Oct. 20, 2008 - Celebration Park

Posted in Nature Studies

Sunday was a beautiful fall day...70 degrees and sunny.  After church we decided to head out for a "Sunday drive", only we had a purpose in mind...we weren't just meandering along the country roads.

We had heard about a neat park called Celebration Park about 15-20 minutes from our house.  It is the only archaeological park in Idaho and it is nestled right up against the Snake River.  There are many lava rocks which have petroglyphs carved right into them, made by the Native Americans.  So cool!

Here is a petroglyph.  I wish we had had a guided tour so that we could know what these symbols mean.

Here's another one.  Miss M in the background

Here are the girls inside a hollowed out lava rock.   They got a kick out of spying a few different types of lizards.  Of course they were all too fast so no pictures of them.

We then took a walk along the river to this bridge.  It is the historic Guffey Bridge, originally built in 1897.  It was used to bring ore over from Silver City to Nampa to be smelted.

This is a view of the Snake River from the bridge.  So beautiful!  The mountains in the background are the Owyhee (pronounced o-WHY-hee) Mountains.
