My journey to Joy in homeschooling

two weeks complete

So, we've done two weeks now.  She recognizes the letter A and B.  She also know what sound they make.  We've learned about creation, the fall, Cain and Abel, the Flood and the tower of Babel.  She knows how to count one and two (which she already knew, but this keeps it reinforced for her.)  Next week, we start to learn about Abraham, C and 3.  It's all very sequential and she is loving it!!  She gets so upset on Saturdays when there is no preschool.  She's okay on Sundays since she has Sunday School.

Oh, and in Wednesday night class, Brooke has learned all the books of the new testament!!!  I was just in shock when I realized that she's only three and she already knows it.  Her pronounciation isn't always right, but she loves to sing the song.

Brady still isn't walking, he's 14 months tomorrow.  We've still got one more month before they decide that he is significantly delayed in that area.  He did take 4 steps yesterday so he's headed in the right area.  That's all right, though, I'm sure he'll be fine.

Okay, I guess that's all.....

Our first day

We started preschool today.  I think I'm going to like this curriculum.  The only thing is that it gets done so fast and Brooke wants to do more.  So I aded some to it today, I think she's going to want me to keep adding more.  It only took us about a half hour to get it all done.  Then with the extra I think it totalled about 45 minutes or so.  At least I know it won't take us all day to do.  Even Braden got into it.  We were doing a fingerplay learning the sound that a makes and Braden was going aaa aaa, it was soo cute!!!  I had really not thought about what he would do while we did her preschool.  He ended up in my lap for most of it.  I think as it becomes a familiar routine that he will have an easier time going and playing.  But it all worked out fine.

Only one small disaster today, we used black tempera paint on top of the white crayon on white paper so that it would show up.  It was to illustrate that God made something out of nothing.  Anyway, I used a paper plate (actually 3) to mix my water and black paint on and when I got up to throw it away, it kept sloshing off the plate.  I kept tilting the plate back and forth and the more I tried to stop it the worse it got.  Thankfully I have hardwood floors and it came right off, but it sure was a mess!!!  It wasn't funny at the time, but thinking back on it I can already laugh about it.

And yes, we started on Labor day, but honestly, she has no idea it's a "holiday" and I didn't have anything else to do today so I decided we would just get started.

Our School Books

Brooke's curriculum came in yesterday.  It was exciting to open it up and explore.  I think I'm going to like it.  I sat down and plotted out the next month of things I need to prepare and things I need to buy to have a smooth four weeks.  I think I'll do that at the beginning of each month to keep ahead of the game.

The only part that I don't like is that I have to make copies of the papers in the book that she is to use.  It's a good thing b/c it means that I'll be able to use the curriculum again and again.  But I don't have a copier, so I'll have to find out where I can make the copies at.  I need to ask my sister how much they would charge to make copies at her work.  I bought a ream of paper, I just need an actual copy machine.

Brooke wants to start today, but I don't want to start until Monday so that we can get a fresh start on the week and because the lessons are set out with five in each unit.  I'm excited about the different things she'll be learning.  And I like the fact that they start with A and 1 and work there way up in the letters and numbers.  I've always thought it was confusing to start anywhere other than A and 1.

About my Family

I realized that I didn't say much about my family in my first post so here goes.

I have a wonderful husband who works hard so that I can stay home and take care of our two children.  My oldest, Brooke is going on 4 in November and she is very excited about starting school.  My youngest (for now), Braden, is 13 months and is a handful!!!  He is a rather spoiled boy and we are working on getting that out of him.  He loves to cuddle and to play with his sister.

My husband works on the North Slope here in Alaska so he is gone 3 weeks out of six.  On his time off, he works here in town some, but he loves to spend time home with us.

I enjoy scrapbooking, reading and writing.  I enjoy my internet time, but am trying to taper down and not be on here so much.  And yet, I just started this new blog so we'll see how that goal goes.

Anyway, this is just a little about us.

Also, for my daughter's curriculum, I chose Little Hands to Heaven from Lamp Post.   Has anyone ever heard of this or used it??

my first post

I just ordered my daughter's curriculum today for preschool.  I know that some people find curriculum unnecessary for preschool, but my daughter and I are very excited about starting!!  I was going to wait until January to start her as she won't be 4 until November, but my husband wanted us to start in September.

So here we are at the brink of becoming homeschoolers.  I will be praying that all goes well and that I will know if I'm going too fast with her and need to slow down.  She loves to learn and loves the idea of "school" so we'll so how it goes!
