So last week, Sept 24-Sept 30, we plowed on with week 19 from Core 3.  It was a hard week again, as I am working out a system that works for us without our mother’s helper.  I am getting used to doing everything by myself, and really beginning to enjoy spending so much time with the children!!!

So anyway—for Bible, we continued reading about Paul’s missionary journeys, in Acts 16-18.  We memorized James 4:17 for our memory verse.  We also read about the Cherokee tribe, from American Indian Prayer Guide.  We had some very interesting discussions about culture, and what it was.  We also talked about the differences in our American culture and Peruvian culture.  I asked the girls to identify differences.  A. said that they had a big lunch and smaller dinner, while K. said that they didn’t have as many material things.  A. also pointed out that there were no washing machines.  We discussed that culture really encompasses so many things, and that there was no “right” or “wrong” culture, they are all just different.  We also discussed again, how great it was that Paul respected the various different cultures that he visited on his journeys.

We finished the chapter on why the British lost the war from our Landmark history book.  We also read about the Revolutionary War in The Story of the USA, book II.  We went through the first 2 chapters in this book, which discussed the beginnings of the US governement.

Towards the end of the week, we started If you were there when they signed the Constitution, which described in more detail the Philadelphia convention, the men who participated, and what they were thinking.  It is a very interesting book!

We continued reading about the Iroquois tribe. We learned about where the Iroquois bathed, whether they lived in the same village all their lives, who was in their family, and what a “longhouse” family was.

We also read poetry selections from our Classic Poetry book.  We read Lewis Carroll’s “The Mock Turtle’s Song”, which the girls all thought was a bit silly.  In addition, we read “Jabberwocky” which none of us understood.  LOL

We continued our study of life in science.  We’re still using Living World Encyclopedia.  This week, we read about animal life, and what it means to be extinct and what an endangered species was.  We thought it was sad that entire species could be extinct.  We also began studying about the seas and oceans.  We read about the different oceans, the continental shelf, and the different types of plants that grow in the ocean.  We read about the ocean surface, and how most living things live in the top 100 m of the ocean because sunlight does not go down any deeper.  We read about plankton and how important it is to ocean life.  We learned about whales, both toothed and baleen, and dolphins and porpoises.

At the end of the week, we read about the water cycle from Usborne’s Science Activities, vol 3.  We did a very cool experiment.   We got a large clear glass bowl, and put some very hot water in at the bottom.  This represents the water in the seas and oceans which are warmed by the sun.  We knew this water isn’t usually hot, but anyway.  LOL  Then we covered the top of the bowl with clear plastic wrap.  We placed some ice on top of the bowl, to cool the air around the top of the bowl.  This represents the air in the sky, the higher up in the sky, the colder the air.  So the warm water began to evaporate and rise up as tiny invisible droplets.  As it approached the colder air at the top, it began to condense, and we were able to see the drops on the clear plastic wrap.  Then, the water droplets got heavy enough to fall back into the “sea”.  We really enjoyed this experiment and thought it demonstrated the water cycle very well.

We also actually covered Mozart, from our The Story of the Orchestra book.  Next week, we will listen to the CD titled The Story of Mozart

This week for math, K. learned about the millions place value.  She continues to do well with math, and was able to teach this concept back to me at the end of the week.  She also finished her Mind Benders logic book.

For vocabulary, she reviewed lesson 3 from Wordly Wise.  She also continued with her Sequential Spelling.

She continued reading from 2 Samuel and also began reading passages from 1 Kings.  She began reading George Washington, Our First Leader for her reader.  We are also continuing on with Toliver’s Secret for our read aloud.  The story is getting suspenseful!!!

A. continues to practice multiple digit addition this week.  She is also doing logic with her Mind Benders workbook.

She is still working on her MCP Level C book, and Sequential Spelling.  She is doing HWT’s Printing Power.  She didn't have a creative writing assignment again this week, because the one listed in our program guide was a bit too heavy for her level.  However, A. is writing her own book, and she adds to it every day.  She says it so far has 50 chapters, and many many characters.

She is continuing Viking Adventure for her reader, and we began reading The Secret Soldier for our read aloud.  She is enjoying both books.  Viking Adventure is about a young boy who travels with a Viking ship, and his adventures on this ship.  it is obviously set back in the old Viking times.  The Secret Soldier is about a young woman who dresses up as a man in order to fight as a soldier in the American Revolutionary War.

Well that is all.  Retrospectively, I would say this week has been the hardest in terms of managing without help.  But I am sure there is a way to do all of this and God continues to train and equip me.  Praise His Holy name!!!

AH.

You Are a Mac
You are creative, stylish, and super trendy. You demand the best - even if it costs an arm and a leg.
You Are Austin
A little bit country, a little bit rock and roll. You're totally weird and very proud of it. Artistic and freaky, you still seem to fit in... in your own strange way. Famous Austin residents: Lance Armstrong, Sandra Bullock, Andy Roddick
You Belong in Paris
You enjoy all that life has to offer, and you can appreciate the fine tastes and sites of Paris. You're the perfect person to wander the streets of Paris aimlessly, enjoying architecture and a crepe.
What Your Pizza Reveals
Your appetite is pretty average. You don't go overboard - but you don't deprive yourself either. You aren't particularly picky about pizza. It's so good... how could you be? You fit in best in the Western part of the US. Your taste in food tends to favor what's rich and comforting. You prefer food that will definitely satisfy you. You are eclectic, stylish, and totally random with your choices. You are deep and thoughtful. You should consider traveling to Paris. The stereotype that best fits you is guy or girl next door. Hey, there's nothing wrong with being average.
