Heads Up! Review

Being a member of the TOS Crew has given my family and me an opportunity to review some really incredible products. It’s hard to choose which we liked more or which was more helpful. There is one, though, that I have recently received that is high on the list for both. The company is Heads Up! and they are dedicated to providing information and products to anyone who works with struggling learners: teachers, occupational and speech therapists, parents, daycare providers, Sunday school teachers. The deficit needs do not have to be debilitating or even obvious to the naked eye in order for the products to work. All of the products sold by Heads Up! “have been selected to accommodate various learning styles and strengths, regardless of curriculum used.”

Scott & Melinda Boring created Heads Up! with a “desire to be a source of practical help and encouragement to others…”. Melinda is a speech/language pathologist. According to the website, she “has sought to be a student of her children, attempting to educate herself in order to be more effective as a parent and teacher.”  Heads Up! offers products for children with ADD/ADHD, Aspergers, Autism, and learning style differences. There are books, CD’s, literature, and learning aids.

Heads Up! Frames 4x9 & 4x4.5We received reading aids. They are incredible and exactly what we needed! They are frames made of transparent colored polycarbonate with printed frames. While working with my son, I would encourage him to use an index card or his finger under the words to help him focus on each word. Heads Up! ReaderIt seemed like he was unable to concentrate on just the word or he was distracted by the other words. These readers essentially highlight the words/sentences and cover the other words. They come in different sizes: long and narrow for one sentence, long and wide for a paragraph, full page, and square. The square is ideal for math problems. Each helps to detract from the amount of words or problems on the page and allows the focus to be strictly on what the student is working on. They also come in different colors so the student can choose the one that works for him. My son’s reading greatly improved when using these tools. I was impressed!

As you can see from our experience, these products are not just for those with diagnosed learning challenges. They can be for anyone that needs even just a little bit of help. I believe you will find them beneficial for your family, too.

The reading aids are very reasonably priced at $1 each to $5 each. The other products are also priced to fit most budgets. Check out Heads Up! here.
