Well today I have managed to get the place secured for the Bake and Yard Sale. It will take place on Friday, October the 12th in Dexter, Missouri. My mother has graciousley offered to let us hold the sale at her house. Several people have offered to donate items to us to sell as well. Plans are underway for the Fall Harvest Social. One of the moms is planning on setting up a Hay Maze if each of us will pitch in with a couple hay bales. She also told us that she has a Drink Fountain and will be making some Orange Punch with Bats in it. So that will be a sight to see, she has offered to take pictures for us and give each of us prints from them. We of course will be posting those here for all to see. |

Well its been a while since Ive updated this blog. Things have been a whirlwind around my house lately.lol Ive started a Homeschool Group in my area and it has been going really well. You can read about it at the website. I had already named the website ABC Homeschool Academy as I had intended on making that our family website, however, I decided to turn it into the Groups Website. The name of the group is Bootheel Area Homeschoolers. We also have a group Myspace page. |

Well, August has finally arrived. Just got back from a trip to the Library with my daughter and we went to Sonic and got something to eat and drove out through the park and stopped under a shade tree to eat. It sure is hot here. The leaves on some of the trees are already dying and coloring and falling to the ground. It wont be long until cool weather begins to set in. We have wanted to go camping so bad this year but it has just been too hot and with my husband and my health problems we knew we wouldnt be able to tolerate the heat. So we have decided to delay our camping adventures until September and October when the weather cools down some. Then we can take a hike and enjoy the beauty of nature. I think I have gotten all my youngest sons materials ordered for the year. In the past we have just ordered the Paces or Lifepacs by the month, which would leave us short some months because they would finish earlier. However this year i took the plunge and ordered everything for the year at once. I thank God I was able to do so too. I am currently trying to plan units for our unit studies this year, so we can add a little lapbooking and notebooking along as we go. I started a Scrapbook type folder for my son Matt. Wrote a letter to him since he is starting high school this year, will share it in another post soon. While at the Library we picked up his 4th Harry Potter book, he has read 3 in the space of 2 weeks so he was ready for the 4th one. I will be doing a unit on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in October, I have already ordered the book I need to complete the study and we will put together a Lapbook on a Mini Unit of Owls. We went to a Conservation Display last year on a Camping Trip and the Show was on Owls and we learned how to call the owls to come down and sit on our arms, we also learned to call them late in the evening or early of a morning. We learned quite a lot about the Barred Owl here in Missouri. There are some conservation shows coming up on Bats and I want my son to be able to go to that if they have any slots open, they will be learning how to make Bat Houses. We plan on doing a bat unit and visiting some nearby caves. I got a couple books for myself at the Library one is on Grimms Fairy Tales and the other is on Music Appreciation. I want to incorporate that into my sons studies. I am looking to maybe choose some composers and musical periods for him to complete some studies on as well. Hoping to come up with a lot more studies in the future. Well that is it for now, take care and Happy Blogging and Schooling also! |

Well I think I have finally gotten my sons curriculum planned for this year. I have thought and re-thought until I finally came up with a plan and have ordered most of it, whats more I was able to find most of it used for really great prices through the Veg Source swap boards. Here is what I have planned for him this year:
So, scratch my previous plan, thankfully this is it. We are going to add various topical themed units along as well, and he can work on lapbooking and notebooking as an Art Medium. Im hoping to get him enrolled in some Martial Arts he has always wanted to do this, Im assuming they will let Teenage guys do this sort of thing?lol Until next time... |

Wow does it ever seem that there just keeps getting to be more and more choices for curriculum nowadays? Ive chosen what I want to use with my son this year and am now trying to get down a list on paper of unit studies that I would like to use this year. So far I dont have much.lol Here is what I have chosen thus far:
I will probably try and implement some of the above list, not all as time permits, I might add some mini-units to be completed in one afternoon for special days such as Johnny Appleseeds Birthday or Hot Dog Day, just make a lap book on those days.

Post these rules before you post your eight things. Give eight random facts about yourself. People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things and post these rules. At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog. 1. Ive been married almost 20 years to the same man, first marriage for the both of us too and hopefully the last. We will be renewing our wedding vows this October in an Outdoor Ceremony. 2. We have homeschooled since 1998 when our youngest started Kindergarten. 3. I am a ministers daughter, raised Pentecostal. My husband and I are former Childrens Pastors and Sunday School Teachers of Youth. 4.I have two special needs kids, ages 17 and 16. 5. I like Fried Chicken, good country cooking. My favorite cook has to be Paula Deen because I can sympathize with her style. I love Southern Cooking. Love to cook for my family and church family and fellowship. 6.I have several health problems, too many to list really. 7. My husband and I are getting ready to move out into the country and begin our own homestead within the next few months. We have been looking around for the perfect place, we plan to move in the Spring of 2008. Thanks to a blessing from the Lord around that time our Home will be completely paid for which is something we have worked for and wanted for years. We also will get a new vehicle, Lord knows we need one, our little 4 cylinder Nissan has about seen its last days, and with 3 Teenagers, it gets cramped a lot! LOL 8. I love Cats, Cats and more Cats. We have Maine Coon Cats. I have a Maine Coon tabby cat named Ricky Racoon and she is expecting her first litter, the father is not a Maine Coon however, just a stray. We also have Rickys last baby that was born this spring, she had 4 and only one survived, he is named "Hey Bud!" (the kids coined that phrase and it stuck! lol) We have Rickys Mother, a White Maine Coon who we call "Momma" she lives outdoors. There are 4 solid black strays that meander through our yard from time to time. We have several stray cats that call this home. (Wouldnt be because I put out food and water for them and every Racoon and Possum in the neighborhood now would it? ) LOL Will have to find some people to tag and will post them as soon as I do! |

What to choose? Seems there are so many alternatives out there when it comes to this topic. My kids are all in high school and we have never done anything like this before but I would like to make something. I am leaning more towards making scrapbook pages per unit vs the lapbooking because I dont think there would be an easy way to store those right now until we get in our new home next year. We are buying a big home out in the country with lots more storage space and we are currently in a mobile home ,so as you can see we are cramped for space. Anyway, in planning for this year, I have joined several homeschool groups and lapbooking and notebooking groups to get some ideas, most of what I have found is geared towards Elementary Students. Say for example I would like to do a Harry Potter Unit in October and I am having all kinds of trouble finding layouts online. All I can find is articles on the very controversial subject between homeschooler as to whether to allow their children to learn from J.K Rowlings books. In the past I have felt the same way, as far as being against them. However this year I decided to just pick up one and look at it and I found many educational opportunities within it. So far my son has read the first one and is now currently reading the second one. We want to use them this fall. If anyone knows of any Free Unit Studys for them or things I can use to compile a scrapbook layout with them I would appreciate it. I am familiar with basic scrapbooking, have made one in the past, this is my daughters Senior Year and I want to make her a memory book about it. Would love some suggestions for that as well. That is all I have for this post, take care and happy learning! Gwen |

Welcome to my Homeschool Blog. I am currently working toward planning my school year over the Summer. My youngest will be entering the 9th grade this fall. It is so hard to believe that he is that old already! We have homeschooled since 1998 when my youngest entered kindergarten. We use a variety of curriculum in our homeschool. This year I plan on using some online Unit Studies and Webquests as well as some online Video Programs that I have found. We will also use a few BJUP texts. My daughter is 17 and this will be her Senior year. Its hard to believe she will graduate this year! My husband and I are currently forming a Homeschool Group for those in the Bootheel Area of Southeast Missouri. If you would like some information on our group and planned activities please visit our group website. This is the plan I have for my 9th grader this year so far:
To date this is what we are looking at. We know that in addition to this we want to incoporate some of his favorite writers/authors. So we have decided to dedicate the month of October to R.L Stine and the Goosebumps Books and the last half of the month will be J.K Rowling and the Harry Potter Fame. We will culminate with a Harry Potter Halloween Party. I will be putting more on here about these planned activities soon. So far that schedule looks like: Week 1 of October- Unit on Bats, field trip to local cave and tour with Missouri Department of Conservationist. Workshop on building a Bat house. Week 2- R.L Stines birthday is this week so we will be covering a Goosebumps theme. Week 3-4 Harry Potter and the Sorcerors Stone Unit Study and another Harry Potter book of his choosing, will incorporate the study of Owls and Castles, Ghosts, Medieval Era...etc, things related to the Harry Potter books. My kids are too old to participate in Trick or Treating this year so we will hold a Harry Potter Party and let the kids pass out candy that night to the Trick or Treaters. They still get the fun of dressing up and all that and can enjoy the end of the theme unit in a neat manner. Well until next time Gwen |

Well Ive been tagged so lets play along (hope Im doing this right too) Here are the rules:
