The Perfect Summer

Emily thoroughly enjoys her dessert.

Tomorrow is the first day of the new school year for us.  We have had a great summer.  If I could use this summer as the template for all future summers, I think I would.

Our summer started as it always does, preparing for Brendan's birthday.  Brendan had a great "exploding" party with lots of science experiments that popped, banged, boomed, and just flat exploded.

The week after Brendan's party, the kids attended a fantastic VBS and they all had a great time.

The following week we headed to my parents house for the 4th of July celebration in their little town.  They have a wonderful fireworks show every year and the sense of community you get as the entire town gathers on the grass of the high school football field just can't be duplicated at big city shows.

We then had one week at home before it was time for the kids to go back to grandma and grandpa's for two weeks of swimming lessons and every kind of over-indulgence known to kiddom.

When the kids returned home, we joined the health club to gain access to the swimming pool.  The month of August was spent making daily trips to the pool and I was able to squeeze in a workout on several occasions.

For the last big hurrah of the summer, Alyssa was invited to a birthday party at the local water park.  John took the boys along and they all enjoyed their first experience with water rides of all kinds.

The final weekend of August I attended a ladies' conference with some friends.  It was wonderful.  What a great time to refresh, renew and 'recharge my batteries' for the year ahead (no, I am not a robot).

Today was the perfect end to the perfect summer.  The kids all had neighborhood kids over to play for the first time in months.  Most of the families here are two income which means their children are busy in summer programs all summer.  When I was young, we spent our summers going back and forth between friends' houses but now it is difficult to find time just to have kids over to play.

Tomorrow we kick off our fall season.  We not only start school but we have our Awana meeting tomorrow night in preparation for the start of club next week.  Saturday will be the first soccer games of the season.  With three kids in soccer and games spread out all over town each week, this should prove to be an interesting exercise in testing the limits of the time/space continuum.  In a few weeks Brownies will start and our frantic fall schedule will be complete.

All good things must come to an end and this summer is certainly one of them.  I will remember it fondly.

My Blog

A few years ago, when our oldest was 4 and her two brothers were both in diapers, my in-laws were a few days into a visit from their home 3000 miles away when my father-in-law noticed that the rug under the dining room table was in serious need of vacuuming. He is not prone to domestic duties (his wife is a great housekeeper) but seeing the need, he decided to try his hand with the Hoover. As soon as 'Grandpa' declared his intention to get out the vacuum, four little feet ran for the toy box to get vacuums of their own. We had one toy vacuum and we improvised a second from a 'popper' push toy. The baby, who was not yet walking, was right in the thick of things on all fours, never one to be left out. Grandpa, trying to maneuver the self-propelled 'Wind-tunnel' around the 10 foot rug while avoiding the table legs and dodging his three little helpers, remarked in exasperation, "I just wanted to clean the rug, I wasn't looking to start a three ring circus." Welcome to my life!

About Me

My name is Tiffany. I am a 40 year old mother of 4. My husband, John, and I planned to homeschool even before we married 18 years ago but it would be several years before our oldest would be ready to start on this journey. We had our children in alphabetical order, quite by accident at first, but once we got started, we figured we had to keep it going. They are Alyssa 10, Brendan 9, Chase 6, and Emily 4. Our 4th baby, D, miscarried at 13 weeks. We have no intention of making it to Z.
