Grading, to do or not to do, is the question

Here we are another week has gone by, and I am exhausted! In the past 2 weeks,  I have learned more grammar rules for 2nd and 3rd grade than should be allowed!  I went through Abeka for Jr/Sr high, but WOW, Abeka rules start early!!!
My children are new to this whole grading system.  I normally went over their work, and on tough areas worked with them.  I am grading their work now (2nd/3rd grade 6/8 respectively), and I don't know if I completely agree with it.  My daughter made her first C, a 77 on a grammar test; and my son made his first B on a handwriting test.  They fell apart today.  I had to console them and let them know that the grades don't matter, but them learning how to do it is the most important thing to me.  That helped a bit, but, I am not convinced.  I don't want to give them grades that they didn't earn, because that is lying.  I don't want to not give them grades at all, because I want them to see where they need to concentrate.
ANY advice would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Hi! I don't really have any advice. I was just reading random blogs and came across yours. We don't grade, but I do check their work and have them correct their mistakes. Occassionally, I will give them a check +, or A, or 100% if they've earned it. It's more important to me that they understand the concept. And I don't need to keep grades for our state.

By the way, I am in Texas. We live in a small town north of Austin. Did I catch that you are from Kyle? And, small world, I went to Texas A&M, Ph.D., Psychology 1992.

Anyway, you've been tagged. Check my blog for the "rules". Hope you enjoy.

Grades

I agree with Joyful Momma...grades are so artificial in the sense that kids equate being good at something with the corresponding grades. I used to teach 2nd grade at a private school and some kids, even by this age, would fall apart if they missed 1 on a spelling test. They would beg for me to give them an A on the paper. I thought this was so sad. I would spend all year with some kids trying to overcome their perception that "they weren't good at math". What? You're 8 years old!! So, anyway, I don't like grades and do my best to get away from them. By the way, when I was in college the grade I was the most proud of was a B+ I got in a Sociology class. I know that I put more time and effort into that grade than any A I ever received.
