? Jesus’ birth (he was actually born in Setpember, not December)
13. Favorite Haunted place? you know haunted means “frequently visited”? I’d say the woods or the fields.
14. Favorite Food at Thanksgiving Dinner? greenbean casserole and turkey
15. Favorite Pie? pumpkin
16. Favorite Fall Hobby? looking at all the pumpkins or finding interesting leaves
17. Favorite Fall Memory? when Amanda, Rachel, Eric, Hannah, Mother Dear, and I went down the hill, made a leaf pile, and all played in it.
18. Favorite Fall Sight? the trees far off that look like a painted-masterpiece…. oh wait they are.
19. Overall Favorite thing about Fall? the colours
20. Overall Favorite Season? summer changing into fall
I guess I’m suppose to tag someone, but instead I shall put a linky on and if you post your fall favourites you can link it.
I do wanna know one of your fall favourites though!

In Memoriam- Ramón
Posted at 12:44 PM on Oct. 8, 2008
My dad has five brothers. I knew four of them as Tío Cheo, Tío Sami, Tío German, and Tío Heri. But only one was ever simply called Tío. That was Ramón. For the longest time, I thought his name was actually Tío, and I remember my surprise when I learned that Tío was also the Spanish word for uncle! Tío always greeted me with a "¿Como 'stas? Dame un besito." Give me a little kiss. Always sharply dressed, a smile spread across his face, there was no way you could refuse.
Tío was technically my father's uncle. My grandmother raised him with her own children after their parents died. She was very much his mother. And he was very much a big brother to my father. My Tío.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, I will be at Tío's funeral. I don't know if it has sunk in yet that I won't see him anymore. He's kind of like a Cheshire Cat. His smile lingers on. I can see it in the faces of my family.

A Simple Woman’s Daybook: Week 9
Posted at 3:49 AM on Oct. 7, 2008
Grandma Starr got here last Friday, and we spent the previous days cleaning up the schoolhouse for her and then after she got here we spent Friday and Saturday unloading the moving truck. It’s been fun having her here, especially not having to get to the “end” when she would usually leave after only a few days! Right now Amanda is helping her set up the network card in her computer so she can be online and update her blog!
I have a lot to get done today and hope that I will be able to accomplish it all. PLease enjoy my daybook (you can find the original daybook at Peggy’s blog)!

For Today…October 6th, 2008 at 12: 06pm
Outside my Window…grass that I wish was fenced in so the I could let the goats out.
I am thinking…of how Christ continually forgives us and how much I need to learn to be forgiving.
From the learning rooms…more on the wordpress front. Thanks for your help, Joe.
I am thankful for…Christ’s grace and love. For a dirty house when I’m mad.
From the kitchen…Rachel making lunch (beans, rice, and tortillas!!!)
I am wearing…blue shirt, skirt, barefoot, and my green robe.
I am reading…Psalms 50-57 “Create in me a clean heart, oh God.”
I am hoping…Wilbur will get better soon! To buy the shirts at TSC that I found. The ladies at GGM will be able to put up their weeklies. *grin*
I am creating…a template, a list of things that need to be done to the barn for winter, another list for everyone to follow to get the house CLEAN.
I am hearing… my playlist
Around the house…DIRT!
One of my favorite things…accomplishing things and creating designs of any sort
I am praying for…wisdom on my part for certain issues
A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week…to make the cracker recipe out of the Seasons At Home magazine. Complete the Blessed Girlhood article for next GGM Issue. Email companies for the GGM Ads, finish Page’s template, homeschool memoirs, and The Homesteading Carnival
I accomplished since last week…a lot, but nothing on my list.
Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you...

Our yard taken from the upstairs window. The sidewalk there leads up to the front porch. You can see behind the barn the railroad tracks (across) where our neighbor lives. The bean fields off to the right. You can also see plenty of toys and chickens! Click for large view.
I cannot put a Mr.Linky on anymore so please leave your daybook link in a comment so I can find it and visit you from there!
Blessings!

I am going to be completely honest now. If I can't get into a book I've chosen for my children's subjects, I'm less inclined to use it. Which means they are less inclined to study that particular subject. I like to find material that teach basic subjects in unique ways. Like Nitty Gritty Grammar and Laugh 'n' Learn Spanish, which both teach using comic strip examples. Or the Pop Culture and Philosophy series that uses Star Wars, Harry Potter, Narnia, etc. to explain the concepts of different philosophical teachings. My latest addition is the Life of Fred series (hat tip to Vicki) which offers a new way of looking at higher math concepts. My theory is that if it is interesting, they will learn more and search out more information on their own.

A sad portion of my past.
Posted at 6:00 AM on Oct. 6, 2008
Recently, I have been remembering some things of when I was a very small girl. I lived in a different house than I do now; where I lived all those years ago was actually a neighborhood, with a cul-de-sac and everything! (We lived there for six years.)
We were very popular with the neighborhood kids; they would come over and frost cookies with us, and once, we had them be a part of our answering machine message! Our best friend was Travis, who lived across the street from us, and we had so much fun with him; we probably played with him every day!
But there was one girl who I will always remember, and burn with guilt. I don’t even remember her name, or what she looked like really, but I will never forget our actions toward her.
She wanted so badly to be our friend, and no matter how mean we were to her, she never gave up. I think the reason we turned her down was because she was different, because she wasn’t as good-looking as we thought she should be. I am sickened and sorrowed by our cruelty. We would insult her, then laugh when she ran home crying. I won't go into further detail, in case I start crying, but you get the picture.
This has been weighing on my mind for some time, and comments are welcome. Now I guess you know the worst side of me, and my biggest regret.
