Thinking about farm life...

Over the past year I have realized how much I want to live a more simple life.  I have lived in or close to NYC all my life. I am slowly getting further away.  Generally, people around here have way more than they need.  If they don't, they are doing everything in their power to get as much as they can. The teenagers at the local high school drive BMW's and Hummers.  They have cell phone and $300 handbags.
I hope our next move will bring us way out to the country, surrounded by the beauty of God's creation - not man's.  We would love to live on a little farm with horses, sheep and maybe a few alpacas.  Alpacas communicate by humming and it is so cute to be around!  It is like a baby  cooing!  Horses are a passion for us around here. I just learned how to canter.  It is the most fun I have had in ages!  To be on the back of this huge, graceful, beautiful animal, running in the sun is the most wonderful experience!  I wish I could do this everyday.  As always, God did a superb job in creating these loving creatures.
I am a knitter as well, and the alpaca and sheeps' wool  would be put to good use!  I have tried a little bit of spinning, but have certainly not mastered it.  It to, like knitting and riding horses, is a calming, peaceful practice for me.
I don't know where God will lead us.  For now, we spend many days at the farm where we are learning to ride.  We visit the sheep at our favorite farm market.  We enjoy the ride from the back of a cantering horse!

We are Atlanta natives and finally left that life in 12/2003 to live on our little dirt road! I knew when my youngest son was born in 1993 that we didn't belong in the city. I agree about those who can't get enough of the STUFF - when will they ever figure out that the stuff won't make them happy!

Don't give up on your dream. Give it to the Lord and He will take you there ~
Blessings,

We have been contemplating a move to a more rural area. We recently moved from an urban, inner-ring suburb to a more suburban suburb (if that makes sense). Acreage and living closer to earth just sounds right.

One of my dreams is to live on a small Hobby Farm. Although, growing herbs or raising Alpacas or sheep or goats for market would be awesome too. We're in Arkansas, in a medium-to-small sized city, but a few miles away is the most beautiful land you could imagine. I am praying to find a nice piece of land, I'm even open to living in a mobile home or modular home (have you SEEN the new ones? wow)! ;) Anyway, great post!
God bless and keep praying for your little farm,
Gini

I'm sure i'm romanticizing the reality of it all, but it does seem so dreamy to me!

Hello, I am asking a few of the homesteader types like you on this site the same question; here it is:

Are you interested in helping to write an enewsletter (in a volunteer capacity) for our new homesteading enewsletter? We are looking to find a group of five or so "leaders" who could take on the putting together of a monthly ezine sponsored and delivered by TOS. From that, we are planning to create a new blog community separate from this one, for homesteaders. This would encourage people from all over the world to begin blogs on how they homestead. Doing things like canning, gardening, alternative power and health, homeschooling, bread and tortilla making, living off the land. I believe that the way blogging is going, that just as political blogs and Christian blogs have risen up with major names attached to them, that there will be some known names that come out of a homestead blog. We want to help people establish themselves as an expert in what they do. Ultimately, to glorify Christ. What do you think about something like this, and would you consider being on the team to do the enewsletter to kick it all off? Eventually this may turn into a print magazine as well. The Christian Homesteader, or something similar to that. Please email Jenig@TheHomeschoolMagazine.com with your ideas; we hope you'll consider sharing your expertise.

Dec. 23, 2006 - Alpacas

We left city life and a snooty neighborhood for a small alpaca farm this past year. We are the Perfect Peace Alpaca Ranch of Blue Ridge, Virginia. It truly is the PERFECT PEACE we were looking for! Originally from Long Island, NY, we have made many quality of life changes in the past 5 years. Moving south, homeschooling and now farm life. God has blessed us richly for each lifestyle change.
