Amazed!!!
Feb. 9, 2009
Writers' Circle, 2/8/09
We had some fun assignments this week.
A.'s assignment was to write a journal entry for her "travel journal". Again, it could be fictitious or factual. Of course, she chose to write a fictitious piece. Here is her piece:
In Walwdodia there are cute little monkeys, clever small deer, black and white zebras, brown black white gray horses and friendly orange and yellow and black and white cheetas. You can eat berries bananas and watermelon and you can live in the woods or build a home for yourself. You travel by biking or hiking. The activities you can do is ride the cheetas or horses. The men and boys wear cotton shirts and deerskin pants and women and girls wear cotton skirts and dyed blue purple and pink cotton shirts. The dangers are that anamals can attack you.
I also wrote a fictitious piece:
On April 13, 2157, my family and I went to visit the moon. We were there for 2 whole weeks! We had never visited the moon before, so this was a big treat.
We got the idea to go to the moon from our neighbors. They had spent a week on the moon and loved it. They did say that it was a bit rocky and cold, but that everything else was wonderful.
We took a long time to pack for our trip—we had done a lot of research and found out that we could go swimming and skiing there, so we packed for two vacations, really. We packed warm things for skiing and cold things for swimming.
We went to the moon on one of the new rocket cruisers. I know my ancestors would not be able to believe this! They could only stay on the earth when they traveled and they had to use airplanes. The trip on the rocket cruiser was really nice. We had very nice soft cushioned seats, plus we all got our own private screens so we could watch movies or listen to music. The trip took only 9 hours and we slept some of the way. We got to eat dehydrated space food, which wasn’t great but kept us from getting too hungry. We had to drink a lot of water!
When we got to the moon, we took a moon glider to our hotel. We flew into Moonopolis, which is the largest and most bustling city on the moon. A moon glider is basically the moon’s version of a taxi. Moonopolis is a great space city. It has a large dome, which protects it from asteroids and really strong winds and any other things that fly around the moon. The dome still allows us to enjoy the sun and see the earth as well.
Our hotel was named Moon City Harvest Hotel and it was marvelous! We had a very nice room with large waterbeds and heated cork floors. The ceiling was open so we could see the stars and earth while we fell asleep.
The first week we went skiing down the newest ski slope, called Moon Run Heaven. This ski resort was really nice—the mountains weren’t as high as the ones on earth, but the snow was real and we could land in a large pile of snow. We also went skating on the ice at the ice center. We built large ice sculptures using the sculpture machine.
The second week, we went to the simulated moon beach. This beach isn’t as sandy as the ones on earth, but they managed to import some of white sand from the earth. The best part of the beach was the sauna right on the beach and the heated water area. The other great thing was being able to see the earth and stars the whole time while swimming.
We ate some food that was specific to the moon. There aren’t really any animals that are native to the moon, but there are some plants and fruits that scientists have been able to plant on the moon. We tried a type of cabbage called moonage, and a new type of fruit called Moon-ple, which was similar to an apple. Otherwise, we ate food that was imported from the earth to the moon.
Overall, we had a fantastic time. We loved the unique experience of being on the moon and really enjoyed being able to see the earth from afar. We missed seeing a few great moon buildings because we were too far away from the moon city of Moon River City, but that is our destination next year, when we go back to the moon for a vacation.
K. continued to work on her Connecticut research paper. She has formulated her outline based on her thesis statement. Here is what she has so far:
Introduction--includes history and general information
Thesis statement--Connecticut is a fun place to live
I. Outdoor activities--including weather
II. Entertainment--ballet, arts
III. Historical landmarks
She's been working very hard with her note cards and her library books!
I have been working hard to encourage K. not to pick up my bad habits. I still haven't worked on my Alaska paper much. But here is what I have:
Thesis statement: Alaska is very diverse in its geography, wildlife and people.
I. Geography--different land areas, forests, tundra, etc.
II. Wildlife--moose, reindeer, bald eagle, etc.
III. People--different Inuit tribes
Next week, we have the whole research paper to do!!!
Best wishes,
A.H. |
