The Blessing of Long Life
Posted in Bible Related
Have you even noticed all the verses in the Bible that have to do with a long life being a blessing? Here are a few to give you an example:
Genesis 25:8 Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years...
Ephesians 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
Prov 3:1-2 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
I guess we can conclude from these verses that the Lord considers it a blessing to have a long life. Now, I don't know about you, but I think that I would much rather spend all those extra years off of this sinful planet, and with my Saviour! But since God seems to say that a long life is desirable, I guess we better figure out what is so good about it, since we might just be blessed with "length of days".
For someone who is not a saved person, I can see how a long life can be a good thing -- I mean, if you didn't know what would happen to you when you died, you wouldn't want to die just to find out. Besides that, there are people you love and want to spend time with, places you want to go, and things you want to experience while you still have the chance. I, as a saved, born again child of God, would rather spend time with the Lord in heaven, than do all that, but anyway.
This is what I have come up with as to the blessing of having a long life. Revelation 4:11 says, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. Since our ultimate purpose in life is to bring honour and glory to God, if you have a longer life, it means you have more of a chance to bring more glory and pleasure to God. Besides that, you also have more of a chance to receive rewards and blessings for your labors, although that shouldn't be the reason we serve the Lord.
So there you have it. Something to think about for a few seconds before you click off my blog. I'm probably missing at least one more very important reason why a long life is a good thing, but I don't know what it is. So if any of you come up with another idea than what I mentioned, I'd be glad to hear it!

I agree, life is something less pleasing then heaven, but when you are on the earth, you may serve Christ, and help him spread the scripture. Paul said somewhere, when they were kill him, When you kill me, I will go up to my Lord. Then, they said, Then we will let you live as punnishment. and he said, Then I will serve him until the time comes.

Your mom asked me to wander on over and take a peek at Kate Dunlop and friends. And I love her! Seriously, I read the entire first 'book' in one sitting and found it creative and clever. Your use of dialogue is excellent. You have the 5 elements of a story:
character: Kate
setting: her home
problem: somebody "breaks" in to her home
plot: discovering who and why they broke in'
solution: they are long-lost relatives.
A beginning, a middle, and an end. That's story! No filler (AKA boring going on and on about stuff) here! You write tight. You clearly have talent.
I agree with your mom that you could learn a few things that would add sparkle and shine to future Kate Dunlop stories if you took the FREE writing workshop class that Amy takes. You can skip around if some of it you already know.
Oh, and I like your button from your site to the story archives. I just might copy you and do that myself! I have MANY stories from when i was a a young person and it would be fun to share them with the other young writers on HSB.
And your template is lovely. I can see that you and your sister are talented in many way.
God bless you and I hope to keep in touch. When I have some more extra time I will read Kate #2!

Great post! Long life is definitely a blessing. The older people get, the more wisdom (usually :-) they seem to have. That gives them the opportunity to bless others by their knowledge, and the longer they live, the more time they have to glorify God.
RYC: Yes indeed, it is such a comfort being able to trust in Jesus and take every worry and care to Him.
Blessings,
Mandy
