My scary journey into homeschooling

May. 29, 2006 - Inspiration

Yesterday, I was at my dad's house with the kids and he said something to me that really made me feel great.  He said that a lot of people would be too scaried to homeschool their kids and that I am doing a great thing by homeschooling SaraKate.

He then gave me my birthday card and in it her wrote, "Your doing a lot of good things that will have a great impact on the lives of others, keep it up."

That really made me feel so good about my decision to homeschool.  Out of everyone I have told about my homeschooling experience I thought my dad would give me the hardest time with my decision and to know that he is cheering me on made it all the better for me.

May. 23, 2006 - FCAT scores for Ty

Tyler did great on his FCAT testing this year.  He scored a 1953 in Reading, grade level is 1622.  In Math he scored a 1850, grade level is 1692.  He thought he had done bad in reading but he in fact scored higher this year than any other year.

I also noticed that he scored just a little higher than SaraKate when he was in 3rd grade and that has given SaraKate some great hope that in a few year's she will be able to have really high test's scores too.

She read two chapter's of Junie B. Jones today and enjoyed it.

May. 22, 2006 - Amazing Monday

May 22, 2006

Well, today SaraKate finished reading Junie B. Jones I have a Peep in my Pocket.  After she finished reading me the book she told me that she likes to read books.  I am so amazed and thrilled.  SaraKate has never liked to read because she found it such a stuggle and to hear her tell me that she likes to read is such a huge answer to my prayers.

I want all three of my kids to have a love of reading and to hear the one who hates to read the most telling me she likes reading is a huge milestone.  I hope that she continues to like to read and continues to want me to read to her and to listen to her read.

May. 19, 2006 - Last day of school

May 19, 2006

Well, I homeschooled for almost 2 months.  I have been frustrated some days and so proud other days.  SaraKate has learned much more than I thought.  She has learned half of her mulitiplacation tables, and half of her states.  She is starting to like to read more.  Now that is a huge step toward the love of learning that I am hoping to get with my children.

I feel like she has learned more in two months working with me full-time than she had for 7 months in public school.  It totally makes me secure in my decision to homeschool her.

May. 18, 2006 - Boring Day

May 18, 2006

We didn't do much today.  We went to the library to get some new books, and to Target, and health food store.

SaraKate read a chapter of  a Junie B. Jones book, we went over some spelling words in the car, and she will do her lesson of language arts on SOS in a few minutes.  She is so ready for the school year to be over and so am I.

I plan to keep her reading every day this summer and to also have my oldest reading every day too and both kids doing educational games online.

May. 16, 2006 - Tuesday rainy day

Today SaraKate read to me a chapter out of Junie B. Jones and we did a page of math.  We are going to read another chapter later today and work on SOS language arts.  It has been a rainy day her and glummy.  We got a new turtle today and named him Tiny, he is a red slider.

May. 15, 2006 - Testing

May 15, 2006

Well today is the last day for testing for SaraKate.  We are trying to figure out if she has a learning disablility and if so what kind.

I have decided to use Saxton Math for next year for her and to do TON"S of reading at her reading level.  I am feeling much more assurd of what I am doing today, but that changes daily.

Wish me luck!!

May. 12, 2006 - Stressed out!!!

I started homeschooling SaraKate 6 weeks ago and some days are great and magical and other day's, I think why the heck did I do this.

I got her FCAT test scores today in the mail and she is a little below grade level in Math and way below in Reading.  I feel like a failure as a mother.  I have worked with her in the evenings, I paid a tutor for her and I sent her to after school tutoring for the past 2 years for Reading and she still is way below.

I keep telling myself that is why I took her out of school so that I can spend more time teaching her and I can only hope that this is going to make her a better reader.  But some days it is hard since I am chasing a 2 year old around and trying to keep my house clean too.
