Apr. 10, 2008 - New Bird Species!
Well, not quite. The girls and I were so excited to view 2 new bird species that we had not been able to identify before. One has visited us on numerous occasions and for the other one, it was the first time we had seen him around. Since I don't have binoculars (I know, what self-respecting bird watcher doesn't have binoculars?), I grabbed my trusty telescope and zoomed in on the these creatures. My handy-dandy field guide in hand, I turn the pages frantically to find this mystical creature. Its not a sparrow - too big; its not in the jay or woodpecker families - he was poking around on my grass, digging out bugs I imagine. Finally, I turn the page and what do I see? Its the European Starling - extremely rare! Okay, I'm just kidding. For those of you who know birds at all, you know that I am being extremely facetious. These birds are about as common as a crow just about all over the United States.
Here's the other extremely rare bird:
I know, I know. Its a House Sparrow. What more can I say? Almost as common as that darn Starling. He has visited us on numerous occasions recently but for some reason his coloring was throwing me off. Apparently, this is the adult male with breeding plumage.
By the way, I did not take these pictures...I wish! These are courtesy of Cornell University Lab of Ornithology. Great website for all things birdish.
