KinderBach Learning Center

As a member of the TOS Crew, I was given the opportunity to review a company that offers online children’s piano lessons. My family was given a membership to fully review the lessons and curriculum. I will describe the program as well as our personal experience as you read on.

The KinderBach Learning Center was created by Karri Gregor. Her background includes musical education, singing, and visual arts. Karri developed KinderBach after an unsuccessful search for an instructor for her two children. She started a music studio and taught many children, until her husband was transferred. At this time she decided to use her teaching ability and style to develop a video curriculum, and KinderBach was started. It is designed to provide children with a music foundation. It is geared for children ages 2-7 and teaches reading notes, rhythm, patterns, and how to play the piano. The program is offered online or as DVD’s and can be purchased in various packages. There is printable material that is included in the program cost. The program is 2 years or 60 weeks of instruction. Children do not have to read in order to use this program and, parents do not have to have a musical background.

Karri uses characters that she created to tell a story which incorporates the piano keys. Frisco is a young boy who has a pet donkey, Dodi. Together their stories are fun and interesting for small children. Throughout the lessons there are additional characters that are introduced. You can read more about how this program can benefit you and your child here. You can even view the first 2 lessons free to see just how KinderBach works. If you are interested in purchasing, you can get one month for $14.95 or a year for $85.95. This is an affordable way to introduce piano if you do not have access to in person piano lessons. You will only need to purchase an inexpensive keyboard.

There are variations to KinderBach and can be used in your home or in a classroom. You can learn more information about the classroom setting here.

Now on to our personal experience. I will first start out by saying that my children were 8 (ds) and almost 13(dd) when we reviewed this. We are a musically inclined family and my dd is incredibly gifted with piano. All of us, except my dh, can play by reading as well as hearing music. At 4 my dd played Sesame Street on the piano with no instruction at all. She has been taking private music lessons since 4 and my ds since 5. I also have an education in music. That said, we still went into this review with open minds and with the excitement of trying something new. It did not take long for both kids to find the videos uninteresting and babyish. Without trying to sound extremely critical, this program is not at all interesting to me, either. The videos are done with drawn graphics in the background and Karri in the front, similar to Blue’s Clues. The program is done professionally, but the graphics and audio are difficult to enjoy. This program is supposed to be for children 2-7 but I do not believe that a child over 5 would find it fun, at least the first 3 levels (level 4 doesn’t start until week 31). Though the children do learn a little about keys and how to sing songs, it is very basic and does not offer true formal instruction. I do not believe that this program is as effective in teaching piano as other programs are. There are other programs out there that are online and those that are in person that may work better.

My reviews are not usually this critical and I will restate that we were graciously offered a free membership in order to review this. I will also restate that we already have formal instruction so our opinion may be biased. Karri is still working on her website and her company and things may change as she grows. She does state on her website that 1000’s of children have successfully used her program. I invite you to read other crew member’s reviews to get more information and opinions of KinderBach. You can try the first 2 lessons for free, too, and see  if this may be right for you.
