Oct. 23, 2008 - Hope

I have been stirring something around in my brain for the last couple of days that I wanted to share.

Lately, I've been pondering this upcoming election and what might be the outcome.  It seems that with each presidential election, our country is in a frenzy to "make it better", "vote for change", "fix what is broken"...especially from the opposing party of the one who is in the White House.  I, myself, have been in this "make it better with a new President" boat - wanting change, wanting our country to be better - thinking that all of this would happen if we would just elect the right guy!  But, oh, how untrue this is.  Can't we all attest to the many shortcomings and downright failures of our past Presidents?

What I want to say is this...there will never be a President who gives us hope.  Not the hope that we all want.  Its almost like a false hope...one that makes us feel good when we think about the promises made.  When we put our hope in a person, we will always be disappointed.  Maybe not disappointed in the person, but disappointed with how they handled circumstances, how they treated people, what they said, etc, etc.

Now, hear my heart on this -I am not saying that you or I should not vote.  In fact, it is our privilege to do so.  What I AM saying is this...our hope can only be found in one place - in knowing Jesus Christ.   He will never change, His love is unfailing and He will never leave us.  Presidents - Democrat and Republican - will come and go but God is sovereign (supreme) in ALL things.

Psalm 25:5 guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

Psalm 33:18 But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love

Hebrews 7:18-19 The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.

Jesus is our "better hope".  So, while I will cast my vote on election day, I will not lose sight of my true hope and I pray that you won't either.
