Homeschooling in Alaska

• Wednesday, September 6, 2006 - First Day of School!

We finished our first day of school today.  The kids are all having "quiet-time" at the moment, so I thought I would sit down and update my blog.  I think I'm really going to like the quiet-time I scheduled for all the kids.  The older ones don't have to sleep- they can read or just rest quietly.  So far, so good!

We actually stayed on the schedule pretty well.  I got up at 7am and took my shower and spent time in the Word and prayer.  I got the kids up at 8.  They had to get dressed, make their beds, comb their hair, empty all the wastebaskets, and get all of the laundry to the basement.  We had breakfast at 8:30 and were cleaned-up and had the main floor tidied by 9.  At 9 we ventured to the basement (I made the main area of the basement into a school room this year).

We started with Bible time.  Then we did math, spelling, handwriting, science, and writing.  During a normal week, we will do history 3 days a week, and science 2 days a week.

Tomorrow I have a midwife appt, so we won't get much if any schooling done.  I'm glad we got started, though.  It gives me a better idea of what to plan and what to expect.

Math was the favorite subject of the day by far.  The girls love it!  I started MathUSee this year, and I'm excited about using it.

I guess that's about it for now.  I have dinner planned, and we have church tonight.  Tomorrow morning it is get up and get ready to head to Soldotna to see my midwives.

I am anxious to get things on a more normal schedule around here. Lately we have been getting the house ready to be moved, so we wind up being gone or getting back the apartment late, so we don't have a good school routine yet. Hopefully that will happen in the next week or so though.

So you like MathUSee? I have considered trying it, but I am not sure if it is too teach intensive. What grades are you teaching with it? Do you teach them all together?
