Mar. 18, 2008 - Our Wholehearted Convictions

Posted in Our Philosophy

Over the years of homeschooling our two DDs, we have come to a place of peace about how and why we do things the way we do.  We still struggle with hearing what the Lord would have us do in certain situations but we do our best to listen.  I think one of the biggest hurdles that any homeschooling family has to overcome is the burden of comparing themselves and their kids with others.  God made each of our children unique so we know right from the start that "the way they should go" is not only different from other people's children but also from each other.  This helps us to avoid the comparing trap - not that we don't fall into it from time to time - but the Lord is faithful to bring us out of it every time as He reminds us that our children are unique.

We believe that learning occurs in the small, simple moments throughout the day.  Jesus taught his disciples in the most natural setting of all - right alongside himself as they did life together.  Jesus said in Matthew Chapter 11 "
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."  I have been over-burdened as a mom many times but that is not the Lord's will.  He would have us walk in HIS way, not ours so that our burdens would be light.  How lovely a thought that is.  The homeschooling of our precious little ones need not be burdensome or weary either.  At a time in my life when I was over-burdened, I felt refreshment for my soul at Barb Shelton's website www.homeschooloasis.com.  If you find yourself feeling burned out or just plain weary, check yourselves into Hotel Barb for a spell.
