Apr. 4, 2008 - A Soggy One

Posted in Running the Race

I haven't posted anything in this category in a while.  Many of my friends ask me how the running is going so I'm going to try to update this section more often to keep whoever is interested in my progress updated.

I still have a goal of running a 10K sometime this summer.  I haven't picked one yet but I'm working toward that goal.  Right now, my training is 4-5 days a week of running anywhere from 2.5-3.5 miles.  I'm beginning to implement some fartleks (I just love saying that!) into my runs and am working on endurance.

A running schedule challenges me on so many levels because I have to become accountable to something.  Today I looked outside and I see what else...rain!  I know its totally a surprise to all of you who live in Seattle but the last few days we've been spoiled by very nice, mild, dry weather.  So today was a soggy one for me.  But the Lord really blessed me because as as much as I didn't want to go out in the stuff, I was quite refreshed and it felt rather...victorious to be the only one out on such a soggy morning.

So there you go.  I will try to update my progress as I think about it.

Mar. 25, 2008 - Fartlek?!

Posted in Running the Race

When I saw this word in my Cool Running training website that I love, I had to do a double-take.  Reid had told me that when he was in track, his coach made him do "fartlicks" and I thought that was just a funny name that his coach had made up to keep the mood light.  HA!  It turns out that a Fartlek is a Swedish word for "speed play".  Basically, the goal is to start off with a jog, then speed it up for 15 seconds all the way up to 2-3 minutes then back down to a jog.  As you do this in your training, your legs get used to various paces.  I think I might have to try this!

Mar. 19, 2008 - My Race

Posted in Running the Race

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 - Remember that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize.  You also must run in such a way that you will win.  All athletes practice strict self-control.  They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize.  So I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step.  I am not like a boxer who misses his punches.  I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should.  Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.

I love that Paul uses this metaphor of running a race to describe what our walk with God should look like.  It is a daily discipline just like training for a race as a runner would.  Having just finished my first 5K race, I can relate to this scripture even more.  I did not just go out and run a 5K.  Starting from a point of no exercise, I had to discipline my body to go out even when I didn't feel like it in order to finish strong.  When I went out to train, I didn't just go out for a quick jaunt around the neighborhood.  I went purposefully with the intent of reaching my goal.  So it is with my spiritual walk.  I must be purposeful in all areas - prayer, reading God's Word, listening to Him, worshiping Him.  If I go out and just run around the block, metaphorically speaking, I am not training myself for the goal - my heavenly reward.

I have a new goal now - to run a 10K.  I think its interesting that that goal does not seem quite as lofty as my 5K.  It has to do with all the preparation and ground work that I have already put in.  So it is with my spiritual walk (run).  The foundation has already been laid so now as I build upon it, day by day, moment by moment, it is easier to put God's truths into practice, to hear Him, to walk in His Spirit.  But I am still in training!  I think as I run for my eternal prize, I will always be in training.  As I keep training for the next level of running, the Lord will remind me that I am in training for His Kingdom.
