Wanting to Make a Difference

Christmas time is here...

I think Charlie Brown Christmas is my favorite Christmas program. It not only has triumph of the little guy, or tree in this case, but Linus does a wonderful reading of the Christmas story that almost brings me to tears. Plus you have to love Schroder's rendition of Jingle Bells. Well, it's an exctiting time at our house. Trying to keep presents hidden is awfully hard. Especially since the kids are home and there is hardly time to wrap even after they go to sleep.

My son who's 5 wanted to send a letter to Santa this year. It was his first, since he was able to write it himself this year. I inquired the mailman to where this letter would go if we mailed it. He wasn't sure, but we mailed it anyway-keeping a scanned copy for myself of course. Guess what happened. The next day a letter came back for him with a returned address that said North Pole. My eyes bugged out thinking there is a little magic from Santa.

The next day our little neighbor girl saw the letter to my son and immediately ran into her house to write one of her own. She put it in her mailbox with the flag up. I was on my way to the post office to pick up some last minute Christmas stamps for my last minute Christmas cards. I told the little girl that since I was on my way there, I'd just take the letter with me. I inquired at the local (very small town) post office if they were the ones who wrote the returned letter. Her response to me was "It depends, did you like it?". Well of course we did. Yes, she was the one who wrote it. I said the little neighbor girl was so excited that she wrote on of her own and if it was ok to write her back too. She said she would and she would get it in the mail tomorrow.

I got a call from her mother the next day. She was speechless. She had gone out to her mailbox the night before thinking to sneak the letter back in and write one of her own, but it wasn't there. When she checked the mail the next day there was a letter from Santa. Boy was she surprised. The little girl told her that I had taken the letter to the post office for her and she wanted to call and thank me for what I had done. Boy just a little Christmas spirit just made my year wonderful.

Merry Christmas everyone.
