Homeschooling in Alaska

• Wednesday, August 16, 2006 - My First Entry

Hello Homeschool Bloggers!  I have been reading many of your blogs for a while now and I finally decided to join your ranks.  My name is Hannah and I live in beautiful Alaska!  My husband and I have 6 children- an 8yo daughter, 6yo daughter, one baby born straight into heaven, 3yo daughter, 15-month-old-son, and a baby girl due in November.

This will be our 4th year of homeschooling.  The last 2 years I used ACE PACE's, but we will be doing something different this year.  I've ordered Math-U-See, Apologia Exploring Creation with Astronomy, Handwriting Without Tears, and Sequential Spelling.  I already have Teaching Writing: Structure and Style from The Institute for Excellence in Writing, Old Testament Timeline from Grapevine Studies, and I downloaded several resources from Knowlegde Quest which include maps and blank timelines.  I still need to get history resources, which I'm hoping to be able to do at the library.  I also still need various school supplies.  I'm not planning on starting school until September, so I still have a little time to finish getting things together.

I've been reading a little bit about notebooking.  I think the Apologia is set-up to work well with notebooking.  I think my girls would really enjoy notebooking, so I need to figure it out a little bit more.

I guess I'll quit rambling for my first post.

Hi Hannah! Nice to "meet" you again. Sounds like you have a lot of your school all figured out! Great job!

We did Paces last year, and it was a nice break for me from having to figure it all out myself. I too would like to do the Apologia science, but for this year the older two are using Abeka. I am curious to see how MUS works for you. I am thinking of trying it with my younger ones. I have the IEW Teaching Writing too, but have never used it. We use Veritas Press as a base for our History, and I use their catalog to order books from the library.

I too am interested in notebooking. I have a couple of kids who I think would really like it! My oldest probably wouldn't as much, as he would rather just sit in the corner reading, but my second is very hands-on, as well as my daughter.

So you are due with another little one soon too, eh? We will have to meet up sometime! I have been wanting to take the kids to Seward sometime, but it didn't happen this summer, as dh was gone a lot this summer. Maybe next summer we will make it down there!

Do you know Molly from Choosing Home? They are having an Above Rubies retreat down your way this November. I don't know when you are due, but maybe you could make it?

I will add you to my friends list too! Welcome to Homeschool Blogger!

I saw your comment on Canadagirl's blog.

I have three girls - ages 8, 7, and 2. I had two "born straight into heaven" in 2002 and 2003. I have a little boy due November 2 of this year.

What brought you to Alaska? How exciting. We live on the mainland, but in the mountains (Colorado) away from it all.

I think you will have a good year with your curriculum. We use HWT (first grade, and cursive). I want to use Apologia, and will probably do so next year. As soon as my second daughter finishes her current curriculum, we will probably go to Math U See also.

How is your pregnancy going?

In Christ,
Carol

Looking forward to comparing notes on your Alaskan experience.
