Beyond Five in a Row – Volume 2

Have you heard of Five in a Row (FIAR)? I had, but had not seen their products, until becoming a member of the TOS Crew. I have now had the privilege of reviewing Beyond Five in a Row, one of their literature-based unit studies.

FIAR was created by Jane Claire Lambert. She is a veteran homeschool mom with more than 17 years of experience.  Jane started with unit studies for children 4-8 years old. These studies included reading a different classic story everyday and completing lessons in Social Studies, Language, Art, Applied Math, and Science. There are three volumes available for FIAR. Jane then created BFIAR. There are a total of 3 volumes available with BFIAR, like FIAR. However, BFIAR does not use a book a day, there a 3 classical stories for each of the volumes. Each volume is covered in one semester. We received volume 2 which utilizes the books Sarah Plain and Tall & Skylark by Patricia MacLachlan, The Story of George Washington Carver by Eva Moore, and Helen Keller by Margaret Davidson.

We really enjoyed this volume of BFIAR. We only had time enough to get through Sarah Plain & Tall for our review but intend on finishing the volume with the other stories. It is intended to read one chapter each day and complete the lessons included. Almost every subject is covered through lessons, aside from math and grammar/spelling/penmanship, but there is no reason why these couldn’t be added to correlate with the story. We had fun with this unit study, and plan to use it along with our other curriculums. It offers a nice break from the structured days that we used to have before becoming a member of the crew. Both kids like that.

You can read more about BFIAR at FIAR’s website. While there, you can also go to the message boards that are individualized for each Unit Study series. FIAR also offers Before Five in a Row, and Above & Beyond FIAR. There are different prices for each of the studies and all volumes of each study can be purchased as a package. To check the prices out, you can go to the catalog page.

BYFIAR is available for $89.95 as a package with the BYFIAR Christian Character Bible Study, or $67.50 for the 3 volumes only.

If you like unit studies or are considering trying one it, check out Five in a Row, I think you’ll find it just as enjoyable as we do.
