Scrolls and Pottery Jar

We made these pottery jars from cornstarch, flour and water and salt. They hardened without baking. We made scrolls on grocery bags.

Easter Sunday

Happy Easter! Gosh we've been busy this week. I was wanting to do more study on Easter and the difference between the Easter bunny and the Ressurrection. With dd being in horse camp all week and lots of church activities we've done only short studies at night. I know they know the difference I just wanted to make sure.

Dd had to get in front of the church with some of the other kids to do the Bible Church drill. She was very nervous, but did very well. Then on Sunday she had GA recognition and had to get in front of the church to get her patches on her sash.

We're doing a study on Tom Sawyer and hopefully will finish by the end of the month before we attend the play. Since I never read it as a child, I'm enjoying it probably more than the kids.

Making butter

We were learning how the pioneers make things including butter. Since we don't have a cow, we used heavy whipping cream and put it in a quart jar and put some muscle into shaking it!

Snow Days

Boy do we have cabin fever! We've had 3 days of being stuck in an ice covered world. Thank goodness we kept power. There were many who have been out for several days. Although this is nothing compared to last years ice storm when we were out of power for 14 days. We couldn't go to homeschool bowling today and we were so bummed!

The kids went to the nursing homes to deliver valentines to the residents with the church GA's. Since their Great-grandmother is temporarily there it was fun for them to visit with her. Happy Valentines Day!

These are pictures from our science club. This is from three different classes on the human body. We looked at actual organs from animals and manequins that the nursing students practice on.

I hope we aren't starting these too early, but last year I started way too late and didn't have tomatoes until September. We started tomatoes and peppers and some herbs. This is the first time we have tried herbs so I don't know what to expect or how to use them yet.

hello from Texas

Isn't a wonder of technology that I can be posting 500 miles from home? We can still check mail and do research while visiting family! It's 30 degrees warmer here than home as well. We will be driving home to 10 degree weather. I think we might stay longer! Well a new year is here and we are still wondering what unit to do. On our local yahoo group some of the moms said to let the kids decide what to learn about as a way to have a fun start. Guess what they decided to learn about? Star Wars. I figured we could learn about planets, stars, hero vs. villian, light speed, etc. Science is not my strongest subject but we'll do our best.

Christmas time is here...

I think Charlie Brown Christmas is my favorite Christmas program. It not only has triumph of the little guy, or tree in this case, but Linus does a wonderful reading of the Christmas story that almost brings me to tears. Plus you have to love Schroder's rendition of Jingle Bells. Well, it's an exctiting time at our house. Trying to keep presents hidden is awfully hard. Especially since the kids are home and there is hardly time to wrap even after they go to sleep.

My son who's 5 wanted to send a letter to Santa this year. It was his first, since he was able to write it himself this year. I inquired the mailman to where this letter would go if we mailed it. He wasn't sure, but we mailed it anyway-keeping a scanned copy for myself of course. Guess what happened. The next day a letter came back for him with a returned address that said North Pole. My eyes bugged out thinking there is a little magic from Santa.

The next day our little neighbor girl saw the letter to my son and immediately ran into her house to write one of her own. She put it in her mailbox with the flag up. I was on my way to the post office to pick up some last minute Christmas stamps for my last minute Christmas cards. I told the little girl that since I was on my way there, I'd just take the letter with me. I inquired at the local (very small town) post office if they were the ones who wrote the returned letter. Her response to me was "It depends, did you like it?". Well of course we did. Yes, she was the one who wrote it. I said the little neighbor girl was so excited that she wrote on of her own and if it was ok to write her back too. She said she would and she would get it in the mail tomorrow.

I got a call from her mother the next day. She was speechless. She had gone out to her mailbox the night before thinking to sneak the letter back in and write one of her own, but it wasn't there. When she checked the mail the next day there was a letter from Santa. Boy was she surprised. The little girl told her that I had taken the letter to the post office for her and she wanted to call and thank me for what I had done. Boy just a little Christmas spirit just made my year wonderful.

Merry Christmas everyone.

First Entry

Well, this is my first entry. My husband thought it would be a good idea to write of our homeschool journey. What works, what doesn't. We are currently using a computer curriculum with our dd 5th grader and some workbook pages with our ds kindergartner. I have felt lately that having the curriculum on the computer is distancing her from us. We send her to her room where the computer is and I feel like I'm sending her to a dungeon! I thought this would be wonderful considering we are starting the kindergartner and would need the extra time. I find that since I don't keep up with reading what she's studing like I should that when she needs help I don't know what she's talking about. I don't think we want to go where there is no structure, but a lot less than what we are doing now. At the same time, I still have the "school" mentality where I'm afraid what she'll be missing if we don't continue with the curriculum.
