Jun. 20, 2008 - Bag Lady

I have been on a bag making spree the last couple of days.  I found this great pattern called "Paper or Plastic" and I love it!  The "paper" bags are big, sturdy and can hold lots of stuff.   The "plastic" bags are lightweight and roll up for easy storage and carrying with you!

The green bag is lined with the same fabric as the three smaller bags.  It is actually an old sheet that was my grandmothers.  Whenever we would visit them, those are the sheets that she would put on my bed.  For some reason, that is one of the things I most associate with my grandmother.  My Grandma B. passed away while I was still in high school, and now I can have a reminder of her every time I shop!

I also made Hannah a set of bags using a blue starfish print.  She already has the big one packed up for the pool.  The last "paper" bag I made was just some leftover fabrics from my stash.  I love the tan bag with the bright red interior, it is a happy bag!

I will have to put away the sewing machines for a while and concentrate on the house, but at least I can go shopping without bringing home a dozen plastic bags that I don't know what to do with them!

Jun. 17, 2008 - Peach Pie

Today I finally got around to baking some bread, the kids are very happy.  I figured while I had the wheat grinder out and the stove on I would also whip up an applesauce cake and some peach pie--my favorite!  It is all done and now I am just waiting for it to chill some before I can cut it.  I keep thinking I should make some ice cream to go with it, but I haven't mustered up the energy just yet.

Nothing else exciting going on around here, just working on the house and laundry and all that "homey" kinda stuff.

Jun. 16, 2008 - timezones, navigation and the DMV

I am finally feeling like we are making progress on settling in.  There are only a few boxes left to unpack and they are mostly the kids stuff.  I feel like one of those cartoon characters that opens a closet door and everything comes rushing out on top of them, and now amount of pushing and shoving will get the door to close.  The only way stuff is going to fit comes down to two choices: 1: get rid of MORE stuff or 2: learn to live with stuff piled higher than I would like.  I guess I will just have to see how it goes.

One of the biggest adjustments to moving from one side of the time zone to the other is the daylight hours.  It is light here at 5 am, not just starting to get light, but wake you up if the curtains are open light.   And it is DARK out at 9 pm.  Some mornings I wake up with the sun and can't go back to sleep, but am ready to crawl in bed by 8:30.  It is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is hard when the kids want to be outside playing and I want them in so I can vegetate.  It is so weird for us, when we are used to it being light out till almost 10 pm or later in Michigan.  I guess the good news is that if we go to the drive-in it will start much earlier.

We bought ourselves a navigation unit before we moved out here and we find ourselves following it blindly--not always a good plan.  Tonight we went to a store a couple of towns over and we got there relatively easily, but on the way home we noticed that things just did not seem right.   It had us take a turn on this winding little road (in the dark and rain) that had all the makings of a spooky movie.  We are all saying "this doesn't seem right"  but yet we follow blindly the little voice telling us this is the way to go.  Needless to say, we ended up having to turn around when we discovered the dead end, and make our way back to a less creepy road and wait for the navigation unit to tell us how to get home from there.  Technology is a great thing, but we definately cannot place all our blind trust in it!

The big accomplishment for the day was surviving the DMV to get our drivers licenses.  We tried right after we moved to get our licenses switched, but after waiting in line for an hour and a half we were informed that we could not get a NH drivers license without our marriage license!  Now, I haven't exactly used my marriage license in a while, so I had to do some digging through our files to find it.  Then I was going to go while Dan was back in MI taking car of the house, but discovered it had gotten mixed in with some other paperwork and ended up in Michigan without me.  So, today we decided to finally brave the DMV and finally get our NH drivers license.  Apparently, the first of June the had some new laws take effect and they are still working out the kinks in the system.  We waited in line for 1 hour and 40 min.  just to have someone look over our paperwork and enter our names in the computer, then we waited another 1 hour and 35 min. until we had our paperwork looked at again, copied and our photo taken.  We were in the DMV for over 3 hours.  We really felt sorry for the kids trying to get their drivers license.  One girl we talked to started out at 8 am and it was 2:30 before she left with license in hand.   We did meet some nice people in line, but when you stand (and I do mean stand, there are only about 10 chairs in the building and 50-75 people at any given time) next to each other for so long, you can't help but visit to keep from losing your mind.  It was joked that we were all jealous of the toddler that at least got animal crackers and juice while waiting in line.  That was a brave mom!  She had a little one (2-3 yrs old) with her, she was several months pregnant and she had to wait in line half the day to renew her license.  At one point she had to run out and pick her older daughter up from school.  Everyone in line was great and she went right back into line where she was.   Her kids were so well behaved and everyone commented to her.  I hope that we made her day a little brighter! (I am not sure my teenagers would have been as well behaved!)

Thank goodness we don't have to renew our drivers license for 5 years!

Jun. 9, 2008 - The Pink Couch

Yep, I did it, I bought a pink couch!  I know, everyone's reaction is: "what????"  But I couldn't help it, it was love at first sight.

I have always loved the look of old English cottages and the cottage style.   So, when we were shopping for a new sofa and we just happened to stumble on the fact that the couch that would not only fit in our space, but give us adequate seating and a pull-out bed also came in a nice washable pink slipcover, how could I say no???

Besides,  you have to admit, it does look good with the all white table, chairs and buffet/hutch that we bought. A note on the hutch, we actually had an old brown buffet that we were planning on keeping, but I stumbled on this on in a "Big Lots" type store called "Building 19", it was damaged (a small piece of trim of from the side and some paint chips that I actually think add to it's charm) and the glass had tons of old masking tape stuck to it.  I spent a couple of hours scrapping the tape off from the glass and a few minutes gluing the broken trim back on, but I think it was worth it.  The original price on this piece was over $1500, and I picked it up for $200.  A definate splurge, but it holds much more than the piece I already had and I love the way it looks.

Hope you enjoy a small glimpse of my new home, I will be posting more pictures if I ever get the rooms acceptable!
