You Know You're a Homeschool Mother When . . .

Posted in Science

Other women are getting flowers, but your husband brings home this:

Yes, it IS a black widow. (I haven't figured out how to take a pictures of  small things without making them blurry.) This spider has been sitting on top of our piano in a pickle jar for two weeks without food, water, or air.

Tonight we found some garden spiders had built a web over the back door, so we fed them to her. Wow! She was fast! We thought they might put up a fight, but she didn't give them a chance. Now they are all loosely wrapped and hanging in a group from her "web."  I really hate to call it a web, because it is so messy. But I suppose that's what she thinks it is.

When my husband came home, he wasn't very happy we had fed it. Apparently he wanted this thing to die. I figure if she could live for two weeks without air, we might as well feed her. He says he's going to smash her tomorrow, for the sake of safety. Now where's the fun in that?

I wonder what he'll bring home next?

November 16, 2007 - You too?!

My husband brought us the very same thing a few months ago (blogged about it back in July) . He is NOT into nature, but couldn't resist bringing this to me LOL! After this creature was still on our shelf after two weeks, he finally released it to the underground water system . . . shhh . . .the kids still do not know! We could never get ours to eat though - that is so cool Melissa!

You know, I'd suggest that next time he wants to bring you a little red & black hour-glass shaped thing...it better be a dress. :-) LOL Actually, since it's behind glass, we probably would have fed it and watched it too. How cool...so, did he ever smash it?

Nope. He forgot all about it. Would you believe she is STILL alive? We even threw a wasp in there with her. I think they both realized they had met their match because they stayed on opposite sides of the jar until the wasp sufficated. Black widows must be able to live on very little air.

I'm actually thankful it wasn't a dress as my figure is nowhere near an hour glass shape. More like her rear end. LOL!

Any ideas what I should do with the spider? My kids suggested I pour boiling water on her. (I'm afraid they aren't quite as tender hearted as Debra's kids. I guess they have spent too much time butchering cows, pigs, and chickens.) I'm afraid to flush it- she'd probably climb back out- but it really isn't the safest thing to have in a house full of kids.

December 4, 2007 - Definitely Squish It

I know what you mean about looking more like the Black Widow's "back side" LOL Oh the days when I could fit into a size 6...It's been so long that I can barely remember them.

I'd definitely go for the squishing option...My son was bit on his heel by a widow a few years ago and he couldn't wear normal shoes for almost 6 months...flip-flops was it...and that was in the fall, so his piggies got a little chilled. Good thing we live in FL. :-)

No idea if they can survive in water, but I don't really have a soft spot for scary-looking, poisonous arachnids...the less of them, the better I sleep at night. :-) LOL Maybe you can make it like the "Whack-A-Mole" game. Give everyone a shoe then release the spider. Whoever gets it first "wins."

I am speechless! I mean I love nature study, but I think black widows are beyond my limit! I saw in a later post that she died. All I can say is whew!
