Weeks 8 and 9, starting 10/13/08 through 10/24/08

Posted in General
These were really nice weeks.  We are learning so much about the Civil War and about Lincoln.  The reference book we are using for Lincoln is excellent--Lincoln:  A Photobiography.  He truly is a remarkable man.  We were surprised that a man regarded now as one of the best presidents we have had was so controversial in his time.

We are also reading Turn Homeward, Hannalee.  I have to admit, initially I was a little annoyed that we were reading so many books written from the point of view of people who were on the Confederate side, but I have to say, it has been great to see how they viewed the war.  K. is reading this book as her reader and I am reading to A. for her read aloud.  We are enjoying this book.

Our Bible study is still wonderful.  We are learning different aspects of friendship and how to handle different situations.  We went over getting revenge when we are hurt and also how to handle things when friends move away (or when we move away).

I am continuing to read Across Five Aprils to K.  It is very good.  I have heard that some folks believe that it is too wordy, but I love it.  I love the poetic style the writer uses and I feel that it really adds to the story.  I am trying to read a book that is currently a teen phenomenon, from the Twilight series and the writing is so unbelievably bad, it is hard for me to read.  Therefore, I really appreciate our hs books!

All 3 girls are moving along in their language arts and math.  I will really be updating the girls' writing on the blog.  I know I am way behind!

Great 2 weeks!

You Are a Mac
You are creative, stylish, and super trendy. You demand the best - even if it costs an arm and a leg.
You Are Austin
A little bit country, a little bit rock and roll. You're totally weird and very proud of it. Artistic and freaky, you still seem to fit in... in your own strange way. Famous Austin residents: Lance Armstrong, Sandra Bullock, Andy Roddick
You Belong in Paris
You enjoy all that life has to offer, and you can appreciate the fine tastes and sites of Paris. You're the perfect person to wander the streets of Paris aimlessly, enjoying architecture and a crepe.
What Your Pizza Reveals
Your appetite is pretty average. You don't go overboard - but you don't deprive yourself either. You aren't particularly picky about pizza. It's so good... how could you be? You fit in best in the Western part of the US. Your taste in food tends to favor what's rich and comforting. You prefer food that will definitely satisfy you. You are eclectic, stylish, and totally random with your choices. You are deep and thoughtful. You should consider traveling to Paris. The stereotype that best fits you is guy or girl next door. Hey, there's nothing wrong with being average.
