Writer's Circle, first week Jan 9, 2009
We had our first Writer's Circle today and it went really well!
A. went first. Her assignment this week was to think about some of the things that the characters in her book, Little House on Rocky Ridge, did. She was to write about how she might have done something differently and why. She was to write it in the form of a letter. Here is her letter:
Dear Mommy,
Since I am older than Rose I might probably will do things different than her. Like when Paul showed her the dog he made with his fingers she laughed. I would not. Besides, I don't think it's funny. Most of the funny things Rose thinks that are funny I think are not. And when Rose ate the piece of candy Papa bought I know my parents you and daddy would say after dinner darling.
Here is my piece:
Dear Kaede and Anja,
I am writing to tell you about how I feel about Meghan’s behavior in The Terrible Wave. When Meghan’s father comes home from work, he has news that the levees that usually keep the waters from flooding their town may have broken. He immediately begins to issue orders so that the entire family could evacuate the house and go to dryer land on the hill. Meghan was supposed to have gone after him up the hill. However, at the last minute, she decides to disobey her father and go up to the attic with her hoity-toity aunt, who had refused to get into the rain water.
While Meghan does eventually end up safe, she ended up separated from her father and sisters, who had gone up the hill. Furthermore, when her father saw that she was not following him up the hill like he had told her to, he risked his life to go back and get her. He did end up surviving but again, I feel that she put her father in an unnecessarily difficult position by not obeying him.
I realize that in moments of panic, we often make rash decisions that we later regret. I also realize that I might have made a rash decision like Meghan did had I been in her shoes. The wave was coming and everything was chaotic. I also realize that it is easy for me to say this because I have twenty twenty hindsight. However, I still believe that Meghan should have done as her father had told her—she should have followed him up the hill as fast as she could go. She would not have been separated from her father and she could have spared herself and her family some grief in those days that followed the terrible wave.
Sincerely,
Your Mommy
K's assignment for the past few weeks was to write about an invention that she created. This week, she was to write an advertisement for her invention. The invention was to have a name and we learned a few advertising techniques, which she was to have utilized in her ad.
The Dazzlelight is a new way to get light. Install it in your light bulbs and see the difference. The Dazzlelight is a box with a light bulb in the middle. Instead of wasting the light that it produces it bounces off a mirror and onto another. And so on. It contiinues bouncing until there isn't any more space. This saves you from having to buy any more light bulbs. It also helps the earth by saving energy. So use Dazzlelight! Also, the outside of your Dazzlelight can have any of our prints with no extra charges. Here are some of our options. Also, there is a 2 year warranty. And if you're not satisfied, we'll give you your money back. Remember--Dazzlelight has all the might!
Kaede used the following techniques: hyperbole, name repetition, and rhyme.
And here is mine--I had not done any of the other weeks' assignments wrt invention so I had to come up with my own invention and then advertise it:
Are you tired of eating fast food on road trips? Want to save money and eat your own freshly prepared foods? Love hot meals on the road but have no way to heat them up?
Well look no more! The Miracle Mini solar oven is here to solve all your problems!
The Miracle Mini solar oven is made from special solar cell packs that store enough solar energy for 10 days! That’s hundreds of hot meals heated in your own car! Typical solar ovens are huge! And won’t fit in your standard car. The Miracle Mini solar oven is the size of a large shoe box and can heat up normal plastic containers in minutes! Easy to operate with the touch of a button, the Miracle Mini solar oven needs only to be charged by sitting in direct sunlight for 2 hours! After that, enjoy 10 days worth of hot meals, heated from the convenience of your own car! No more having to look for restaurants that charge you too much money and serve you greasy unhealthy food! Take your own food and heat it up with the Miracle Mini solar oven!
I told K to identify the advertising techniques I used and she said: name repetition and hyperbole.
We all enjoyed this and look forward to it next week.
Blessings,
A.H. |
