It's A Kid's Life: The Exciting Adventures of Emily Rose

The Day of the Big Wind

On Thursday January 3 I was looking at a calendar that had something interesting for each day in January 2008.     On the 4th  of January was Banana Pie Day.  That was the next day.  On Friday morning I got up had my worship etc.  By the time I was done Mama had made a delicious smoothie for breakfast.  I started drinking it up.  Mama was washing dishes in the other room and when I was about half done she said “Go downstairs and fill the bathtub” I was thinking “Why does she want me to do that??”  I figured she had a good reason though and went downstairs with my smoothie and book- It might be handy.  I turned on the Bathtub, finished slurping the rest up and dug into my book.

About halfway through the chapter the lights went out.  I ran to check the tub and it was full.  “Perfect timing” thought. After checking the drain to make sure it was up, I charged up the stairs to tell mom it was full.  When I got up I found out she had filled several pitchers with water,  one big one and two regular sized ones.  She had washed the dishes.

The wind was getting stiffer.  Dad started getting ready for work.  We were standing by the door when all of a sudden I saw my dad's big 120 foot crank up steel amateur radio tower's antenna go sailing out over the power lines, come whipping back like it was being jerked.    Next, a different part of the antenna went cart wheeling under the power lines and into the road.   The first part of the antenna hit the ground just as I saw the top of the tower crash onto the driveway.  All of this happened in about 30 seconds !  I think the antenna came undone and then triggered a chain reaction breaking two guy wires and all this caused the tower to fall.

Daddy looked confused for a few seconds then went shooting out the door like a shotgun and I took off after him with Forest right at my heels. It was a disaster.  The neighbors roof was gone, the wind was blowing us away, and dads tower was a Mess!  Dad decided  to try and move the tower out of the driveway but was interrupted when his big, black, ugly satellite dish (used for satellite ham radio transmissions) started to break apart and blow away.  The really heavy duty metal screen mesh that normally nobody could bend was flapping like paper in the strong wind.  Dad had to gather pieces that were blowing away.  Daddy finally got the tower out of the way.  The insurance company will probably pay for a new tower for him.

Mama says that if she had known how strong the wind was she wouldn't have let us go out.  It blew my brother over and nearly blew me down. Some people say the wind was blowing over 100 m.p.h. I think they are right.

I will not forget the day of the big wind, January 4, 2008 for a long long time!  You can go to Mama's blog and see what she wrote about about the tower mess and look at some pictures here.

What an exciting day you had! I'm sorry about your father's ham tower and dish. I know it will be much work for him to get everything fixed up again. I'm glad you are all safe! Storms like that can really change the landscape, can't they!

I'm so glad you didn't blow away.
Of course, I would have caught you if you'd blown past my house.

Emily Rose,
I really enjoyed reading your account of your very windy day. That same day where we lived, it was so windy that our power went out too! The trees bent over and branches and pine needles fell to the ground. It rained really hard and our roofed leaked a little.

It was a day to remember.

Thanks for your comment on my blog. :)
