The Guardian Epic Book 1: The Beginning

Chapter 8: The First Day

As Alainia entered the Dinner Hall, she was blasted with a swarm of talking. It was completely full of teens that were between the ages eleven and eighteen. She started walking down the isle and then noticed how stupid she looked wearing a sweatshirt and jeans. Everyone there seemed to be wearing mideivel clothing.

"Uh...Jason?" Alainia rushed up next to Jason and held on to his arm. "Why is everyone dressed like this?" Jason was smiling and his cheeks started to turn red. "Jason? Are you okay?" she waved her hand in front of his face.

"Huh?" Jason was brought back to reality and his cheeks became their normal color once again. "Oh, it's the festival today."

"What festival?" asked Alainia. "Green Fire didn't tell me about any festival."

"It's the festival to celebrate the past Guardians that have died in the One hundred year war. We chose this day because this is the day your parents ended the war by defeating Satasan, the leader of the Masked Warriors," he explained. "I don't dress up for it because I don't really see the point in doing so. I mean, it was only seven years ago, not the mideivil times."

"Oh," Alainia couldn't believe that her parents beat the leader of the Masked Warriors. When she looked back to her child hood, she could remember her parents being the kind of parents that embaressed their children a lot. Without realizing what she was doing, she moved her hand down Jason's arm and into his own hand. She felt like she was going to cry. If only she had actually known her parents.

"Why don't you sit down and I'll get you your breakfast," said Jason, bringing Alainia out of her thoughts. "I'll be back in a couple of minutes." And Alainia went and chose a seat at the end of one of the tables. She could feel people behind her staring at the back of her head and whispering.

"You know," Alainia said turning around to look at a group of girls all wearing ball gowns. "It's not polite to stare." The girls looked at each other and one of them got up. She had curly blonde hair that fell down to her waist. Her eyes were brown and she thin and short. The girl walked over to Alainia and held out her hand.

"I'm Zoe," she said. Alainia just stared at the girl's face and didn't even bother shaking her hand.

"I'm Alainia," she said. "Alainia Montez." Zoe's hand dropped down to her side.

"So that's why Jason likes you," she said sitting down next to Alainia. "Because your parents are famous. Us girls have been trying to get him to like us for five years now, but he doesn't seem to know what a...real girl...is supposed to look like." Zoe examined Alainia's sweatshirt and jeans. Alainia raised an eyebrow at her.

"Well, excuse me if I don't like to dress up like a prep," Alainia scoffed. "I think Jason likes because I'm not a frilly girl like you and your...posse." Zoe glared at Alainia.

"You know," she said, checking her manicured nails. "If you're careful, you can hang out with us."

"Hanging out with you is what I've always dreamed of," Alainia said sarcastically. Zoe's mouth dropped open as Alainia got up to move. As soon as she was sure Zoe couldn't see her face, she smiled.

"Hey," said Jason coming up with two trays. "What was going on between you and Zoe?" Alainia told him happened between the them. "Here, let's sit down real quick and you can tell me the rest while we eat." So they sat down and Alainia finished telling the story. When Alainia told him about the part when Zoe said that he liked Alainia, he laughed.

"What's so funny?" Alainia asked angrily.

"Nothing," said Jason hurriedly. "It's just that they finally figured out that I'll never like them. You know what, we still need to get you your dragon." And he took one last bite of his toast and got read to leave. As Jason got up he looked over in Zoe's direction and started to laugh.

"What?" said Alainia standing up to see what was so funny. She started to laugh too as soon as she saw Zoe and her group. They were all crying! "Wow, that's just sad. I say we make like a banana and split." Jason agreed and they hurried over to the dish drop off area.

On their way out of the dinner hall, they ran into a group of people. Jason and Alainia fell backwards and landed hard on the stone floor. They heard screaming and they looked up. A group of girls behind the group they ran into were falling down the stairs.

"Oops," said a familiar voice. It was Lurik. "Sorry about that!" he called.

"Oh well," said Miecyzslaw. She looked up and saw Alainia. "Alainia!" she ran over and hugged her. "It was so scary flying! I don't think I'm gonna be able to be a Guard-" Miecyzslaw then saw Jason and stopped talking instantly.

"Miecyzslaw," Alainia said. "He's mine. So don't even think about it."

"He's yours?" Miecyzslaw wined. "How come you always get all the hot guys?"

"Because I'm not a bookworm," she said putting her hands on her hips. "And he's my trainer...do you know who your trainer is yet?"

"I know his name, but I don't know what he looks like yet," said Miecyzslaw. "His name is Bjorn." Alainia laughed. "It's not funny! How old is your guy anyway?"

"Who? Jason?" Alainia asked. Miecyzslaw nodded. "Sixteen I think." Codie and Pier walked up to them. "I gotta go you guys. Jason's taking me to get my dragon right now. I'll see you guys later though." Alainia rushed over to Jason and their hands locked together. Pier looked as though he was going to cry. Alainia didn't notice this, but Codie did.

"It's okay, Pier," Codie reassured him. "I'm sure you'll find another girl." And they walked into the dinner hall.

Alainia and Jason walked down the halls hand-in-hand talking to each other. Alainia giggled every once in a while, but was mostly talking. Jason was telling her about the time when he got his first dragon.

"...and he got mad at me because I wouldn't let him eat the poisin berries, so he set me cape on fire. Ever since then, I have never worn mideivil clothes," Alainia started laughing. "Here we are," Jason said stopping in front of a big oaken door. "This is where you're going to get your dragon egg."

"Wait, do you mean I have to raise it myself?" asked Alainia a little worriedly.

"Don't worry," said Jason. "I'm gonna help you raise it. You have to chose the egg that stands out to you. Once you touch it, you can't change your mind." Alainia nodded. Jason let go of Alainia's hand and pushed open the door. A wave of heat spilled out and Alainia started to sweat. "Come on," and Jason and Alainia entered into the room.

Alainia gasped at what she saw. Right in the middle of them room was humongous ditch covered in coals. Around on the walls were what looked like giant bird nests with three or four eggs in the nests. There were hundreds of nests, and each egg looked different. Some of the eggs were covered in a rainbow of colors that looked as though they were dyed different colors. One egg however stood out to Alainia. It was only two colors, red and white. She walked around the ditch and towards the egg.

"Jason?" Alainia called. "Why does that egg only have two colors?" As carefully as she could, she picked up the egg and showed it to Jason. He took it and took a good look at it. After about a minute or so, he handed it back to Alainia.

"That egg stands out to you?" he asked. Alainia nodded. "Hm...I think that this means that you're not going to be any ordinary Guardian. The only other Guardian that has ever gotten a two colored egg was Master Gondora...that's why his dragon is green and black. That was the color of the egg he chose. I think that we can expect great things from you, Alainia...not just you, but your dragon as well." Alainia looked down at the egg and felt a bit nervous now. This was her first day and she already felt too much pressure.
