A Trip to the... Farm?
Today my sisters and I got to experience something fun. We went to a farm! Well, sort of. The only thing this lady was missing were horses, pigs and cows. Every other farm animal was there. She had turkeys, chickens, pheasants (we each got a tail feather to take home!), goats, sheep, cats, dogs, and even bees. The main reason we went today was to see this lady's new, one-day-old baby goats. They were sooooo sweet!!!!

On the way there, we saw this beautiful sight. Who says Arizona never gets snow?!? That is such a lie. Yeah, I'll admit, it's rare to get that much here, and we don't get any at our house ever, but the fact of the matter is, Arizona DOES get snow. Lots of it.

We all got to pet and hold the baby goats (there were quadruplet one-day-olds and twin two-day-olds. Wow, what a difference in size one day makes!). Like I said before, they are soooo sweet!!! They are adorable! It's almost hard to believe that they will grow up to be just as big as their mother! I think Emily held the kids the most. She was constantly picking them up and putting them down. They didn't seem to mind too much, though. Look at all those kids!! That's not even all of them, there's still another goat that's going to have her babies any day now. You've got to love the names -- Knit and Perl are the twins, and Matthew, Mark, Mary, and Martha are the quadruplets! We also fed the sheep and petted the two friendly (but big) dogs.

I thought this was adorable!! Aren't they the cutest things?

After we'd been outside for a while, we went inside and played with the lady's musical instruments. She's a violin expert -- she started teaching lessons at age twelve, and she used to play in the San Diego symphony! She also plays cello, piano, and lots of other instruments (someone said she can play every orchestra instrument, not sure if that's true or not). She's kind of but not really a potential violin teacher, the two major drawbacks being the price and the distance we would have to drive every lesson. But we got to play around for a little bit.

First Emily got to hold and "play" a tiny violin just her size. She kept saying how squeaky it was. LOL. She would do great with it if she ever took lessons. That girl has musical talent!

Then I got out my violin. Amy played the piano, Ms. W played her cello, and I played the violin. Ms. W didn't even know the song Amy and I were playing (church music), and she was able to accompany us beautifully on her cello!!! Wow. Then she asked if I had brought any violin music that had a piano part. I took out the Meditation from Thais, and I was thinking, No way! I haven't attempted this piece in months, if not a year!! And now I'm just supposed to play it with the piano, like I know what I'm doing?!? LOL! So I was kind of like, "Well, okay, I guess we'll just see how this goes..." So, after a quick tune up (or rather a "tune down" to her not-quite-in-tune piano) she started, and I jumped in. I don't think I played the timing correctly in several spots, but in any case, she was able to play the piano part along with me great and cover for a bunch of my mistakes of hitting the wrong notes and etc. I only got lost twice, and skipped a few measures, but after we'd finished, I was amazed! I had just played a piece of music that I thought I couldn't play!!! After that we played the Concerto for Two Violins by Bach. That was fun, too.

After we'd finished that, she said that I ought to audition for the orchestra in such-and-such town, and she was really wanting me to, but it just won't work out. For one thing, that's a really long way to travel all the time for practices, and the practices are on Sundays, so of course I can't be a part of it. But she was coming up with all kinds of ideas like (saying to my mom), "Well, if you just drive her up to my house, I'll take her the rest of the way and even drive her home again." But, no, it's just not going to work out. I'm not all that disappointed. If we had something like that in our own town, yeah, it would be great to be involved... maybe. But I guess we'll just have to trust that the Lord has something better in store.

I asked if I could try to play her cello. This was probably the only opportunity I was going to have for years, and I've wanted to try a cello for a while, just to see what it was like. Well, I've got to say, it's very different from playing the violin, but at least I wasn't making a terrible amount of squeaks. It wasn't the greatest, but it could've been a lot worse, too, LOL! I was able to pick out a couple tunes. Do I look like I know what I'm doing? Haha! I'm a LOT more comfortable with violin.

After that, we packed up and headed home. I'm so glad we got to go, it was soooo much fun!! And for us city kids, getting to see all those animals was definitely great, too. I wish we had goats. Okay, okay, I don't really... but they are fun for a few hours!

Oh! The babies are so cute. *Remembers little darlings that were once my very own*

It always amazed me how quickly our baby goats grew! One day the were little tiny, and the next they could no longer craw into your lap for a story. (Yes I used to read to my baby goats!)

Yes you do want to put it on a lower iso like maybe 100 or 80 and then you just move the camera around.

sorry if you did not understand any of that:( hope you have a very good Christmas!!!

Hi!

Soooo sorry it took me sooooooo long to comment on this! But I've been working on your e-mail, that should count for something!!

Great to see the pictures! When we went to a goat farm a couple summers ago they had Nubians - and they are sooooooooo cute (as you know)! Mom said if we ever got milk goats, Nubians would be the ones! We didn't get to hold any :( but we did get to bottle feed the babies!! :) Some of the young ones were in these white bins and you couldn't touch them - don't know why. But I suppose they have to do all those sanitation things because they sell their milk! :o) Now you have to come to our farm to experience horses - you think I could get you on a trail ride with me? Hee hee hee ( evil laugh) Again, cute pics! And the music part looked like fun too! I don't know how well I would do with just jumping in with a song that I haven't practiced since a long time! I think I'm more shy than you - but neither do I think it should have a whole lot to do with it! If you were part of a orchestra we would have another reason to come visit you - to hear you play!

You show a snow picture and our snow is melting today - in the 30's!!!! Of course we still have a lot left. But I saw you guys in t - shirts, jealous!!

Well, I'm signing off now!! Have a wonderful day!

Love,
Amber

You look good on the cello, Alison! I would suggest pulling it up so it's a bit more secure between your legs. Looks like a full-size...those are tough, at least for short people like me. *grin*

Thanks for your comments on the new template. I'm still fiddling with it, and I'll see about incorporating those suggestions. (I actually replied to your comment on my post, hence the short reply here.)

It sounds like you had a lot of fun, and the baby goats were the cutest pictures of baby goats that I have seen in a long time.

The music bit sounds like a lot of fun as well. It would be neat to know how to play an instrument well enough to just get together and try a piece.

Have a very bright, very cheerful day!

Wow, that sounds like a really neat experience. Some cousins on my mom's side of the family have a farm in NC and when we visit our Grandma there we go to see them every now and then. Last time we went they had baby goats. They are so adorable! I loved your pictures. It would be fun to try a cello sometime. I play the violin too. I love the concerto for two violins. I have not actually played it yet, but I have heard it. I was in book four when we moved here and my new teacher took me back to the beginning to review some basic stuff, so right now we're still in book two. *yawn*, but that's ok because we're learning a lot!

There is a Christian school here that has an orchestra that allows some homeschoolers. My sister and I want to try out for it sometime. That would be so neat!

In Christ,
Christine

I was hoping you'd say something like that. =)

Honestly, I don't know why I ever even considered switching... Perhaps it was thanks to the fact that I had wanted to open an online store (which I will, most likely, be closing before it ever had a chance to open), and I opened the account on blogger.com. After seeing how easy-breezy it was to use, I started contemplating switching over there permanently. Brittanyrose recently switched, and I do miss her dearly. I'm sure people would feel the same way about me if I switched... at least one, anyway. =)
