Sep. 25, 2007 - HELP

I am sinking fast.  I am trying to train my 2yr old ds.  This is my third child to train and he is by far the hardest.  So, here it is...he's afraid of the toilet.  We have had some sucesses.  He has gone numerous times and we do reward him with a piece of candy or gum, his absolute favorite.  This is our third week of trying and we don't seem to be any further ahead than when we started.  His pull-up is always wet even when he goes on the potty.  He was born with Polycystic Kidney disease, he only has one functioning kidney.  I don't know if this is a contributing factor in our training dilemma or not.  that is something I have to investigate.  So does anyone has some great tips to help.  We give him books to read, we turn the tv to his favorite shows, we let him play with cars until one fell in.  I'm not going fishing again.  I'm desperate.  Help please!

Have you had any luck yet? If not, he maybe isn't ready yet. Not all children are by 2 and you might need to back off for a short while. Good Luck! :)

You say he is afraid of the toilet, this made me wonder if you've tried using a small potty chair? Sometimes when kids are afraid of the big toilet, they will go in a little kids potty chair, but then what do I know, one of mine was 4 1/2 before he finally stopped have daily "accidents".

I do not know if you got your son potty trained yet, but from my own experience (and from all my friends' experience too) boys take much longer before they are ready.
3 to 4 years old as opposed to girls at 1 1/2 to 2 1/2years.
The Once Upon A Potty movie was helpful. I also dressed them in a shirt and just the underwear and set a timer to go off every hour and we went to the potty every time it rang. This was VERY helpful.
But really TIME was the most helpful. Waiting til they were old enough.
