Week 16, Dec 29-Jan 2

Posted in General
That's right!  We started back up this week.  We took a week off earlier than our city's school district so I figured we should start back a week earlier.  Plus, it's always nice to do school without having to run to too many classes!

We continued with our readings in 1 Sam, with the exciting and ever popular story of David and Goliath.  We continued reading about Saul's growing jealousy of David and his success, and with the friendship of David and Jonathan.

We also started Starting Strong again!  Yay!  We read about the life of Peter, and what it meant for him to give everything up and follow Christ.  I love Peter!  So impetuous, so passionate!  He makes me feel so much better about all my imperfections and misgivings.

The girls worked on Psalm 19 this week, and A. could recite most of it from memory and K. did a great job memorizing all of it!

In history, we read about the growing problems the Native Americans were having with the hordes of immigrants coming to America and invading their land.  We also read about reformers like Samuel Gompers and Fiorello La Guardia.  In order to discuss La Guardia and all of his accomplishments, we had to discuss what corruption in government was.  We also read about the growth of the newspaper industry and of the development of a reliable and cheap postal system.

K's reader and A's read aloud this week was Helen Keller.  I loved reading stories about Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan when I was a child, so this was a great trip down memory lane.  I didn't appreciate Helen Keller nearly as much as I did this time around though.  What an amazing woman!  It's hard enough to graduate cum laude from Radcliffe as a sighted and hearing person!

K. began The Great Wheel as her read aloud this week.  She and her daddy are doing this book, to give me a break.  I hear them laughing together as they read it, so I'm assuming the book is a winner.  A. continued with Little House on Rocky Ridge

We continued reading about insects this week.  We read about some of their homes, their feeding features and some other amazing things about their wings and legs.  We also read Listening to Crickets, which was a story about Rachel Carson.  She too, was an amazing woman!  What a great week for women this week!

Well, off I go to plan another great week.

Blessings,
A.H.

You Are a Mac
You are creative, stylish, and super trendy. You demand the best - even if it costs an arm and a leg.
You Are Austin
A little bit country, a little bit rock and roll. You're totally weird and very proud of it. Artistic and freaky, you still seem to fit in... in your own strange way. Famous Austin residents: Lance Armstrong, Sandra Bullock, Andy Roddick
You Belong in Paris
You enjoy all that life has to offer, and you can appreciate the fine tastes and sites of Paris. You're the perfect person to wander the streets of Paris aimlessly, enjoying architecture and a crepe.
What Your Pizza Reveals
Your appetite is pretty average. You don't go overboard - but you don't deprive yourself either. You aren't particularly picky about pizza. It's so good... how could you be? You fit in best in the Western part of the US. Your taste in food tends to favor what's rich and comforting. You prefer food that will definitely satisfy you. You are eclectic, stylish, and totally random with your choices. You are deep and thoughtful. You should consider traveling to Paris. The stereotype that best fits you is guy or girl next door. Hey, there's nothing wrong with being average.
