I've been canning....

Posted in Homemaking

Today I have been busy canning. I canned green beans: 16 pints, 7 quarts. Still have another batch to go, will probably get another 5-7 quarts done tomorrow. I also did pickles: 6 pints, 2 quarts. I have never done those before. Someone told me to just use one of the mixes you find at the store. It takes 4-6 weeks of sitting before we can try them, so I guess we will find out then what they taste like.

Tomorrow I'm going to see if I can get some peaches and pears at the country store. I also want to get some more kidney beans to cook up and freeze. I save so much money doing that. I can make two crockpots full of chilli and spend less than $2.00 on beans. Can't do that buying them already canned at the store.

Food I've already put away: I froze 10# of blueberries, 20# of yellow cherries, 1gallon-size bag of cut up rhubarb, and 2-1gallon size bags of strawberries. Usually I'm able to get sweet corn, but the farm I get it from didn't grow any this year. They are so generous to us, thats where I get my rhubarb, greenbean, and cucumbers for free. I have no where to grow really, so this comes in really handy. They are members of the congregation we go to, we also have class with them each week at there house, so we do all the driving. But this helps out with that.

Piano lessons...

Posted in Homemaking

My dd-6 and I have started piano lessons last week. Actually, I have been taking them off and on since June, whenever dd-18 hasn't been able to make it.

DD-6 is sitting at the piano practicing right now. I noticed she keeps getting up, walking to the other side of the room, then walks back to the piano and bows before sitting down. She is pretending she is at the spring recital. I just think its funny. She is just so excited about learning and being able to play like her older sister.

If anyone wants to give a gift to themselves, have your children learn to play. You will have years of entertainment. I just love to listen to dd-18 play while I'm making dinner or cleaning or just relaxing.

Magazine Holders...

Posted in Homemaking

I don't remember which blogger gave this saving tip, so when I come across it I will put a link to her site.

In some areas, public school is just starting. So what does this have to do with magazine holders? Well, if you go to the supply area in the department store, you should be able to find some empty boxes that help folders, they look like magazine holders to me. I got a few at Walmart the other day, FREE. I don't know if you have ever priced these before, but they are not cheep, and they are great for so many things.

Tip for Fans...

Posted in Homemaking

Well, its that time of year when we have about 6 fans running though the house. Unfortunately, we don't have an airconditioner, and it doesn't look like we will have one anytime soon. I went to a friends house one day last summer and this is what she had done to her fans.

After you have completely cleaned the fans ( we need to do this still) wrap netting around them, the kind you would use for wedding veils. Needs to be small holes. I think I paid less than a dollar a yard for mine. Then every so often, you just have to take it off and wash, then put back on. It will catch all the grime that you usually find your fans collecting.
