I'm Back!

Mama has been making us new types of food, with new vegetables.  I like one of the vegetables, and the other two I don't normally like. You see, she found out that eating cruciferous Vegetables, (cabbage, brusselsprouts, brocoli, cauliflower, etc. i.e. cabbage family.) reduces your chance of cancer by 40 percent, if you increase your cruciferous vegetables by 20 percent.  For mama and daddy this is fine.  They love cabbage, brusselsprouts, and cauliflower.   I like brocoli (especially steamed, but I'll eat it any way) daikon radish (in salad), and kale in green smoothies, but that is about it.  At least, that was about it.  I used to push my brusselsprouts away.  Not anymore!  I ask for them and I always want more.  Why?  My mom figured out a way to make them taste good. Without that yucky stringy-mashed-bananna-flavored-with-potatoe-peelings texture.  Plus, their taste is different. What is the secret?  Baked Brusselsprouts!  Frozen baked brusselsprouts does not work.  You have to have fresh ones.
Mama also experimented with making cauliflower so that I would eat it.  I used to love it, and I still like it better raw than cooked, but I don't really like it.  Mama tried baking it with indian spices yesterday evening, and that stuff was pretty good!  I really like cauliflower "raw mexican rice." You can't even tell that it's cauliflower.  You can go to Mama's recipe blog, by clicking here.
I hope you enjoy her recipes!  Oh, by the way, She calls me "SisterBee" on that blog.

CHIP - Green Smoothie Presentation

This last Tuesday I helped Mama and Daddy with a presentation about green smoothies!

We went to the CHIP ( Coronary Health Improvement Project)  meeting being held in our area.
Daddy went to CHIP last year after he had his heart attack.  Well, Daddy has been managing the PA (sound) and Video controls off and on this year.  When the director of the meetings in our area asked us to give a presentation on green smoothies, we said yes!

The presentation went really well.  First we made a lot of smoothies in the back so that we could give a sample to everyone.  Then Daddy  went up and talked about his heart attack and how he likes green smoothies.  Then Mama and I went up and Mama started talking about green smoothies  Mama said that we don't chew our greens enough so we should blend them.  Most people don't eat enough dark leafy greens, but they are the most important food we can eat.  Blending them with fruit is an easy way to get more, without it even tasting like greens.  Greens really can taste quite good.   She let me fill the blender with the ingredients and I got to blend too.

You have got to try these!!  I really like them all.

At the end Mama passed out a recipe sheet.  This is what it said.

Green Smoothies!  Yum!
Food for life and Health

For a 64 oz blender jar
(adjust if you have a smaller size)

fruit (almost to the top of the jar)
3 or more dark leafy green leaves
2 bananas
2 cups water
pitted dates (optional)
a few nuts such as cashews or flax seed (optional)
vanilla bean (optional)
Blend until very smooth.

Remember:  There is no right or wrong when it comes to green smoothies.  Choose your favorite fruits.  Choose some greens.  Add water.  If you need it sweeter or more creamy, make it that way.  Make a fruit smoothie the way you like it and add greens.  It is a powerhouse of energy and health.
