A Family Guide to the Bible by Christin Ditchfield....Book Review

    Posted in Book reviews

    Family Guide to the Bible

Get to know your way around the Scripture wtih this family-friendly tour through the Bible.

I have to start out by saying...I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!! :) I think all families should have a copy of this book in their library. It's wonderful!!!

Christine Ditchfield starts the book out by writing about the history of the Bible. Where did it come from? She then proceeds to answer the question of how can we trust the Bible...that it is the word of God.  Then she moves to the question of what it's all about.

Then she gets to the meat of this book. Each and every one of the sixty-six books of the Bible is given a synopsis.

This is how each chapter is broken down:

The Book (the name of the Bible book)
The Author (who authored this book of the Bible)
The Audience (who is this book directed towards)
The Setting (where in the world is this located and what time)
The Story (a short overview of the book)
The Message ( a brief synopsis of the entire book, with chapter and verse references)

The key verse for the book

More on this story in the Bible. This is wonderful...if you are researching a particular subject, person or time, you can find more references in this section.

A short words to know section identifies the most significant words contained in this Book.

The Did You Know section is the best! Some little snippet about each Book is included. Then the Making The Connection section gies you some background as to what is going on during this Book's writing.

I can't say enough good things about this book. It's engaging, informative and easy to read. I can see this one being in our family library for many years to come. I'm so thankful I had the opportunity to review such a fine book. And I thank Crossway Publishers for publishing it!

What He Must Be....If He Wants to Marry My Daughter (book review)

    Posted in Book reviews

    What will you say...

when that certain young man sits down in your living room, sweaty-palmed and tongue-tied, and asks permission to marry your daughter? What criteria should he meet before the two of them join together for life?

Fortunately, God has given us a clear picture of the role of the husband/father in the home, and in What He Must Be..If He Wants to Marry My Daughter Voddie Baucham breaks this picture down into ten desirable qualities. Not only should parents of young women seek these qualities in a son-in-law, but parents of young men should strive to cultivate these qualities in their sons.

Baucham, one of the architects of the Family Integrated Church movement, follows up on his popular book Family Driven Faith with this compelling, down-to-earth apologetic of biblical manhood.

And so this is where I began reading this book.

At first, I will admit, I expected this holier than thou attitude that is seen so many times in Christian circles. This unattainable goal for the absolutely perfectly raised man to perfectly court my daughters to marry them perfectly and then go on to have a perfect life together. I was most pleasantly surprised that this is not the theme of this book!

Many of the ten qualities the author lists in this book are thought-provoking and insightful. Things that I might not have thought of going into such an important decision. As we tell our children, after the decision to accept Christ as your personal savior, the decision of who you marry will have the greatest impact on the rest of your life.

I liked how he started out telling about a multigenerational vision. He gives examples and personal stories about being raised in a father-less home. Did you know that 70% of the hardened criminals in prison today have no father in the their life? 70%! That fact was astounding to me!

This book is appropriate for ALL readers. Now that I have finished it, my husband will be next, after him will come our oldest daughter. It would be a good read for young men as well as young women. It shows what a young man should strive to become as well as what young women should strive to find in her husband.

Like all books, there are some things I don't necessarily completely agree with, but unlike many books, this one doesn't have alot of "bones" to spit out...it's mostly meat.

I would highly recommend this book. And I would recommend parents read it long before their children are of marrying age. I would also recommend that both parents read it, then their children...and then discuss it as a family. That way, the entire family is "on the same page" so to speak on such an incredibly important facet of life.

What Does The Bible Say About That book review

    Posted in Book reviews

    [What+Does+the+Bible+Say+About+That+CP.jpg]

What Does the Bible Say About That? By Carolyn Larsen, Illustrated by Rick Incrocci, Crossway Books, 2009, 352 Pages, Ages 8-12, ISBN-13: 9781433502132, $15.99

When I saw this book in the box from Crossway, I thought it would be a fun book to read over and then read with my children.

I must admit this is a hard review for me to write....because I am not a negative person. But, this book was really hard for me to read through. I just didn't enjoy it. I also didn't feel all that interested in having my children read it.

Sure, it has cute cartoons and is written on a child's level,  but it lacked something for me. It just didn't draw me in. It felt too superficial. Perhaps because we homeschool and discuss things all the time, I felt it didn't go deep enough into God's Word. I also didn't care for the way God was capitalized, but not references to God...when He is used in referring to God, it is not capitalized. Minor to some, but major to me.

It just seemed too light and airy for me. Yes, it's a children's book...but why do we have to assume that children are superficial?

I did like the "Today I will" section...it seemed to really encourage children to take things to heart. The verses used were well matched to the topic.

Perhaps I'm being too critical,  but this book is not on my recommended reading list....

Treasuring God in our Traditions book review

    Posted in Book reviews

I have so enjoyed reading Noel Piper's book, Treasuring God in our Traditions. It's a short read, but sure held my interest from beginning to end.

We all have traditions...whether they are planned or not. Some are good, some are bad. Some just are.... We have many traditions in our family. We want to have certain things that remind us of special times, or of our family. They remind us of our past and ground us as we press on toward our future.

Traditions of my childhood are very fond memories for me. All it takes is seeing something that reminds me of one of our special traditions to take me back to my childhood. I pray that my own children will remember our traditions with love..and remember the time we spent making that memory.

The words simply flow as Piper details how traditions are not just for the children. They are also for the parents to remind them of what is important as they lead their family from day to day. From holiday celebrations to every day events, we are teaching children about where they came from and what we hope for in the future. The "rat race" of day to day life can rob a family of time together....meaningful time. Piper gently encourages us to be purposeful in our traditions.

This book is filled with ideas, real life examples, scriptures and recipes. I'd heartily recommend this book. Take the time to read it and implement some of the ideas. You, too, can have a strong sense of tradition in your family.  I so enjoyed the opportunity to review this book!

    Keeping Holiday book review

    Posted in Book reviews

I've had the pleasure of reading Keeping Holiday by Starr Meade for a book review. The Crossway Book review program is sure a great thing!!

Let me start by saying this is not a book I would have chosen to read on my own. I normally gravitate to books on how to do something, not just entertainment. However, I am so thankful to have been given this opportunity, because I have LOVED reading this book!!!

It's an engaging, easy read...very captivating from the beginning. This is important to me...as I said I don't read alot for entertainment, so if it doesn't capture my interest quickly, I don't usually finish the book. This one did capture me and i finished it in two days time.

If you are a fan of CS Lewis, you will enjoy this book. My favorite line from Keeping Holiday is "You don't find the Founder; he finds you. He's not just the Founder; he's the Finder, too."

I heartily recommend this book....to read for yourself as well as to read to your children!!!!

Hymns For A Child's Heart, book review

    Posted in Book reviews

I was given the privilege of receiving a most wonderful book to review.
Hymns For A Child's Heart is truly worthy of the description wonderful!

This book was written by Bobbie Wolgemuth and Joni Eareckson Tada. There are personal from the authors, tying together the hymn and a real life tale. But, the most interesting stories in this gem are those of the hymn writers. How very interesting to learn the inspiration behind such moving hymns as O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing, America, The Beautiful, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, and my personal favorite, Amazing Grace.

The story entitled, The Brave Caroler, tells the story of Martin Luther. I think this one spoke to me especially in light of today's current events. In Germany long ago, the people could not get a Bible in their own language and had to depend upon others to tell them what it said. Some were not truthful and told lies of what the Bible said. Martin saw to it that his fellow believers could have Bibles and hymnbooks that they could read. When the dishonest people took them away, he and other believers printed more! We don't know what the future holds for our country, but to have this example is truly a blessing.

The most touching personal story I read was from Joni, titled The Right Foundation. Such a truth!!

There are pages in the back for personal notes. How thoughtful to put those there....while reading this book to your own family, you could record special thoughts about your favorite hymns, their authors or your personal stories. What a gift for future generations.

A really neat part of this book is the section titled, Do You Know What It Means? Throughout the book, there are crosses next to some words that may not be easily understood. Words like dross, noblest mirth and tumult. Do you know what they mean?! If you read this section, you would know that dross is the scum on the surface of metal, noblest mirth is splendid joy, and tumult is loud, angry weather!

The accompanying cd is soothing, inspiring and uplifting. I can see this one being used as a lullaby cd in the nursery, one to listen to when working around the home, or just as a family to hear the words of these truly remarkable hymns we have been blessed with from generations ago.

The book jacket says it's for ages 3-15. I will say that this adult (long since past the age of 15!) sure learned alot and enjoyed this book and cd immensely!

Homespun Holidays, Fall and Winter book review

    Posted in Book reviews

I love all things fall and winter...so when the opportunity came to have a chance at reviewing The Old Schoolhouse store's new book, Homespun Holidays, Fall and Winter,  I jumped at it and sent my name in. How happy was I when I received an e-mail with the link to the e-book to review it!

Let me start out by saying the cover alone makes me long for fall and winter! This book is filled with recipes, crafts, and how to's. But, it's oh so much more than that! It's also sprinkled just so with personal stories. Where the recipes or special celebrations originated. It gives such a personal feel to it. It feels as if you're talking with a friend.

My favorite ideas were the Shepherd's supper and the Thanksgiving Bulletin Board. Oooh! And I can see new outside decorations in our next celebration with the Candy Land instructions!

The recipe for Mountain Cookies has my mouth watering...can't wait till it cools off and we can bake up a batch!

I especially loved that all of the recipes are in printable form at the end of the book. This makes it so easy to thumb through just the recipes to find the one in particular you'd like to try.

I give this book a huge thumbs up! I'm so thankful for the opportunity to review this book...and you should most definitely get your own copy! I'm ready for the holidays NOW!!!
