Amazed!!!
Oct. 15, 2008
Week 7, starting 10/6/08
I almost forgot to blog about our last week. We continued to do well this week.
For history, we read about the events leading up to the Civil War. I am pretty sure I never learned it in this much detail, because I don't remember much of it. LOL I just remember North--no slaves, South--slaves. But there was so much more to it than that.
We began reading Across Five Aprils this past week and it promises to be another great book. We are also reading The Perilous Road. Both books have provided much fodder for discussion. We're really amazed by how divisive the War was, not only for the country in general, but for families, neighbors, friends. I guess I had never thought about the fact that not every Southerner was for slavery or even owned slaves, and not every Northerner hated slavery. I won't say more so I won't spoil anything, but anyway--we have enjoyed our readings this week.
Both K and A moved forward in their respective MUS books. K. will be done in about 9 weeks with Gamma.
Language arts was the usual. K. is doing much better this year with Spelling Power, and A. is still a great speller.
L. is just thriving with school. She will be done with her Primer MUS book and is flying through her 2nd grade readers. Her handwriting continues to improved, and best of all, at age 5, she goes to her desk at 9AM, sits down for 30 min. and does all her seatwork without a peep. She rarely makes mistakes and laughs at herself when she does. She is enjoys her SL PK books and is just a joy to teach.
We finished all of our radishes experiments. We didn't do everything, but we did most of it. K. really enjoys gardening, so we bought some organic radish seeds, potting soil and pots and now we have some nice radish sprouts in our backyard!
Here are some more pics of our radish experiments:
This picture shows our seeds in 4 different environments.
The seeds on top of the lid were in a "desert" environment:

The seeds at the bottom of the cup were in a "swamp" environment:

The seeds on one side of the paper towel were in a humid environment, as they were covered by plastic:

And finally, the seeds on the other side of the paper towel were in a cool dry environment, as they were not covered by plastic:

We also did an experiment to see which seeds would sprout faster, the ones in a dark environment, or the ones in light:

Those were just some of the experiments we did this week with radishes!!! We had a lot of fun.
Well that was it for this week!
God bless,
A.H.
We got our art supplies and our first Artistic Pursuits book, so we're eager to start art next week! |
