Writer's Circle, Jan 23, 2009
Our Writer's Circle was a bit short today and will be short for 4 weeks. Why? K.'s assignment for the next 4 weeks will be to write a research paper on a state. We are supposed to do the paper on our own state but since we'll be covering our state's history in a unit study sometime, I decided to just allow us to pick a state. K chose Connecticut and I chose Alaska. This week we were just beginning our research.
For A's assignment, she was given 3 different titles. She was to choose a title and write either a fictional or factual piece based on the title. The title she used was "The day I met _____" Here is her piece:
A Fun Day at the Park
One day at the park I met a girl named Charnita. She was eight years old just like me. We played and played. I taught Charnita how to tie her sneakers. We were very happy. I also taught her how to do a kartwheel. We were very different.
A.'s piece was fictional.
Here is mine (untitled):
I was 19 years old and a student at the University of Texas at Austin. I was trying to get into medical school, which meant that I took a lot of science classes. One day, I had entered my zoology class, looking for a seat. I was used to sitting in the front, where I could better pay attention and focus, but the last few weeks, I had started sitting in the back, and I enjoyed the free air circulation and less stressed feeling that I got back there. So I wasn’t exactly sure where to sit.
In the last few rows in the back, there sat a colored boy with short hair and a white long sleeved shirt. He had his head down on his desk. For some reason, I felt drawn to this boy. So I went over to the desk next to him and sat down. I must have made quite a lot of noise because he woke up and looked at me sleepily.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” I said to him. He smiled lightly and said, “It’s okay.” He proceeded to put his head back down and go to sleep. When class started, he sat up and began to take notes and pay attention, as did I, so we did not speak further. However, in the middle of class, the professor said we could have a 5 minute break, and so I turned to him and began speaking to him. He told me that his name was Francois, that he was from Jamaica, that he was a Biology major, and that he was a senior but would be graduating in December instead of May. I consequently told him that my name was Anh, that I was a Plan II major, but was planning to go to medical school.
We started comparing our course schedules and realized that we had many classes together, including the chemistry lab. This was very unusual, even when students try to plan their classes. We kept seeing each other around campus, in the library, and of course in class. We always sat next to each other and eventually became very good friends. In fact, we became such good friends that we decided we just had to get married. Eighteen years later—nearly thirteen of those as a married couple—he is still my best friend.
Mine is not fictional.
K. began her research. Here is what she has so far:
State Name: Connecticut
Motto: He who transplanted still sustains
Nickname: Constitution State
Flower: Mountain Laurel
Capitol: Hartford
Date Admitted to the Union: Jan 9, 1788 (5th)
Population: 3,909,549
Largest City: Bridgeport
Governor: Ms. Jodi Rell
Bird: Robin
Tree: White Oak
Animal: sperm whale
Insect: Praying mantis
Mineral: garnet
K. says she chose CT because she collects state quarters and thought the one for CT was really pretty and interesting.
I chose AK because I worked there for a brief time and think it is such a cool state!
Here is mine:
State Name Alaska
State Motto North to the future
State Nickname The Last Frontier
State Flower Forget Me Not
State Capitol Juneau
Date admitted to US Jan 3, 1959 (49th)
State population 686, 293
Largest City Anchorage
Governor Sarah Pailin
K and I will probably not have much for WC for the next week. WC will feature mainly A's work!
God bless,
A.H.
