Week 15, Dec 8-12

Posted in General
We continued with our readings in 1 Sam this week.  We read about Saul as king, Jonathan, and Samuel anointing of David.  The girls began to work on memorizing Ps 19.

Our history readings were about the growth of American businesses post-Civil War.  We read about John Rockefeller, Alexander Graham Bell, and the building of the railroads.  We had a fantastic discussion about the men who built the railroads, based on our readings from American Adventures.  The railroad companies ended up having to hire Chinese men.  Initially, these bosses did not think highly of the Chinese--they looked different and ate different foods and acted differently.  But in the end, these bosses realized that even though the Chinese were smaller in size, they got as much or more accomplished as any crew before them.  We discussed prejudice in the workplace.  Was it right for the government to regulate who a company hires, in order to decrease the incidences of prejudice?  K. said that it was a hard question.  She said that on the one hand, the companies know who would be the best workers in their own companies.  However, at the same time, companies could continue to advocate prejudice by not giving anyone who was "different" a chance.  Wow.  I was really impressed by the maturity with which she discussed the topic.

We also discussed the large wave of immigration to the US at this time.  We talked about how ironic it was that the immigrants who had come 20-30 years before were now against new people emigrating to the US.  We talked about the contributions that immigrants have made to our country.

We continued our week of great literature by continuing with The Great Turkey Walk and The Terrible Wave.  A. is still reading Little House on Rocky Ridge

We had a math review week since we planned to take a break for the holidays after this week.

L. is reading too fast and too much.  She has already read The Boxcar Children twice and she told me with quite a bit of detail what happened in one of the chapters.  I initially thought she was just skimming it, reading just the words that she knew and ignoring the others.  Now I realize that she knows quite a bit of words and is really reading.  What to do?  The Boxcar Children isn't until Core K!

In science, we continued learning about insects, focusing on how some of them eat, and some of the tricks they have up their sleeves to camouflage themselves and to attack their prey.

A very full week, indeed!

God bless,
A.H.

You Are a Mac
You are creative, stylish, and super trendy. You demand the best - even if it costs an arm and a leg.
You Are Austin
A little bit country, a little bit rock and roll. You're totally weird and very proud of it. Artistic and freaky, you still seem to fit in... in your own strange way. Famous Austin residents: Lance Armstrong, Sandra Bullock, Andy Roddick
You Belong in Paris
You enjoy all that life has to offer, and you can appreciate the fine tastes and sites of Paris. You're the perfect person to wander the streets of Paris aimlessly, enjoying architecture and a crepe.
What Your Pizza Reveals
Your appetite is pretty average. You don't go overboard - but you don't deprive yourself either. You aren't particularly picky about pizza. It's so good... how could you be? You fit in best in the Western part of the US. Your taste in food tends to favor what's rich and comforting. You prefer food that will definitely satisfy you. You are eclectic, stylish, and totally random with your choices. You are deep and thoughtful. You should consider traveling to Paris. The stereotype that best fits you is guy or girl next door. Hey, there's nothing wrong with being average.
