QOTW: July 10

Posted in QOTW
What is QOTW???  Question of the Week.  I simply list a question that one of my kids has asked me this week.  You post your answer (and your kids age(s)) in the comments section and a couple days later, I'll update with the answer I had for them.  Just your raw answer - no cheating by looking up answers online.  What would your answer be, straight from the gut?

This week wasn't a hard one, per se, but it did make me think about it for a few minutes until I came up with an answer that was all inclusive.  So here goes...

QOTW: What is a business, Mommy? (age 5)

Answer from my 5 y/o: A business is where you can work, and make money. You can make rack for Walmart, Home Depot, and any other place that needs rack, and they can use it. (dh is a welder for racking systems) Another business is Walmart, and they make cars, dog food, monster trucks, food and juice. Businesses make and sell stuff. (typed as he spoke.)

( I have to admit I am a bit surprised...I didn't realise my wee one had such a grasp on this concept!)

That's a very smart wee one you have there!! I think he has the concept down great! :) What I wanted to know though, was how would YOU answer the question if your DC (dear child) asked?

Since I answer in concepts more than definitions...I thought and this is how I answer:
A business is any place to provides a service, sells a product or gives information that for a charge. Like Daddy works at a business since they sell cars. Cars are a product. Doctor Jon works at a business since he gives medical help. That is a service. Aunt Jill works at a business since they help solve problems for people with computer programs. That is information for a charge.

A business provides goods or services in exchange for money. Goods are things - like toys or clothes or food. Services are things like haircuts or telephone service or cable TV. We give businesses money and they give us something inreturn.
