A Moore Formula Family

GRRRRR!!!!!!!

Why can't I stop worrying about unsupportive family's opinions of homeschooling!!! Here it is, the end of the year and again I am dealing with the usual questions... "Are you going to have the kids tested to see where they are in comparison to their public school friends and family? Even if they are not required to be tested, I think it's a good idea for all of them to be tested, don't you? Such and such is the same age as your kid and they are in the fourth grade not the third grade" Then there are the unstated, implied looks and all the familiar sounds and facial expressions when discussing this year's homeschool activities. No matter how good I may start out feeling about our decision to homeschool and the way I homeschool, by the end of these discussions I always feel sick at heart and sick to my stomach!!! The only way to gain approval would be to stick to one particular curriculum, read every single book and do every single worksheet from that curriculum, and the kids to test above average on everything!!!! I hate testing and I don't like to give actual grades. I like the kids to work on something til they get it and then we will move on, if that means we spend 5 years in pre-algebra or 6 years just learning nouns and pronouns, then so be it!!!! Why does everything have to be a competition????? And why must I always live in guilt???

Portfolios

Well, today we have the AC guys here working on our house all day, sooooo it was the perfect time to get my yearly summaries ready. This is the first time we have ever had to worry with portfolios, evaluations, and testing.  I was definitely not looking forward to this time of year back in September. After dealing with unsupportive friends and family members in the past, I always question and second guess myself when it comes to homeschooling. You know the kind of friends and family members we all have that think your children are at a disadvantage because they aren't learning the right stuff- the stuff they would learn at a "regular" school!!! You know, like how to have safe sex, where they hold the best parties, how we should give into to peer pressure, and where to hide when the bullies are chasing you!!!! Stuff like that.

Anyway, back on point. So I was going through the year and summarizing what we have done and guess what?  I realized we really have done a lot throughout the year  I'm even looking forward to our next school year. Using the Moore Formula is such a wonderful way to homeschool. It sure does make for less burn out and who's not for that (Keep It Simple Sweetie!)

Civil War

Currently, we are studying the Civil War. We are using a variety of materials: books, videos, websites, worksheets. It's amazing how much I never learned in school- private or public. I am learning as much as my children are (maybe more). I grew up in the South, but have recently relocated to the North. I have handled the move pretty well, but our current study has at times made me very homesick :-( I love Charleston and The Battery. I miss the ocean and the beautiful beaches. I am so thankful to have had the privilege of growing up in such a beautiful area, with the mountains on one side and the beach on the other.
