From Cabin to Camelot

Apr. 16, 2008 - Delema Of The Day...

When I started out on the the "homeschool journey", I never expected many of the trials that came our way, but like everyother family we rode the waves, up and down through the years and have come along just fine.  Today however, is my first really big delema, one I haven't had to face thus far.  Karl.  Yes, Karl.

Karl is 16 (17 in the summer).  He is a good student and faithful to get his things done.  Lately Karl has been working the business with Dad, earning his spending money and a little to save to boot.  He is a hard worker, never complains and a wonderful example of a "good work ethic" in action.  Why the delema you ask?  Well, if you don't know there are child labor laws in effect in our country.  YES!  I know it is hard to believe but there is!  According to the laws Karl cannot work more than 3 hours a day M-Th, nor can he be near power tools, roofs etc... and other dangerous inplements of destruction.

Yes Moms, he IS only 16 ~ no sawing!  I am laughing here....

During the 10th grade Karl took (and passed) the CA Highschool Exit Exam.  Now... please keep in mind Karl gets all his school work done and keeps up with many other activites in addition to his work.  According to the state he needs a "work permit", or permission from his District of Residence to work.  Which means he must comply with various regulations and what-not, most of which are silly, in my ever so humble opionion  :) .  Okay okay, here is the  delema, should I graduate Karl?  Once graduated, the "delema" is no longer a "delema".  Tech.  Karl will be finishing his Jr year (although as with most HSchoolers), he has all the "required" credits and has passed the Exit Exam.  So ... What to do???

I don't think I would EVER consider this if he wanted or was out in the world working for the "man".  In this case he is working for my "man"!  Hee hee... Has anyone faced this?  Also, I know many families are also doing college classes at home, I would love to hear about this and how it is working for you.

Until Then...

Graduate him! :) No, i'm just saying that as a friend. I really have no idea on the subject of homeschooling/child labor laws and how that all works but I will definetly be praying that God will show you what is best!

I would just check it out to see how it could affect him going to college when he chooses too. Since in thier eyes he may not have reallly graduated. You don't want it to affect him negatively on college acceptance and then scholarship/grant opportunities.

Kathy B from RBR here. :o)

Yep! We've been in your shoes and it is RIDICULOUS! And we wonder why we have so many men in their 20s acting like a bunch of 12 year olds!

Our son started working with his dad at 15. My husband just let him do whatever he wanted him to do and was careful about "getting caught". He worked construction. Of course if there were alot of other guys around his dad would limit his 'task'.

Our son is now 20 and capable of doing almost anything. My husband now works for himself, still doing construction type of work. Our daughters 13 and 17 go with him all the time. They know so much more than I do. We let them do whatever needs to be done, but are cautions if there are other people around. It's very frustrating! But we also view it as we are traing up adults, SKILLED adults!

Graduating him now may be an issue only if you are seeking college and scholarships.

Not sure of that helps you any. :o) Great blog by the way!

~~~~Thanks! Yes, I feel like it just goes to show how "feminized" society is making our boys! Grab a saw ~ Be a man!! Hee Hee....
Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3: 13,14 ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ If the doctrine of Christian union is true, then division and sectarianism are a great and prodigious evil, and therefore ought to be abolished.
