Amazed!!!

Week 14, Dec 1-5, 2008

Posted in General
We continued on this week as per usual.  We continued reading from 1 Samuel, covering chapters 10-13.  We are still taking a break from the Starting Strong Bible study.  The girls are continuing to work on their memory verses.  They are working on memorizing all of Psalm 19.

In history, we read mostly from the Landmark book this week.  We focused on the aftermath of the Civil War, whether our country should forgive the South or punish them.  We went further into learning about the "two nation" South--where newly freed Negroes and whites lived very separate lives.  Our readings took us through the harsh reality of racism and the formation of the KKK.  I was very worried about these readings, and prayed about them.  The girls, however, did well with them.  We had some very profound discussions about the evils of racism and how God created us all in His image and how Jesus died for all our sins, no matter what our skin color.  One of my biggest worries was that the girls would think that the KKK was very active now.  So we talked about how the KKK was once much more active and in some areas, their actions were condoned.  We talked about how our country has evolved and how our country has progressed to making laws that made racist acts illegal.  We discussed how initially, these laws were ignored in certain areas, but how, in time, most places in our country uphold these laws and those who commit illegal racist acts are punished.  We had talked about how the KKK is largely frowned upon and detested by most people.  We also focused on all of our friends and noted that they are of all colors and from many different cultures, and we were thankful that that sort of hatred is no longer really rampant in our country.  I did warn them that there may still be racist people around, but that there was no reason to think that someone is racist just based on appearance.  In fact, doing so would be discriminatory on our part.  Anyway--whew!  It was a week full of heavy discussion.  I think the girls enjoyed the talk and I am so glad I'm homeschooling.  I would not have wanted my kids to first learn about racism through personal experience!

For readings, K. read The Story of Thomas Alva Edison on her own, while I read it aloud to A.  Later in the week, K. read The Terrible Wave alone while I read that to A.  I read The Great Turkey Walk to K.  We enjoyed all 3 of these books, but our favorite hands down is The Great Turkey Walk.  What a wonderful book and what a great character that Simon is!

In science, we began a unit on the oceans--we read about some ocean mammals and about our coasts.

The girls otherwise progressed onwards in the 3 Rs.

Whew!  What a profound week we've had.

God bless,
A.H.

You Are a Mac
You are creative, stylish, and super trendy. You demand the best - even if it costs an arm and a leg.
You Are Austin
A little bit country, a little bit rock and roll. You're totally weird and very proud of it. Artistic and freaky, you still seem to fit in... in your own strange way. Famous Austin residents: Lance Armstrong, Sandra Bullock, Andy Roddick
You Belong in Paris
You enjoy all that life has to offer, and you can appreciate the fine tastes and sites of Paris. You're the perfect person to wander the streets of Paris aimlessly, enjoying architecture and a crepe.
What Your Pizza Reveals
Your appetite is pretty average. You don't go overboard - but you don't deprive yourself either. You aren't particularly picky about pizza. It's so good... how could you be? You fit in best in the Western part of the US. Your taste in food tends to favor what's rich and comforting. You prefer food that will definitely satisfy you. You are eclectic, stylish, and totally random with your choices. You are deep and thoughtful. You should consider traveling to Paris. The stereotype that best fits you is guy or girl next door. Hey, there's nothing wrong with being average.
