K’s work up to date 9/10-10/7/2007
Here are K’s creative writing assignments up to date. For the week of 9/10-9/16, her assignment was to write an expository paragraph about something she recently experienced. She chose to write about her trip to Peru. Here is her paragraph:
Peru was great! I enjoyed Peru. It was a fun experience. I liked to se new things and learn about Peru. We went to a lot of museums. We even went to Machu-Picchu. We took Spanish classes. That’s why we went. I shared a class with Anja. Everyone else had their own teacher. Mornings were the best part of the day. I looked out a window and watched early morning Peru. The first day I did that, I got bread with Ruth. The second day I went to the attic with Ruth’s husband and helped him with a lot of corn and then got bread with Ruth. Peru was a really good trip!
The next week, Sept 17-Sept 23, she had two writing assignments. For the first assignment, she had to answer a question: Do you think God set up Squantos’ life such that he could help the Pilgrims? Why or why not?
Here is K’s answer:
I think God did set Squanto up for helping the Pilgrims. When he was taken to England, he learned English—there is one reason. And also he learned the English ways, there is another reason. Because he had no family, he did not have to take care of one. Because Squanto spoke English, he could translate for the American Indians. Because Squanto was an Indian, he knew how to survive in America. He helped the Pilgrims survive also. Because Squanto knew kind and unkind Indians, he knew not all whites were bad.
For the second writing assignment, she had summarize the Pilgrims’ experience to America. She used the book The Thanksgiving Story as her reference. Here is her summary:
The Pilgrims wanted freedom when they came to America. They did not want freedom like Black slaves, they wanted freedom of worship. They wanted to worship God in their own way. The Pilgrims came from Holland on the Mayflower. But the Pilgrims started with 2 ships: the Speedwell and the Mayflower. But the Speedwell broke so everybody got on the Mayflower.
The Pilgrims landed in Cape Cod, but then went on to Plymouth. They landed on December 1620. It was winter. Many people died or became sick. But spring did come and the American Indians did too. The American Indians helped them plant corn. They taught them to put fish and then corn. They had a good harvest. The Pilgrims wanted to give thanks to God for taking care of them. They invited the Indians also. They had a big feast. The Indians bought food also. They had a huge feast: corn and turkey, bread, berries and more! The people had a big party! The boys even exercised their arms! It was the first Thanksgiving.
For week 19, Sept 25-30, K had a really fun writing assignment. She was to look at a picture and write a fictional piece based on what she saw.
And here is K’s story:
"I have to find my parents," thought Lilly in panic. In her arms she held Vill. Vill was a Bronber from planet Zercferzs. Lilly's father had gotten him for her. "I have to get my bag and find a police or a Jiz," thought LIlly. Jiz's were also from outer space. They had an extra senseto know where things were.
"LIlly, it's too early I am going home!!!" said Vill as he jumped out of her arms.
"No," cried Lilly and caught him. Lilly got her bag. A police told her that many of the people coming of the same rocket as her parents had been accidentally transformed. No one no one at all knew who was who. With a sinking heart, Lilly thanked him.
"But," he said, "that's not all if you can find a way to take that key out without filling yourself and unlock this lock." The man pointed to a vocker and a lock as he spoke. "Everyone will go back to normal."
"Thank you, " said Lilly.
"Good things will happen," yelled Vill.
"Oh good," said Lilly. Lilly knew most of the time if a person touched a vocker net in a nalsper they died but slowl she raeched out and took it out. It worked! The lock unlocked and a dog became her dad and a cat became her mom.
Last week, week 20, Oct 1-7, 2007, her writing assignment was to write about the main theme of the book, The Courage of Sarah Noble. Here is her paragraph:
In the book The Courage of Sarah Noble Sarah finds the most courage is the kind of courageous kind of courage is courage when you are afraid. This is because it is easy to do something you are not afraid of. It is a lot harder to do something you are afraid of. Sarah was afraid of sleeping in the woods, but she did it anyhow. She had to face many things, an owl, a fox, even a wolf. But she kept up her courage and finally fell asleep. Sarah was afraid to be with American Indians but she kept up her courage and was nice most of the time. Even when children of the American Indians crowded around her she kept her courage. Father wasn’t even there!!! It was the most scary to stay in the house of the American Indians but she did it anyhow. She kept her courage until Father came back. Sarah kept her courage the whole trip, even when it was hard and even when she was afraid.
I can't say it enough--we are really enjoying Sonlight's new LA programs!!!
I am sorry to say that I have been very bad about giving A. her writing assignments. We are using the old LA 2 program and frankly, some weeks the assignments are too challenging or don't have enough guidance. However, A. writes almost daily in her book. She has written about 50 chapters she says, and her book is full of interesting stories. I plan on putting it on the blog some day.
AH.
